How to Change Your Screen Icon and Text Size

Understanding Display Settings on Your Device

Your device's display settings control how text and icons appear on your screen. These settings are built into most operating systems and let you change the size of content without installing anything new. Whether you use a Windows computer, Mac, smartphone, or tablet, you have options to adjust what you see on your screen. The size of text and icons affects how easy it is to read your screen and how many items fit in the space available.

Screen scaling works by enlarging pixels, which are the tiny dots that make up images and text on your screen. When you increase the scale, each pixel becomes larger, making everything bigger. This is different from zooming in on a specific webpage or document—screen scaling changes the size across your entire device. Most devices offer scaling in percentages, typically ranging from 100 percent (normal size) to 200 percent or higher on some systems.

The physical size of your screen does not change when you adjust these settings. A 24-inch monitor stays 24 inches, but the content displayed on it appears larger or smaller. This is useful for people with vision concerns, those working on smaller screens, or anyone who prefers larger text for comfort. Your device remembers these settings after you change them, so you do not have to adjust them each time you restart.

Different applications may respond differently to your scaling settings. Some programs built for older systems may not resize properly, while modern applications typically adjust automatically. Understanding where these settings live on your device is the first step toward customizing your viewing experience.

Practical Takeaway: Before making changes, check what operating system you use. Open Settings on your device and look for "Display" or "Screen" options. Taking a screenshot of the current settings can help you remember the original configuration if you want to change things back later.

Changing Text and Icon Size on Windows Computers

Windows computers offer multiple ways to change text and icon sizes. The most direct method uses the Settings app, which provides system-wide adjustments. To access this on Windows 10 or Windows 11, click the Start button, type "Settings" into the search box, and open the Settings app. From there, select "System" and then "Display." You will see a section labeled "Scale and layout" which shows your current scaling percentage.

Windows typically offers preset scaling options: 100 percent (default), 125 percent, 150 percent, and 175 percent. You can click on any of these options to apply it immediately to your entire screen. Some users prefer 125 percent as a middle ground that makes text noticeably larger without creating excessive spacing. If none of the preset options suit your needs, Windows allows custom scaling. Look for a "Custom scaling" option or advanced display settings to enter a specific percentage between 100 and 500 percent.

Another method involves changing only the text size without affecting icons and other elements. In the same Display settings window, scroll down to find "Related settings" and select "Advanced display settings." This shows your monitor's resolution and other technical details. Some Windows versions have a "Make text bigger" slider that adjusts font size independently. You can also adjust text size within specific applications—for example, many programs have their own font size controls in menus.

To change individual icon sizes on your desktop, right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select "View." This opens a menu with options for icon size: Small, Medium, or Large. You can also hold the Ctrl key and scroll your mouse wheel to resize icons quickly. This method works for files and folders on your desktop and in Windows Explorer windows.

After making changes, you may need to sign out and sign back in for some applications to recognize the new scaling. Most modern Windows programs apply changes immediately, but some older software may require a restart. Test your changes by opening several programs you use regularly to confirm they display properly.

Practical Takeaway: Start with the 125 percent or 150 percent preset options rather than custom values. These have been tested with most Windows programs. If text appears blurry after scaling, this may indicate the program does not support high-DPI scaling. You can usually fix this by right-clicking the program icon, selecting Properties, clicking the Compatibility tab, and checking "Disable fullscreen optimizations."

Adjusting Display Size on Mac Computers

Mac computers handle scaling differently than Windows machines. Instead of a percentage-based system, Macs use "Looks like" settings that simulate different screen resolutions. To access these options, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, select "System Settings" or "System Preferences" (depending on your macOS version), and choose "Displays." You will see options for screen resolution with labels like "Larger Text" or "More Space."

The "Larger Text" option is the equivalent of zooming in—it makes everything on your screen bigger, including icons, menus, and text. The "More Space" option does the opposite, fitting more content on your screen but making it smaller. Most Mac users find that the default setting works well, but adjusting it is straightforward. Simply click the radio button next to your preferred option, and the change takes effect immediately without requiring a restart.

For more precise control, some Macs allow you to hold the Option key while dragging the scaling slider. This gives you intermediate values between the preset options. Older Mac models and external displays may have different scaling controls, so check your specific model's documentation if you do not see these options.

To change the size of text in specific applications, many Mac programs have their own text size controls. In Safari, for example, you can hold Cmd and press the plus key to make text larger. The same shortcut works in many other Mac applications. You can also change the system font size for menus and buttons by going to System Settings, selecting "Accessibility," and choosing "Display." This section has a "Text size" slider that affects system-wide text in menus and dialogs, separate from your main display scaling.

Third-party utilities also exist for Mac users who want more control over scaling. However, the built-in Mac display settings handle most situations effectively. After adjusting your display settings, open a few programs to confirm that text and icons appear as you prefer.

Practical Takeaway: Start with the standard Larger Text option if you want bigger display elements. This option works reliably with all Mac applications. If you find that some applications are harder to read, use their individual text size controls rather than changing your system display settings, as this gives you more precise control over specific programs.

Changing Text and Icon Size on iPhones and iPads

iPhones and iPads offer several methods to increase text and icon sizes. The most basic option is to go to Settings, tap "Display & Brightness," and select "Text Size." A slider at the bottom of the screen lets you adjust the size of text throughout your device. Moving the slider to the right makes text larger; moving it left makes text smaller. This setting affects text in Messages, Mail, Notes, and many other built-in apps, though third-party applications may not respond to this setting.

For more dramatic changes, iPhones and iPads have an "Accessibility" menu with additional scaling options. Go to Settings, tap "Accessibility," and select "Display & Text Size." Here you will find "Larger Accessibility Sizes," which offers much bigger text sizes than the standard Text Size slider. This setting ranges from the default size all the way up to 188-point text, which is significantly larger. Enabling this option shows the available sizes as large numbers that you can tap to preview.

Icon size on iPhones and iPads cannot be changed system-wide like on computers. However, you can organize your home screen to make frequently used apps more visible. Placing important apps in the dock at the bottom of the screen keeps them easily accessible. You can also use the "Reduce Transparency" and "Increase Contrast" options in the Accessibility menu to make icons and text stand out more clearly on your screen.

Some iOS apps have their own text size controls within the app itself. When reading in Apple Books, for example, you can tap the font size icon to make text larger. When reading in Safari, use the two-finger pinch gesture to zoom in on web pages. These app-specific controls work in addition to your system-wide text size settings.

The "Bold Text" option in Settings can also make your interface easier to read. Go to Settings, tap "Accessibility," select "Display & Text Size," and turn on "Bold Text." This makes all system text
