How to Change Your Password on a Tablet

Understanding Your Tablet's Operating System

Before you change your password, it's useful to understand what type of tablet you own. The two most common tablet operating systems are Apple's iPadOS (used on iPads) and Google's Android (used on tablets from Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo, and other manufacturers). These systems handle passwords differently, and the steps to change your password vary depending on which one you have.

Your tablet's operating system is the software that runs all your apps and manages how your device works. iPadOS is exclusively on Apple devices, while Android is open-source software that many manufacturers use. Knowing which system your tablet runs will help you follow the correct instructions for changing your password.

You can find your tablet's operating system by looking in the settings menu. On an iPad, go to Settings and look for "About" — you'll see the iPadOS version listed there. On Android tablets, open Settings, scroll to the bottom, and look for "About tablet" or "Device information" — the Android version appears there. Some tablets also show this information on the device's original box or in the documentation that came with it.

There are actually several passwords associated with your tablet. Your device password (also called a PIN or passcode) unlocks your physical tablet. Your account password protects your online accounts, like your Apple ID or Google account. You may also have passwords for Wi-Fi networks, email accounts, or apps. This guide covers changing your device password and your main account password, as these are the most important ones to protect your tablet and personal information.

Takeaway: Identify whether you own an iPad or an Android tablet and locate your settings menu. This will make the password-changing process straightforward when you're ready to proceed.

Changing Your Device Password on an iPad

Your iPad's device password (called a passcode) is what you enter to unlock your tablet each time you pick it up. Changing this password regularly is a good security practice. The process on an iPad involves accessing your settings and creating a new passcode that replaces your old one.

To change your iPad passcode, start by opening the Settings app — it's the gray icon with gears on your home screen. Tap "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode," depending on which iPad model you have. You'll be asked to enter your current passcode to proceed. This is a security measure that prevents someone else from changing your passcode without your permission.

After you enter your current passcode, look for the option that says "Change Passcode." Tap it, and you'll be asked to enter your current passcode one more time for verification. Then you'll create your new passcode. You can choose between a six-digit numeric code, a custom numeric code of any length, a four-digit numeric code, or an alphanumeric code (letters and numbers mixed). Most people choose a six-digit code because it's more secure than four digits but still reasonable to remember.

When creating your new passcode, avoid using obvious numbers like your birth year, anniversary, or sequential numbers like 123456. A stronger passcode uses a random mix of numbers that would be harder for someone to guess. Write your new passcode down and store it in a safe place, like a locked drawer or a password manager app. Don't write it on a sticky note attached to your tablet. After you confirm your new passcode by entering it twice, the change takes effect right away. Your old passcode will no longer work.

If you forget your new passcode, you'll need to reset your iPad through iCloud or a computer, which is a more involved process. For this reason, it's important to remember your new passcode or write it down somewhere secure before you finish changing it. You can also use the recovery process if you absolutely forget it, but it will erase all data on your tablet unless you have a backup.

Takeaway: Change your iPad passcode through Settings by selecting "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode," choosing "Change Passcode," and creating a new six-digit code. Store your new passcode in a secure location so you don't forget it.

Changing Your Device Password on an Android Tablet

Android tablets use a similar approach to iPads but with slightly different menu names and options. Your Android device password (called a PIN, pattern, or password) unlocks your tablet when you turn it on or wake it from sleep. Changing this security feature is straightforward and takes only a few minutes.

Begin by opening the Settings app on your Android tablet. The Settings app typically looks like a gear icon and appears on your home screen or in your app drawer. Once Settings is open, look for options related to security or lock screen settings. Different Android manufacturers name these sections differently — you might see "Security," "Security & Privacy," "Lock Screen," or "Biometrics and Security." Scroll through the settings menu until you find the section about screen lock or device security.

Once you find the lock screen settings, you'll see your current lock method listed — it might say "PIN," "Password," or "Pattern." Tap on this option. You'll be asked to enter your current PIN, password, or pattern to verify you're the device owner. Enter your current security code to proceed.

After verification, you'll be asked to choose what type of lock method you want. Your options include a PIN (a numeric code), a pattern (where you draw a shape by connecting dots), or a password (alphanumeric with letters and numbers). Most users choose a PIN because it's quick to enter but harder to guess than a pattern. Select your preferred method and follow the prompts to create your new security code.

For a PIN, choose a six-digit or longer code with numbers that don't follow an obvious pattern. Avoid using birthdates, anniversaries, or addresses. If you choose a pattern, create one with at least four connected dots in a way that wouldn't be obvious to someone watching you use your tablet. The pattern should not spell out obvious shapes or follow a simple path. Once you've created and confirmed your new code, your Android tablet will use it immediately for all lock screen authentication.

Takeaway: Access your Android tablet's Settings menu, find the security or lock screen section, and create a new PIN, pattern, or password. Choose a code that isn't based on personal information and is different from any previously used codes.

Changing Your Apple ID Password on an iPad

Your Apple ID is your account with Apple that controls everything related to your iPad — your app purchases, iCloud storage, email, and settings. Your Apple ID password is different from your device passcode and protects access to this account. Changing your Apple ID password is an important security step if you think someone knows your password or if you haven't changed it in several years.

To change your Apple ID password on an iPad, open Settings and tap your name at the top of the menu. This takes you to your Apple ID account settings. Look for an option that says "Password & Security" or "Security." In this section, you'll find an option to change your password. Tap "Change Password." You'll be asked to enter your current Apple ID password first to verify you're the account owner.

After entering your current password, you'll create a new one. Apple has specific requirements for Apple ID passwords: they must be at least eight characters long and include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters (like !@#$%^&*). For example, a strong Apple ID password might be "BlueMoon#2024" — it has uppercase and lowercase letters, a number, and a special character. Avoid using common words or phrases, your Apple ID email address, or your previous passwords.

When you create your new Apple ID password, you'll need to enter it twice to confirm it's correct. After you confirm, your new password takes effect immediately. You may be signed out of some apps or services on your iPad and asked to sign back in with your new password. This is normal and is a security feature. You might also see a notification asking if you want to update your password on other Apple devices — you can do this, or you can keep your old password on those devices if you prefer.

It's worth noting that changing your Apple ID password does not change your iPad's device passcode. These are two separate passwords that protect different things. Your device passcode locks your physical tablet, while your Apple ID password protects your online account. Both are important to security, and both should be strong and unique.
