How to Change Your Florida Driver License Address

Understanding Florida Driver License Address Changes

Your driver license address must match where you currently live in Florida. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) requires residents to update their address within a certain timeframe after moving. This guide provides information about how the address change process works in Florida.

When you move to a new residence in Florida, your driver license still shows your old address until you notify DHSMV. This creates a mismatch between your official identification and your actual location. Law enforcement officers may question why your license doesn't match your current address, though having an outdated address is not itself illegal. However, it can create complications when you need to verify your identity for various purposes.

Florida law requires you to notify DHSMV of your address change within a specific period. The state considers your driver license a form of identification that should reflect current information. Unlike some states that charge fees for address changes, Florida allows you to update your address through multiple methods, and most methods do not require a fee if you are only changing your address and not renewing your license.

The address change process differs depending on whether your license is still valid or expired. A valid license means one that has not passed its expiration date. An expired license requires renewal, which is a separate process from a simple address change. Understanding which category your license falls into will help you determine which method to use.

Practical takeaway: Before starting an address change, verify your current license expiration date by checking the back of your license card. This will determine which process you should follow.

Methods to Change Your Address Online

Florida offers an online method to change your driver license address through the DHSMV website. This method is available if your license is currently valid (not expired) and you are only changing your address. The online process typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes to complete.

To use the online method, you will need to visit the official DHSMV website and locate the driver license address change section. You will provide your driver license number, date of birth, and other identifying information. The system will verify your identity using information from your driver license record. Once verified, you can enter your new Florida address.

The online system has certain limitations. If your license has been expired for more than 6 months, you cannot use this method. If you are changing your name at the same time as your address, you must use a different process. Additionally, if there are any flags or holds on your license, the online system may not allow you to proceed, and you would need to visit a driver license office in person.

After completing the online address change, DHSMV will process your request and mail you a corrected license to your new address. This typically takes 7 to 10 business days. During this time, your old license remains valid for identification purposes. You do not need to surrender your old license; simply destroy it once you receive the corrected one.

One advantage of the online method is that it avoids waiting in line at a driver license office. According to DHSMV, the online service processed over 2 million transactions in 2023, making it one of the most used methods for address changes in the state.

Practical takeaway: If your license is valid and you are only changing your address, start with the online option on the DHSMV website. This is usually the quickest method and requires no fee.

Changing Your Address at a Driver License Office

If you cannot use the online method or prefer to change your address in person, you can visit any Florida driver license office. These offices are located throughout the state, with at least one in every county. Finding your nearest office is possible through the DHSMV website by entering your ZIP code.

To change your address at a driver license office, bring your current driver license and one form of proof of your new Florida address. Acceptable documents include a utility bill dated within the last 60 days, a lease agreement, a mortgage statement, or a government document with your new address. The document must show your name and new address.

Visit times at driver license offices vary by location, but many offices are busiest during midday hours and on Fridays. Some offices now use online appointment systems where you can reserve a specific time slot, reducing wait times. Check your local office's website to see if appointments are available in your area. Even without an appointment, you can walk in, though you may wait 30 minutes to several hours depending on the time and day.

When you visit the office, bring your proof of address document and your current license to the counter. The clerk will verify your information and enter your new address into the system. If you are only changing your address and your license is not expiring within a certain timeframe, there is typically no fee. You will then receive a corrected license in the mail within 7 to 10 business days.

Some driver license offices are more crowded than others. Offices in less populated areas often have shorter wait times. If you live near multiple offices, you might consider visiting a less busy location in a nearby county to save time.

Practical takeaway: Call or check online before visiting a driver license office to learn wait times and whether appointments are available. Bring your current license and a recent utility bill or other proof of your new address.

Changing Your Address by Mail

Florida allows you to change your driver license address by mail if your license is currently valid. This method is useful if you live far from a driver license office, have limited mobility, or prefer not to visit in person. The process takes longer than online or in-person methods, typically 15 to 20 business days total.

To change your address by mail, obtain the appropriate form from the DHSMV website. The form you need is typically titled something like "Change of Address" or "Address Correction." You will fill in your driver license number, current address, new address, and sign the form. Some forms require you to have your signature notarized, while others do not. Check the specific form instructions to see if notarization is required.

With your completed form, include a copy (not the original) of one document that shows your new Florida address. Again, acceptable documents include recent utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, or government documents. Mail everything to the address listed on the form, which is typically the DHSMV office that handles address changes.

After DHSMV receives and processes your mailed request, they will send a corrected license to your new address. You will also receive confirmation that your address change has been processed. Keep any confirmation documents until you receive your new license.

A disadvantage of the mail method is that it takes the longest. Additionally, if something is missing from your mailed request, DHSMV may send the materials back to you, which delays the process further. Always include copies of required documents and double-check that your form is complete before mailing.

Practical takeaway: Use the mail method if visiting an office is impractical. Allow at least 3 weeks for the entire process, and keep copies of everything you send to DHSMV.

What to Do If Your License Is Expired

If your driver license has expired, you cannot use the simple address change process. Instead, you must renew your license, and you can update your address as part of the renewal. The renewal process is more involved than a simple address change and may require additional documents depending on when your license expired and what renewal method you use.

For licenses expired less than 6 months, you can renew online on the DHSMV website if you meet certain conditions. During the online renewal, you will have the option to update your address at the same time. For licenses expired more than 6 months, you must renew in person at a driver license office.

If your license expired between 6 months and 5 years ago, you have options for how to renew. You can visit a driver license office in person and bring proof of residency (your new address document) along with your expired license. You may also need to bring additional documents such as proof of identity or proof of Social Security number, depending on DHSMV requirements at the time.

License renewal typically costs a fee, which varies based on the validity period you choose (3, 5, or 8 years). The fee for a 5-year renewal is currently around $75 for a regular license. This is separate from any address change fee, which is typically zero.
