How To Change Your Discord Password Guide

Understanding Discord Password Security Basics

Your Discord password is the primary key to your account. It controls who can access your messages, servers, friends list, and any personal information stored in your profile. Discord stores passwords using encryption technology, which means the company doesn't actually see your real password—only a scrambled version of it. This security measure protects you if Discord's systems were ever compromised, because hackers would only get the encrypted version, not your actual password.

A strong Discord password contains a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like exclamation points or dollar signs. Discord requires passwords to be at least 6 characters long, but security experts recommend using at least 12 characters for better protection. The longer and more random your password is, the harder it becomes for someone to guess or crack it using automated tools.

Many people reuse the same password across multiple websites and apps. This creates a serious security risk. If one website gets hacked, someone could use that password to access your Discord account and all your other accounts. Using a unique password just for Discord means that even if another service is compromised, your Discord account remains protected.

Discord also offers additional security features beyond passwords, such as two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second verification method, like a code from your phone, whenever you log in from a new device. While this guide focuses on changing your password, understanding password basics helps you make informed decisions about your overall account security.

Practical Takeaway: Create a password that is at least 12 characters long, uses a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and is completely different from passwords you use elsewhere.

Step-by-Step Process for Changing Your Password on Desktop

Changing your Discord password on a computer takes just a few minutes. First, open Discord and make sure you're logged in. Look at the bottom of the left sidebar where you'll see a username and a gear icon. Click that gear icon to open your User Settings. This takes you to a menu with many account-related options.

Once User Settings opens, look for the "Account" tab on the left side of the screen. Click on it to expand account-related options. Scroll down until you find the section labeled "Password" or "Change Password." You'll see a field asking for your current password. Enter the password you currently use to log into Discord. This verification step confirms that you're the real account owner making this change.

After entering your current password, Discord will show you two new fields: "New Password" and "Confirm Password." Type your new password in the first field. Make it something you haven't used before and something that doesn't match any other passwords you use. Then type that exact same password again in the "Confirm Password" field. This double-entry system catches typos before you save the change.

Before you click the save button, read through your new password one more time to make sure it's correct. A common mistake is mistyping the new password, which locks you out of your account. Once you're confident the password is typed correctly in both fields, click the button to save the change. Discord will confirm that your password has been changed successfully.

Practical Takeaway: When changing your password, type it slowly and carefully in both the "New Password" and "Confirm Password" fields to prevent typos that could lock you out.

Changing Your Password on Mobile Devices

The process for changing your Discord password on a phone or tablet is very similar to the desktop version, though the layout looks different. Open the Discord app and make sure you're logged in to your account. Look at the bottom of the screen for a row of icons. You should see one that looks like a person or profile icon—this is usually on the far right. Tap that icon to access your profile menu.

After tapping the profile icon, you'll see several options. Look for one labeled "Settings" or a gear icon. Tap on it to open your settings menu. On mobile, the menu structure is different from desktop, so you may need to scroll to find the account settings. Look for a section called "Account" or something similar. Tap on it to see account-related options including password settings.

Scroll through the account settings until you find the password change option. Tap on it to open the password change screen. Just like on desktop, you'll need to enter your current password first. Type it carefully into the field provided. Then you'll see fields for your new password and confirmation. Enter your new password in both fields, checking carefully that they match.

Mobile screens are smaller, so it's especially important to verify your new password before submitting. If you make a typo, you might not notice it right away on a small screen. After confirming both passwords match, tap the button to save your changes. Discord will notify you that the password change was successful.

Practical Takeaway: On mobile devices, take extra care when typing passwords because small screens make it easier to miss typos. Consider using your phone's password generator or manager if available.

What To Do If You Forget Your Current Password

If you try to change your password but can't remember your current password, you have another option. On the password change screen, look for a link that says "Forgot your password?" or something similar. Click or tap that link. Discord will send you a password reset email to the email address associated with your account. This process works even if you're already logged in—it's Discord's way of ensuring that only the real account owner can change the password.

Check your email inbox for the message from Discord. It may take a few minutes to arrive, so wait a moment before assuming something went wrong. If you don't see it in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder—sometimes password reset emails get filtered there by mistake. The email will contain a link that takes you to a password reset page. This link expires after a certain amount of time, usually a few hours, so don't wait too long before using it.

Click the link in the email to go to Discord's password reset page. Here you'll enter a brand new password without needing to provide your old one. This is a security measure—it prevents someone from easily changing your password if they gain temporary access to your email. After entering your new password twice, submit the change. Your password is now reset, and you can log back into Discord using this new password.

If you're having trouble receiving the reset email, double-check that the email address associated with your Discord account is one you can actually access. If you've lost access to your old email address, you may need to contact Discord's support team for additional help. They can verify your identity through other means and assist with account recovery.

Practical Takeaway: Save your password reset email or write down your Discord-registered email address somewhere safe, so you can recover your account if you forget your password.

Staying Secure After Changing Your Password

After you change your password, Discord logs you out of all your devices. This means you'll need to log back in on any phones, tablets, or computers where you use Discord. This is actually a good security feature—it makes sure that no one else has access to your account on their devices. When you log back in, use your new password. This also protects you in case someone had somehow gotten access to your account before you changed the password.

After logging back in, take a moment to check your account activity. In your User Settings under the Account tab, you can usually see a list of active sessions or devices where Discord is logged in. Look through this list and make sure you recognize all the devices listed. If you see a device you don't own or can't remember using, you can log that device out. This removes Discord's access from that device and makes your account more secure.

Consider enabling two-factor authentication if you haven't already. This feature adds a second layer of security beyond your password. With 2FA turned on, anyone trying to log into your account from a new device must provide a special code from your phone, even if they know your password. This makes it much harder for someone to take over your account. You can set up 2FA in your User Settings under the "Account" or "Security" section.

If you've reused your old password on other websites or apps, consider changing those passwords too. This prevents someone who might have guessed or obtained your old password from accessing those other accounts. It's a good practice to review all your important online accounts periodically and make sure
