How to Change Language Settings on Your Devices

Understanding Device Language Settings Across Different Platforms

Language settings on your devices control the display language for menus, notifications, system messages, and applications. Nearly all modern devices—smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart devices—allow you to change these settings to match your preferred language. According to Statista, over 7,000 languages exist worldwide, yet most devices support between 50 and 100 of the most commonly spoken languages. When you change your language settings, the operating system translates interface elements into your chosen language, though this typically does not translate content you create, like documents or emails you write.

Different device types store language settings in different locations within their system menus. Windows computers, Mac computers, iPhones, Android phones, and tablets each have their own method for accessing and modifying language preferences. Some devices use a single system-wide language setting that applies to all apps and programs, while others allow you to set different languages for different applications individually. Understanding where these settings live on your specific device type prevents confusion and saves time when you need to make changes.

Language settings often appear alongside other regional preferences, including date format, time format, and currency display. For example, someone in France might set their language to French but also adjust their date format to display as "25/12/2024" rather than "12/25/2024." These regional settings work together to customize how your device displays information according to local conventions. Some devices offer language packs that must be obtained from the manufacturer's servers, while others include multiple languages already installed on the device.

Practical takeaway: Before changing language settings, take a screenshot or write down the exact menu path you followed to reach the language options. This creates a reference point if you need to change the language back or troubleshoot problems. If you accidentally change your device to a language you don't recognize, you can usually navigate by memory or icon recognition to find the settings menu again.

Changing Language Settings on iPhone and iPad

Apple devices running iOS (for iPhones) or iPadOS (for iPads) store language settings in the Settings app. To change your language, open the Settings app—the gray gear icon typically found on your home screen—and scroll down to find "General." Tap General, then look for "Language & Region." This section displays your current language at the top. When you tap on the language option, your device shows a list of available languages, typically arranged alphabetically. Languages are displayed in their native names; for example, "Español" for Spanish, "Français" for French, and "Deutsch" for German. Selecting any language from this list immediately changes your device's interface to that language.

The "Language & Region" menu contains several related settings beyond just the primary language choice. You can select your region, which affects how dates, times, phone numbers, and measurements display. A device set to English language with United States region will show temperatures in Fahrenheit and dates as month/day/year, while the same language with United Kingdom region will show temperatures in Celsius and dates as day/month/year. The region setting also determines which app stores and services are available to you.

If you have multiple languages you want to use, iOS and iPadOS allow you to add secondary languages. In the "Language & Region" section, you can add additional languages by tapping "Add Language." This creates a list of your preferred languages in order of priority. When apps support multiple languages, your device will attempt to display content in your first language, then fall back to your second language if the app doesn't support your primary choice. This feature proves particularly useful for people who are bilingual or multilingual.

For individual app language settings, some apps allow you to override your system language. Open the app you want to adjust, go to that app's internal settings (usually accessed through a menu icon or a settings option within the app), and look for a language preference. Not all apps offer this option—many simply use whatever language your device is set to. After changing your device language, some apps may require closing and reopening to display the new language properly.

Practical takeaway: If you frequently switch between languages, set up your secondary language in the "Language & Region" menu. Your device will remember this preference, and you can quickly toggle between languages without navigating back to settings repeatedly. iOS allows you to access this menu quickly by using the Settings app's search function—simply open Settings, swipe down to reveal the search bar, and type "Language."

Changing Language Settings on Android Phones and Tablets

Android devices, which power over 72% of smartphones globally according to IDC, access language settings through the Settings app, but the exact menu path varies slightly depending on the manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, etc.). To find language settings on most Android devices, open Settings and look for "System" or "About phone," depending on your version. Within System settings, tap "Languages and input" or "Language and keyboard." This section displays your current language prominently, usually at the top of the menu. Tapping on the language option opens a list of available languages, which you can scroll through and select.

Google Pixel devices, which run pure Android without manufacturer customization, place language settings at Settings > System > Languages and input > Languages. From there, you can see your current language and tap the plus (+) icon to add additional languages. The order of languages in your list determines priority—your device will display content in your first language when possible, then use subsequent languages as fallbacks. You can reorder your language list by holding and dragging languages up or down to change their priority.

Samsung devices organize language settings slightly differently, typically under Settings > General management > Language and input > Language. The process remains similar—you select from a list of available languages and can add multiple languages if desired. Samsung's interface may also show options for keyboard language, which controls what character sets appear on your typing keyboard. This distinction matters if you type in multiple languages; setting your keyboard language ensures you can input characters specific to that language.

Android also allows per-app language settings in some cases. Starting with Android 13, Google introduced the ability to set individual app languages without changing your entire system language. To use this feature, go to Settings > Apps, select a specific app, tap "Language," and choose a different language for just that app. This feature works on newer Android versions (13 and later) and on apps that support it. Older Android versions and apps don't offer this granular control, so they default to using your system language.

Practical takeaway: After changing your Android device's language, restart the device to ensure all system elements and apps update to display the new language. Some apps cache their language setting when first launched, so a restart forces them to refresh. Also note that changing your system language may reset some keyboard preferences or input methods, so you may need to re-configure these settings afterward if you use specialized keyboards.

Changing Language Settings on Windows Computers

Windows computers, used by approximately 73% of desktop users worldwide, provide multiple methods to change language settings. The most straightforward approach works on Windows 10 and 11: click the Start button (Windows logo) in the bottom left corner, type "language settings" into the search box, and select "Language settings" from the results. This opens the Language & region panel where your current language appears at the top, labeled as "Display language." To change your display language, click on your current language and select a different one from the dropdown menu.

When you select a new display language, Windows may need to obtain language files from Microsoft's servers if they aren't already installed on your computer. This process may take several minutes depending on your internet connection speed. During this time, you should keep your computer connected to the internet and avoid shutting down. Once the language files finish downloading, Windows will typically ask you to sign out and sign back in for the changes to take full effect. When you log back in, your entire interface—menus, buttons, dialog boxes, and system messages—will display in your chosen language.

Windows also offers regional format settings separate from display language. While your display language controls the words shown in menus, your regional format controls how dates, times, currency, and numbers appear. You can set these independently; for example, you might want your interface in English but your dates formatted according to German standards. To adjust regional formats, stay in the Language & region settings and find "Regional format." Click it and choose your preferred region. This setting affects how Excel displays numbers, how Outlook formats dates in emails, and similar applications.

For keyboard language input, Windows allows you to add multiple input methods. In Language & region settings, find "Keyboard" and click "Add a keyboard." Select the language you want to type in, which may offer multiple keyboard layouts
