How to Change Fonts on Your Devices

Understanding Font Basics and Why You Might Want to Change Them

Fonts are the styles and shapes of letters, numbers, and characters that appear on your screen. Every device—whether it's a computer, smartphone, or tablet—comes with several built-in fonts you can use. When you change a font, you're selecting a different visual style for text you read or create. This might include changing from a serif font (letters with small lines at the ends) to a sans-serif font (clean letters without those lines), or switching to a decorative or specialty font for specific purposes.

People change fonts for many reasons. Some fonts are easier to read than others, especially for people with visual processing differences or those who work on screens for extended periods. Different fonts convey different moods—formal fonts work well for business documents, while casual fonts might suit creative projects. Font size and style also affect how much text fits on a screen or page. Larger fonts make reading easier but take up more space, while smaller fonts let you see more content at once.

Understanding why you want to change fonts helps you choose the right option for your situation. For example, if you're creating a resume, you might select a professional, easy-to-read font like Arial or Calibri. If you're designing a birthday invitation, you might choose something more decorative. If you're reading text on your phone and experience eye strain, you might increase the font size or switch to a font designed for screen reading, like Helvetica or San Francisco.

Most devices include font options that are already installed and ready to use. You won't need to purchase or obtain anything—the fonts are part of your device's built-in features. Learning where these options are located and how to access them is straightforward once you know what to look for on your specific device type.

Practical Takeaway: Identify what you want to accomplish with a font change—whether it's improving readability, changing a document's appearance, or customizing your device's display—before you start exploring your options.

Changing Fonts on Windows Computers

Windows computers store fonts in a central location and make them accessible across most programs. To change the font in a document or text file, you typically use the formatting toolbar at the top of your application. In Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or similar programs, you'll see a font dropdown menu that displays the current font name. Clicking this dropdown reveals a list of all fonts installed on your computer. You can scroll through the list to find a font you like, and when you click on it, the selected text changes to that font style.

To change a font in Word: First, select the text you want to change by clicking and dragging your mouse over the words. Once the text is highlighted, look for the font dropdown menu (usually on the left side of the formatting toolbar). Click the dropdown arrow next to the font name, and a list appears showing fonts like Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, and many others. Each font name appears in its own style, so you can see what it looks like before selecting it. Click your choice, and the highlighted text updates immediately.

If you want to change the default font for all new documents you create, you can set a new default in Word. Go to the Home tab, select the font you want, then click the small arrow in the lower right corner of the "Styles" section. Choose "Modify," then select "New documents based on this template" before clicking OK. This makes your chosen font appear automatically in all future documents.

Windows also allows you to change fonts in your system settings, which affects how text appears throughout your entire computer. Go to Settings, then select "Ease of Access," then "Display." Here you can adjust the font size for text across your system. You can increase the size to 125%, 150%, or higher, which makes reading easier but may affect how much content fits on screen at once.

Some programs have their own font settings separate from the system fonts. Web browsers like Chrome or Edge allow you to change font sizes and styles in their settings menus. Email clients like Outlook let you set default fonts for composing messages. Checking each program's settings or preferences menu will reveal font customization options specific to that application.

Practical Takeaway: Use the font dropdown in your program's toolbar to change text style, and explore Settings > Ease of Access > Display to adjust system-wide font sizes for easier reading across all your programs.

Changing Fonts on Mac Computers

Mac computers include a font manager and system-wide font controls that work similarly to Windows but with Mac's specific interface. In applications like Pages, Word for Mac, or Google Docs, you'll find a font menu in the toolbar. The process is nearly identical to Windows: select your text, click the font dropdown menu, and choose from the available fonts. Mac computers come with fonts like San Francisco (Apple's default), Helvetica, Times New Roman, Georgia, and many others already installed.

To change fonts in a Mac application: Select the text you want to modify using click-and-drag. Then locate the font selector in the toolbar—it often shows the current font name. Click on it to reveal a dropdown list of available fonts. Each font displays in its own style so you can preview it. Click your selection, and the text changes immediately. Some Mac applications use a Format menu instead of a toolbar; click Format, then Font, then Show Fonts to access the font selector.

Mac's Font Book application gives you direct access to all fonts on your system. You can open it by going to Applications > Utilities > Font Book. Here you can see all installed fonts, preview what they look like, and enable or disable fonts as needed. This is useful if you want to organize your fonts or temporarily hide ones you don't use regularly. Font Book also lets you install additional fonts by downloading font files and opening them in Font Book, though most users find the pre-installed fonts sufficient.

To adjust system-wide font sizes on Mac, go to System Preferences, select Accessibility, then choose Display. Mac offers font size adjustments and options to increase contrast, which can make reading easier across all applications. You can also enable "Increase contrast" to make text stand out more against backgrounds. These settings affect how text appears throughout your entire system, in emails, web browsers, and documents.

In specific applications like Mail or Notes, you can set default fonts in the preferences or settings menu. Open the application, go to Preferences (usually in the application menu at the top of the screen), and look for font options. You can often set a default font, size, and color for new messages or notes you create.

Practical Takeaway: Use the font dropdown in Mac applications to change text style, access Font Book to see all available fonts, and adjust system Display settings for easier reading across your entire computer.

Changing Fonts on iPhone and iPad

iPhones and iPads offer limited font changes compared to computers, but they do include some options. You cannot change fonts globally across the entire system as you can on a Mac or Windows computer, but you can adjust text size and weight, and some apps allow font selection within the application itself. Most font customization on iOS devices focuses on making text easier to read rather than changing visual styles.

To adjust text size on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, then select Accessibility, then Display & Text Size. Here you can use a slider to increase the font size for system text throughout the device. This affects how text appears in Mail, Messages, Settings, and many built-in apps. The size adjustment is dramatic—you can increase text substantially if you're experiencing difficulty reading. Below the size slider, you'll find a toggle for "Larger Accessibility Sizes" which offers even larger options if the standard sizes aren't sufficient.

In the same Accessibility menu, you can toggle "Bold Text," which makes text heavier and more prominent throughout your device. This can improve readability for people who have difficulty distinguishing thin text. Another useful option is "Increase Contrast," which makes text and interface elements stand out more against their backgrounds. Some people use the "Reduce Transparency" option to make windows and backgrounds more solid, which can make text easier to read.

Individual apps often have their own font and text settings within their preferences. Apple Books, for example, lets you change font style, size, and background color when reading. When reading an ebook, tap the font icon (usually an "A" symbol), and a menu appears with font choices and a size slider. News apps, note-taking apps, and reading apps typically include similar customization options. Check an app's settings or preferences menu to see what font options are
