How to Change Date and Time on Your iPhone

Understanding iPhone Date and Time Settings

Your iPhone's date and time settings control several important functions on your device. The correct date and time affect how your phone displays information, schedules events, and manages notifications. When your iPhone's clock is inaccurate, you might miss appointments, receive notifications at odd times, or experience problems with apps that depend on precise timing.

Apple devices typically set the date and time automatically through a feature called "Set Automatically," which connects to your carrier's network or connects through Wi-Fi to update these settings. This automatic feature relies on your iPhone's connection to internet-based time servers. However, there are situations where you might want to manually adjust these settings. For example, if you travel across time zones frequently, you may want to understand how your phone handles these changes. Additionally, if your automatic settings are malfunctioning, knowing how to make manual adjustments becomes valuable.

The date and time settings on your iPhone are stored in the device's system settings, separate from your other personal information. These settings don't sync across your Apple devices automatically—each device maintains its own date and time configuration. Understanding where these settings are located and how they work will help you troubleshoot timing issues and manage your device more effectively.

Your iPhone runs on iOS, which is Apple's operating system. Depending on your iOS version—whether you're running iOS 17, iOS 18, or another version—the appearance of your settings screens may vary slightly. However, the fundamental process of changing date and time remains consistent across different iOS versions. The steps in this guide apply to iPhones running recent versions of iOS.

Practical Takeaway: Before making any changes, identify whether your date and time are already set to automatic or if they're currently on manual settings. This will help you determine whether you need to make adjustments or troubleshoot connection issues.

Accessing the Date and Time Settings Menu

To change your date and time settings, you'll need to open the Settings app on your iPhone. The Settings app is typically located on your home screen and displays a gear icon. If you can't find it on your main home screen, you can search for it using the search function. Swipe down from the top of your screen (or up from the bottom on older iPhone models), then type "Settings" into the search box that appears.

Once you open the Settings app, you'll see a list of options arranged vertically. The Settings menu contains categories like General, Display, Sounds and Haptics, Privacy, and many others. The date and time settings are located in the General section. Look for the word "General" in your settings list and tap on it. This will open a submenu with various system-level options for your device.

Within the General settings menu, scroll down until you locate "Date & Time." This option typically appears near the bottom of the General menu, along with other system settings like Keyboard, Language & Region, and Reset. When you tap on "Date & Time," a new screen will open showing your current date and time settings, along with options for adjusting them.

The appearance of this screen will depend on whether your "Set Automatically" toggle is currently turned on or off. If it's turned on, you'll see fewer adjustment options available. If it's turned off, you'll see more fields where you can manually enter specific date and time information. Understanding this distinction is important because it determines what adjustments you can make and what options will be available to you.

Practical Takeaway: Bookmark the path to these settings in your mind: Settings > General > Date & Time. This three-step path will get you to the date and time controls whenever you need them in the future.

Using Automatic Date and Time Settings

The "Set Automatically" feature is the default setting on most iPhones and is designed to keep your date and time accurate without requiring manual input from you. When this toggle is turned on, your iPhone connects to your mobile carrier's network or to Wi-Fi-based network time services to receive precise time information. This automatic synchronization happens silently in the background and updates whenever necessary.

To enable automatic date and time settings, open Settings, go to General, then tap Date & Time. Look for the toggle switch next to "Set Automatically." If the toggle appears green or is positioned to the right, the automatic setting is already turned on. If the toggle appears gray or is positioned to the left, you can tap on it to turn on automatic date and time synchronization.

When "Set Automatically" is enabled, your iPhone will also automatically adjust for daylight saving time changes. In the United States, daylight saving time occurs in March when clocks move forward one hour, and in November when clocks move back one hour. Your iPhone handles these transitions without requiring any action from you. This feature uses your location and regional settings to determine when these adjustments should occur.

The automatic setting also includes a "Time Zone" option that you may notice on your screen. When automatic settings are active, your iPhone determines your time zone based on your location data. However, you can manually select a specific time zone if you want to override this automatic detection. This is useful if you're traveling or if you want your device to display time in a different time zone than your current location. Simply tap on the "Time Zone" field to see a list of available time zones and select the one you prefer.

Practical Takeaway: If your date and time ever seem incorrect, your first troubleshooting step should be to verify that "Set Automatically" is turned on. Most timing issues are resolved simply by ensuring this setting is active and that your device has a strong internet or cellular connection.

Manually Setting Date and Time

There are situations where you may need to manually set your date and time instead of using the automatic feature. This might be necessary if you're experiencing connectivity issues that prevent automatic synchronization, if you're testing your device's behavior, or if you need your device to display a different time zone than where you're currently located. To set date and time manually, you first need to turn off the "Set Automatically" toggle.

Open Settings, navigate to General, then tap Date & Time. Find the "Set Automatically" toggle and tap it to turn it off. When you disable this toggle, the screen will reveal additional options for manually entering your date and time. You'll now see fields or buttons for adjusting the date and adjusting the time separately. The exact appearance depends on your iOS version, but the functionality remains the same.

To adjust the date manually, tap on the date field. Depending on your iOS version, you may see a calendar interface where you can swipe or scroll to select the correct date, or you may see a date picker with spinning wheels for month, day, and year. Navigate to the correct date by selecting the appropriate month, day, and year. Once you've selected the correct date, confirm your selection by tapping outside the date picker or by tapping a "Done" button if one appears.

To adjust the time manually, tap on the time field. You'll see hour and minute selectors that you can adjust. Some interfaces show spinning wheels that you can scroll through, while others show plus and minus buttons that allow you to increment the hours and minutes. Set the hour by scrolling or tapping until you reach the correct hour, then set the minutes. If your device displays time in 12-hour format, you may also see AM/PM options. Adjust these settings until your iPhone displays the correct time, then confirm your selection.

Practical Takeaway: When manually setting time, pay close attention to whether your iPhone is displaying 12-hour or 24-hour format. This setting is controlled separately under Language & Region settings. Double-check your time entry to ensure you've set it correctly, particularly whether you've selected AM or PM if using 12-hour format.

Troubleshooting Common Date and Time Problems

If your iPhone's date and time aren't updating correctly even with automatic settings enabled, several underlying issues might be causing the problem. The most common cause is a weak or unstable internet connection. Your iPhone needs either a strong cellular signal or an active Wi-Fi connection to receive time updates from network servers. Check that your device is connected to a reliable network by looking at the signal indicator at the top of your screen or by checking your Wi-Fi connection status.

Another frequent issue involves airplane mode being accidentally turned on. Airplane mode disables all wireless connectivity on your iPhone, preventing it from connecting to networks and receiving automatic time updates.
