How to Cancel Amazon Subscriptions and Stop Charges

Understanding Amazon Subscriptions and Recurring Charges

Amazon offers several types of subscriptions that result in regular charges to your account. The most common is Amazon Prime, which costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year and includes benefits like free two-day shipping, streaming video and music services, and exclusive deals. Beyond Prime, Amazon hosts thousands of third-party subscriptions through its Subscribe & Save program, digital magazine subscriptions, and app-based services available through the Amazon Appstore.

Many customers sign up for these services and later forget about the recurring charges. Research from the Federal Trade Commission indicates that unwanted subscription charges rank among the top consumer complaints, with Americans collectively losing billions annually to forgotten subscriptions. Unlike one-time purchases, subscriptions continue billing automatically until you take action to stop them, which is why understanding how these charges work matters.

Subscriptions appear as separate line items on your monthly billing statement. Amazon Prime shows as "AMZN.COM/BILL" or similar designation. Third-party subscriptions through Amazon appear with the vendor name. Subscribe & Save items, where Amazon automatically sends recurring products like household goods or pet supplies, show individual product charges on the date of delivery. Some subscriptions charge on your membership date, while others charge on specific calendar days.

Your billing method depends on what payment method you set up during signup. Most subscriptions charge to the credit or debit card you've registered with your Amazon account. If you have multiple cards on file, subscriptions typically use your default payment method unless you specified otherwise during signup. Some subscriptions offer alternative payment methods like gift cards or promotional credits, but these must be redeemed before they expire.

Takeaway: Review your Amazon account statements monthly to identify active subscriptions. Look for recurring charges and note the exact names of services you're paying for, as this information helps when canceling.

Locating Your Active Subscriptions in Your Amazon Account

Finding your subscriptions requires accessing your Amazon account settings through the website or mobile app. On the Amazon website, sign into your account and look for "Account & Lists" in the top right corner. Click this dropdown menu, then select "Your Account." This takes you to the account overview page where you'll find various management options.

Within the "Your Account" section, look for a link labeled "Memberships & Subscriptions" or similar wording depending on your region and app version. This centralized location displays all active subscriptions tied to your account. The page shows each subscription name, renewal date, cost, and renewal frequency. Amazon organizes these into categories: Amazon Prime memberships, Prime Video channels, Subscribe & Save items, Kindle subscriptions, and third-party app subscriptions.

If you use the Amazon mobile app on your phone or tablet, the process is slightly different. Open the app and tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) typically in the bottom right corner. Navigate to "Your Account" then look for "Memberships & Subscriptions." The mobile version shows similar information but may display it differently depending on whether you use iOS or Android.

For Subscribe & Save subscriptions specifically, you can also find these through your "Orders" section. Go to "Returns, Orders & Accounts" and select "Your Orders." Filter by "Subscribe & Save" to view all recurring product shipments. Each subscription shows the next delivery date and the option to manage or cancel it directly from that page.

Take note of subscriptions you don't recognize or remember signing up for. Some subscriptions begin through free trial periods that automatically convert to paid subscriptions. Others result from bundled offers where a subscription was added alongside a primary purchase. Document the exact names and renewal dates of subscriptions you want to cancel before proceeding.

Takeaway: Set aside 15 minutes to review your full subscription list. Create a written or digital list showing subscription names, costs, and renewal dates, marking which ones you want to keep versus cancel.

Canceling Amazon Prime Membership and Recurring Charges

Amazon Prime cancellation works differently depending on whether you want to stop charges immediately or at the end of your current billing period. Most people choose to cancel their membership at renewal time to avoid immediate charges. On the Memberships & Subscriptions page, locate "Amazon Prime Membership" and click the option to manage or cancel it. Amazon displays your current membership status, renewal date, and cost.

When you click to cancel, Amazon offers you the option to cancel immediately or at the end of your current billing period. If you select end-of-period cancellation, you retain Prime benefits until your next renewal date, after which you'll no longer be charged. If you select immediate cancellation, Amazon typically processes a refund for your remaining membership time calculated on a prorated basis. The refund amount depends on how many days remain in your current billing period.

For monthly Prime memberships, if you're 15 days into a 30-day billing cycle, canceling immediately would refund approximately half of your $14.99 charge. For annual memberships, the refund calculation is more substantial. Amazon processes refunds to your original payment method within 3 to 5 business days. You can check your refund status by viewing your "Orders" and looking for the refund transaction.

After cancellation, you'll lose access to Prime benefits immediately (for immediate cancellation) or on your renewal date (for end-of-period cancellation). This includes two-day shipping, Prime Video streaming, Prime Music, and exclusive Prime Day deals. However, you retain access to your digital purchases like Kindle books and movies that you bought separately from Prime benefits. Your wish lists and reviews remain associated with your account.

Some users hesitate to cancel because they've enabled Prime on household accounts or shared their membership with family. When you cancel your own Prime membership, anyone you've shared it with loses access. Amazon allows separate Prime memberships for different household members, so family members can maintain their own subscriptions independently.

Takeaway: Before canceling, verify whether anyone else in your household uses your Prime membership. If so, discuss the cancellation with them first, or consider keeping the membership and splitting costs rather than losing access entirely.

Stopping Subscribe & Save and Automatic Deliveries

Subscribe & Save represents a distinct type of Amazon subscription where physical products ship automatically on recurring schedules. Common Subscribe & Save items include pet food, paper products, household cleaning supplies, personal care items, and pantry staples. These subscriptions typically offer discounts ranging from 5 to 20 percent compared to one-time purchases, which is why many customers set them up initially then forget about them.

To cancel or manage Subscribe & Save subscriptions, visit the Memberships & Subscriptions page and look for the "Subscribe & Save" section. This displays all active recurring product shipments with their names, delivery frequencies, next delivery dates, and pricing. Unlike Prime which operates as a single membership, each Subscribe & Save item functions as an independent subscription that you control separately.

You have three options for Subscribe & Save management: skip the next delivery, modify the delivery frequency, or cancel the subscription entirely. Skipping allows you to pause one or more upcoming deliveries without canceling the subscription, useful if you temporarily overstocked on a product. Modifying frequency changes how often the product arrives—for example, changing a monthly shampoo delivery to every 6 weeks. Canceling removes the item from your recurring deliveries permanently.

When you cancel a Subscribe & Save subscription, Amazon doesn't charge you again. However, if a delivery has already been processed for the current cycle, that charge won't be refunded unless you formally request a return. The timing of cancellation matters: if you cancel on the day of or after shipment, you typically cannot prevent that charge. To avoid charges, cancel before the scheduled delivery date.

Some customers accumulate Subscribe & Save subscriptions over time without realizing it. Review the renewal dates carefully. If multiple items are set to deliver on the same date, you might receive a combined shipment. If you only want to stop certain items, you can cancel individual subscriptions while keeping others active.

Takeaway: Review your Subscribe & Save list at least monthly, especially items with less frequent deliveries (quarterly or semi-annual). Cancel subscriptions for products you no longer need or can source elsewhere.
