How To Add Family Members To Amazon Prime

Understanding Amazon Prime Family Library Basics

Amazon Prime offers a feature called Amazon Household that lets you share your Prime membership with family members living in your home. This feature creates a shared family account where up to two adults and up to four teens or children can access Prime benefits together. When you add family members, they gain access to Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and other Prime perks without needing their own separate membership.

The Amazon Household structure works differently depending on the ages of family members you're adding. Adults in the household can make purchases and manage settings, while teens aged 13-17 have limited purchasing ability that adults can control. Children under 13 can access content but cannot make purchases on their own. Amazon tracks who is part of your household and what each person can do based on their role.

It's important to note that this feature requires all household members to live at the same residential address. Amazon may verify addresses to ensure the household members actually reside together. The feature is designed for families living under one roof, not for people in different locations or friends who want to share a membership.

As of 2024, Amazon Prime membership costs $139 per year or $14.99 per month. When you add family members, they don't pay additional fees—they share the cost of your single membership. This makes it a cost-effective way for multiple people in one household to benefit from Prime services.

Takeaway: Amazon Household allows up to six people living at the same address to share one Prime membership, with different permission levels based on age. Understanding these basic structure details helps you set up your family account correctly from the start.

Setting Up Your Amazon Household Account

To create an Amazon Household, you first need an active Amazon Prime membership. Log into your Amazon account and navigate to the Account & Lists section. From there, go to "Login & security" and look for the "Amazon Household" option. This is where you'll begin the process of adding family members to your existing Prime membership.

When you set up Amazon Household for the first time, Amazon will ask you to confirm your home address. This address verification is a key part of the process because Amazon uses it to verify that household members actually live in your home. Make sure the address you provide matches where family members physically reside. If you've recently moved, update your address information before starting this process.

You'll also need to designate the "account holder" or primary adult who manages the household. This person has full control over who can be added, what content restrictions apply, and purchase permissions. There can be a second adult in the household with similar permissions, but the primary account holder should be someone you trust to manage these settings.

Before inviting family members, consider what permissions and restrictions make sense for your household. Do you want teens to make purchases? Should children be able to watch all Prime Video content, or do you want to restrict certain shows and movies? Amazon lets you set these controls before you add anyone, which makes the setup process smoother.

The setup process typically takes just a few minutes if you have all the information ready. You'll need email addresses for each person you want to add, so gather these beforehand. Having this information prepared before you start helps the process move along without interruptions.

Takeaway: Start by confirming your address in your Amazon account settings, then navigate to Amazon Household to begin setup. Have email addresses ready for family members you want to add, and think through what permissions make sense for your situation.

Adding Adult Family Members to Your Household

Adding a second adult to your Amazon Household is straightforward. From the Amazon Household settings, select the option to add an adult. Amazon will ask for their email address—this should be the email associated with their Amazon account. If they don't have an Amazon account yet, they'll need to create one before being added to the household.

When you enter the adult's email address, Amazon sends an invitation to that account. The other adult must accept this invitation to complete the process. They'll receive an email notification asking them to confirm they want to join your household. This confirmation step helps verify that the person actually wants to be part of the household and that you have their permission to add them.

Once the second adult accepts the invitation, they have equal access to Prime benefits and can manage household settings. Both adults can add or remove other family members, set parental controls, and make changes to the household. This shared management approach works well for couples or co-parents who need equal control over family account settings.

Each adult maintains their own Amazon purchase history and recommendations, but they share the Prime membership benefits. If one adult buys something through Amazon, it doesn't affect what the other adult sees in their recommendations. However, both adults can see what other household members are watching or reading if they check the household settings.

It's important to understand that adding a second adult means that person can make changes to your household settings and add or remove other members. Only add someone as an adult if you fully trust them with this level of control. If you want to add someone with fewer permissions, consider adding them as a teen instead, which has more restrictions.

Takeaway: To add another adult, provide their email address and wait for them to accept the invitation. Both adults will then have equal control over household settings and Prime benefits, so only add someone as an adult if you trust them with full management access.

Adding Teens to Your Amazon Household

Teens aged 13 to 17 can be added to your Amazon Household with restricted permissions. Unlike adults, teens cannot make purchases without approval, and you can set content restrictions on what they watch or read. This makes the teen account type ideal for older children who want access to Prime services but shouldn't have full spending authority.

To add a teen, you'll need their email address or mobile phone number. If the teen doesn't have an Amazon account, they'll need to create one first using their email. Amazon will send them an invitation that they must accept to join the household. The teen should review the invitation and confirm they want to be part of your household.

Once a teen is added, you can set spending limits and purchase restrictions through your Amazon Household settings. You can require approval for any purchase, set a monthly spending limit, or block purchases entirely. Some families allow teens to make small purchases under a certain amount without approval, while others require approval for everything. You decide what works best for your family's needs.

Teens can access Prime Video and other Prime services, but you can restrict content based on ratings. For example, you can set Prime Video to only show content rated TV-14 or lower, preventing access to mature content. These restrictions help ensure teens only access age-appropriate material while still giving them access to entertainment options suitable for their age.

Teens can also have their own watchlist on Prime Video and can rate shows and movies, but their recommendations won't affect what other household members see. Each teen maintains their own profile and viewing history, so you can see what they've been watching if you need to monitor their activity.

Takeaway: Add teens with their email address and set purchase limits and content restrictions through household settings. These controls let teens access Prime services while keeping them from making unauthorized purchases or viewing mature content.

Adding Children Under 13 to Your Amazon Household

Children under 13 can be added to your Amazon Household as child accounts. These accounts have the most restrictions of any household member type. Children cannot make any purchases on their own, cannot access adult content, and their activities can be closely monitored by parents. This account type is designed for younger children who want to watch kid-friendly content through Prime Video.

Adding a child is different from adding teens or adults because children under 13 don't need their own email address. Instead, you create a child profile directly within your Amazon Household settings. You provide the child's name and birthdate, and Amazon creates their profile. Parents or guardians maintain full control over the account and all associated settings.

Child accounts come with built-in content filtering. Prime Video automatically restricts access to content rated below PG, helping ensure children only see age-appropriate programs. You can further customize these restrictions in the household settings if you want to be even more selective about what your child can watch.

Children's accounts cannot make any purchases whatsoever. This means they can't accidentally charge items to your Prime account even if they have access to the device. All purchases must be made by an adult account holder. This protection is one of the main reasons families choose to create
