How to Add a Pin to Your Google Map

Understanding Google Maps and Its Pin Feature

Google Maps is a web-based mapping service that lets users view satellite imagery, street maps, and terrain maps of locations around the world. Beyond viewing maps, Google Maps includes a feature that allows you to mark specific locations with pins, also known as markers or place markers. These pins serve as visual indicators on the map that help you remember, organize, and share important locations.

A pin on Google Maps functions as a bookmark or flag for a particular address or coordinate. When you add a pin, Google Maps stores that location with any notes or labels you create. You can add pins for many reasons: marking your home address, noting a favorite restaurant, identifying a meeting location, planning a trip route, or remembering where you parked your car. Each pin appears as a colored marker on the map, making locations easy to spot at a glance.

Google Maps differentiates between two main types of location markers. The first type includes existing places already listed in Google Maps' database—restaurants, stores, parks, and other public locations. These have their own pages with photos, reviews, hours, and contact information. The second type consists of custom pins you create yourself, which can mark any location you choose, even places not yet listed in Google Maps.

Understanding this distinction matters because the method for adding a pin varies slightly depending on whether you're marking an existing place or creating a custom location marker. Both options are available on Google Maps through the web version and the mobile app, though the interface differs between devices. Learning to use both methods gives you flexibility in organizing your map.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding pins, consider what you want to mark and why. This helps you decide whether you're marking an existing business or creating a custom location for personal reference.

Adding a Pin to an Existing Place on Google Maps

When you want to mark a location that already exists in Google Maps—such as a restaurant, store, or park—you begin by searching for that place. Open Google Maps in your web browser or mobile app and use the search box at the top to enter the name or address of the location. Google Maps will display results, and you can click on the place you want to mark. This opens the place's information card, which shows the name, address, phone number, website, user reviews, photos, and hours of operation if available.

Once you've found the place, look for a star icon on the information card. On the web version, this star appears in the upper right of the place information panel. On mobile devices, the star icon appears near the top of the place information screen. Clicking or tapping this star adds the location to your "Saved Places." Google Maps automatically organizes saved places into lists, with a default "Saved" list where new pins go unless you specify otherwise.

If you want to organize your pins into custom categories, Google Maps allows you to create labeled lists. When you save a place, a pop-up window appears asking where you'd like to save it. You can choose existing lists like "Want to go" or "Starred places," or you can create a new list with a name you decide. For example, you might create lists named "Restaurants to Try," "Weekend Hikes," or "Coffee Shops Near Work." This organizational system helps you keep related locations grouped together for easier reference later.

After saving a place, you'll see confirmation that it's been added to your chosen list. The star icon will typically change appearance—often becoming filled in with color—to show that the location is saved. You can save as many places as you want, and each one becomes a pin on your Google Maps that you can view, revisit, and share with others.

Practical Takeaway: Use descriptive names when creating custom lists for your saved places. This makes it faster to find the right pins when you need them later.

Creating Custom Pins for Locations Not in Google Maps

Sometimes you want to mark a location that doesn't yet have a business page or listing in Google Maps. This might be a friend's house, a hiking trailhead, a parking spot, or a property you own. Google Maps allows you to create custom pins for any location by specifying coordinates or clicking directly on the map where you want the pin to appear.

On the web version of Google Maps, right-click on the exact spot where you want to place a pin. A small menu will appear with several options, including "Add a label" or similar text depending on your region. Click this option and a text box appears where you can type a name or description for your custom pin. Type whatever information would help you identify this location later—for example, "Home," "Sarah's Birthday Party," or "Mountain Vista Trail Parking." After typing your label, press Enter to confirm.

On mobile devices, the process differs slightly. Open Google Maps and locate the area where you want to add a pin. Long-press (press and hold) on the exact spot on the map where you want the pin to appear. A pin will immediately drop at that location, and a card will appear at the bottom of your screen. This card shows the coordinates and address of where you pressed. Tap the card or scroll up to see more options. Look for an option to add a label or save this location, then type your custom name for the pin.

Custom pins you create appear on your personal Google Maps with whatever label you assigned. These pins sync across your devices if you're signed into the same Google account, so a pin you create on your phone appears on your computer and vice versa. You can edit custom pin labels at any time by clicking or tapping on the pin and selecting edit options. You can also delete pins you no longer need.

Practical Takeaway: Use clear, descriptive labels for custom pins so you understand their purpose months later when you review your map.

Accessing and Managing Your Saved Pins

Once you've added pins to Google Maps, you can access them from your account's saved places. On the web version, click the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the upper left corner of the map. A sidebar menu opens, and you'll see a "Your places" option. Click this to view all your saved locations and custom lists. You'll see every list you've created, along with the number of pins in each list. Click on any list to view just the pins within that category.

On mobile devices, tap the menu icon at the bottom right of your screen (usually three dots or horizontal lines depending on your version). Scroll down to find "Saved" or "Your places" and tap it. This shows you all your saved places organized into lists. Tap any list to expand it and see all the pins you've saved there. This mobile view lets you quickly see your organized locations whether you're at home or traveling.

You can make several changes to your pins once they're saved. To remove a pin from a list, find it in your saved places, tap or click it, and look for a delete or remove option. To move a pin to a different list, open the pin's details and select an option to change which list it belongs to. Some versions of Google Maps allow you to remove pins from one list while keeping them in others if you've saved the same location to multiple lists.

Google Maps also allows you to share your saved places with other people. When viewing a list of pins, look for a share button or option. Clicking this generates a link you can send to friends, family, or colleagues. Recipients can view your list of locations and even add them to their own maps. This feature works well for sharing vacation itineraries, restaurant recommendations, or planning group activities where everyone needs to know the meeting locations.

Practical Takeaway: Regularly review and organize your saved places lists so they remain useful. Delete pins you no longer need and update labels if locations or purposes change.

Using Pins for Trip Planning and Navigation

One of the most practical applications for Google Maps pins is organizing trips and planning routes. When you're preparing for a vacation or a road trip, you can add pins for every location you plan to visit. This might include hotels, restaurants, attractions, rest stops, and gas stations. As you add each location, it appears on your map, giving you a visual representation of your trip's geography and helping you plan efficient routes between stops.

After adding all your pins for a trip, you can use Google Maps' routing feature to determine the best order to visit them and the travel time between locations. Click on two pins to get directions, and Google Maps shows you the route, estimated travel time, and alternative routes. If you're driving across multiple states, you might add pins for
