How Much Money Orders Cost at the Post Office

Understanding Money Order Basics and Why People Use Them

A money order is a piece of paper that works like a check, but it's prepaid. When you buy a money order at the Post Office, you pay the full amount upfront—both the money you want to send and a small fee. The Post Office then issues you an official document that the recipient can cash at a bank, check-cashing store, or the Post Office itself. Money orders have been around since the 1860s and remain a common way to send money without using a personal check or electronic transfer.

People use money orders for many reasons. Some don't have bank accounts and need a safer way to send money than carrying cash. Others use them to pay bills, send rent to landlords, or transfer funds to family members. Money orders work well when the recipient doesn't accept personal checks or when you want a paper trail showing the transaction occurred. They're also useful for sending money through the mail because they're more secure than cash—if a money order gets lost or stolen, you can report it and request a replacement.

The Post Office isn't the only place to buy money orders. Many grocery stores, pharmacies, check-cashing businesses, and convenience stores also sell them. However, prices vary between locations. The Post Office typically offers competitive rates, which is one reason many people purchase them there. Understanding how much they cost helps you budget and compare options with other providers.

Money orders differ from wire transfers and other payment methods in important ways. A wire transfer moves money electronically and often arrives within hours, but costs more—usually $15 to $50 depending on the bank and amount. A money order takes longer to process if mailed but costs less upfront. Checks are free if you have a checking account, but require a bank account and the recipient must trust you won't overdraw. Money orders work for people without bank accounts and provide the recipient assurance that funds are already paid.

Practical takeaway: Money orders are useful when you need to send funds securely without a bank account or when the recipient won't accept personal checks. Knowing Post Office pricing helps you determine if a money order makes sense compared to other payment methods.

Current Money Order Fees at USPS Locations

As of 2024, the United States Postal Service charges different fees based on the money order amount. For amounts up to $500, the fee is $1.45. For money orders between $500.01 and $1,000, the fee is $1.95. These prices apply at all Post Office locations nationwide. The fee is separate from the face value of the money order—if you want to send $300, you pay $300 for the money order itself, plus $1.45 in fees, totaling $301.45.

The Post Office raised money order fees in January 2024. Before that increase, fees were $1.30 for orders up to $500 and $1.85 for orders above $500. The 15-cent and 10-cent increases reflect inflation and operational costs. These rates represent some of the lowest fees available in the market. For comparison, many grocery stores and check-cashing businesses charge $2 to $5 per money order, and some charge even more for larger amounts.

One important detail: the Post Office limits money orders to a maximum of $1,000 per order. If you need to send more than $1,000, you must purchase multiple money orders. For example, sending $2,500 would require purchasing three money orders: two for $1,000 each (paying $1.95 in fees each) and one for $500 (paying $1.45 in fees), for a total fee of $5.35. This limitation doesn't affect most transactions, since the average money order sent is under $500.

Different Post Office locations don't charge different rates—prices are standardized nationwide. Whether you visit a Post Office in New York City or a rural location in Montana, you'll pay the same fee. This consistency makes it simple to know what you'll spend before you go. Some Post Offices inside retail locations like grocery stores may have different hours or slightly different procedures, but they charge the same USPS fees.

Practical takeaway: Budget $1.45 for money orders up to $500 and $1.95 for amounts between $500.01 and $1,000. If sending more than $1,000, you'll need multiple orders and should calculate the total fees accordingly.

How to Purchase a Money Order at the Post Office

To buy a money order at any Post Office, you'll need to provide specific information. First, you need to know who will receive the money—this person is called the payee. You'll provide their full name exactly as they want it to appear on the money order. You'll also need to know the exact amount you want to send. Additionally, you should bring a form of identification, such as a driver's license or passport, though some Post Offices may not require it for smaller transactions.

When you arrive at the Post Office counter, tell the clerk you want to buy a money order and provide the payee's name and the amount. The clerk will fill out a form with your name as the purchaser (called the remitter), the payee's name, and the amount. You'll review this information for accuracy before the clerk issues the money order. The money order itself is a formal document with security features like watermarks and special paper to prevent counterfeiting. The clerk will also give you a receipt showing the transaction details.

Payment for money orders must be cash or debit card at the Post Office. The Post Office does not accept credit cards for money order purchases, though this policy may vary at specific locations. You'll pay the face value of the money order plus the fee at the time of purchase. For example, if you're sending $250, you'll hand over $251.45 in cash or use your debit card. The clerk will then provide you with the completed money order and your receipt.

Before leaving the Post Office, check that your money order shows the correct payee name, the right amount, and your name and address. Keep your receipt in a safe place. The receipt proves you purchased the money order and includes a tracking number. If the money order is lost or stolen, you can contact the Post Office with your receipt information to report it and request a replacement or refund, though this process takes time—typically 30 days or longer.

Practical takeaway: Bring cash or a debit card and the payee's exact name and desired amount to the Post Office. Review your money order for accuracy before leaving, and keep your receipt for record-keeping and potential replacement claims.

Comparing Post Office Money Order Costs to Other Retailers

The Post Office offers some of the lowest money order fees available, but other retailers also provide this service. Understanding how prices compare helps you make the most cost-effective choice for your situation. Walmart, one of the largest money order providers in the United States, typically charges $0.70 to $1.00 for money orders up to $1,000, making it cheaper than the Post Office for most transactions. However, Walmart limits its money order service to certain locations and may not be convenient if you don't have a Walmart nearby.

Check-cashing businesses and payday loan stores often charge higher fees than the Post Office—typically $2 to $5 per money order depending on the amount. Grocery stores like Kroger, Safeway, and others may charge $1.50 to $3 per order. Banks sometimes offer money order services to their customers, and fees vary widely—some banks charge nothing for account holders while others charge $5 or more. Convenience stores and pharmacies usually charge $1.50 to $2.50, though prices vary by location and franchise.

The lowest-cost option overall is often Walmart at $0.70 for most orders, followed closely by the Post Office at $1.45. However, convenience matters. If you're already at the Post Office for other services, buying a money order there costs only slightly more than Walmart. If you're closer to a Walmart, you could save 75 cents on a $500 order. The savings on a single transaction are small, but if you regularly send money orders, these differences add up. Sending 12 money orders per year through the Post Office at $1.45 each costs $17.40 in fees, while the same through a check-cashing business at $3 each would cost $36.
