What Is USCIS InfoPass and Why People Use It

USCIS InfoPass was a system that allowed people to schedule in-person appointments at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices without needing to go through the typical phone line process. The system operated as an online scheduling tool where individuals could select a date and time that worked for them, then receive a confirmation for their visit to a local USCIS office.

People used InfoPass appointments for several reasons. Some needed to speak with an immigration officer about the status of a pending case. Others wanted to submit documents in person, report changes to their information, or ask questions about their immigration matter. The system was particularly helpful for those who had difficulty reaching USCIS by phone, as the phone lines often experienced long wait times and high call volumes.

USCIS offices across the country used this appointment system to manage visitor flow and reduce crowding in their waiting areas. By allowing people to schedule ahead, offices could better plan staffing levels and ensure that officers were available when individuals arrived. This system operated for many years and became a familiar tool for immigrants, their families, and immigration attorneys.

As of 2023, USCIS discontinued the InfoPass system. The agency replaced it with new appointment scheduling methods through their online account system and phone services. Understanding what InfoPass was and how it worked remains useful for people researching immigration processes and for those who may encounter references to this system in older documents or guidance.

Practical Takeaway: InfoPass was a free scheduling system that USCIS no longer operates. If you need to schedule an appointment with USCIS today, you should use their current online system through your USCIS account or call their customer service line, rather than looking for InfoPass.

How the InfoPass System Functioned

The InfoPass system was relatively straightforward to use, though it did have specific steps. People would visit the USCIS website and enter basic information such as their name, date of birth, and A-number (also called an alien number or receipt number). This A-number was the identifier that USCIS assigned to individuals with pending immigration cases. Without this number, people could not schedule through the system.

Once someone entered their information, the system would verify it against USCIS records. If the information matched, the person could then view available appointment times at their nearest USCIS office location. The system typically showed appointment slots weeks or even months in advance, depending on office availability. People could choose a time that worked for their schedule and confirm their appointment.

After booking, the system would generate a confirmation notice. This document was important—people were expected to bring it to their appointment along with their identification and any relevant documents. The confirmation showed the date, time, and location of the appointment, along with instructions about what to bring and what to expect.

The system recorded the appointment in USCIS databases, which meant that when someone arrived at the office, staff already knew to expect them. This reduced wait times compared to simply walking in without an appointment. People could also use the system to reschedule or cancel appointments if their plans changed, though there were sometimes restrictions on how close to an appointment date changes could be made.

The InfoPass system did not require payment of any kind—it was a free service provided by USCIS. No third-party websites or services needed to be involved. People accessed it directly through the official USCIS website, which helped ensure they were using a legitimate government tool.

Practical Takeaway: InfoPass required an A-number to function and let people choose from available time slots rather than waiting for a call or office walk-in. Because the system no longer exists, research what your current USCIS options are based on your specific case type and location.

Why USCIS Ended the InfoPass System

In February 2023, USCIS announced that it would discontinue InfoPass on March 31, 2023. The agency stated that they were consolidating their appointment scheduling into their online account system, which is called myUSCIS. This change was designed to streamline how people interact with USCIS and move toward a more integrated digital experience.

One reason for the change involved modernizing USCIS technology. The InfoPass system, while useful, was an older tool that did not integrate as smoothly with USCIS's newer online systems. By requiring people to use myUSCIS instead, the agency could manage all communications and appointments in one place. This also meant fewer separate systems for USCIS staff to maintain and fewer places where technical problems could occur.

USCIS also wanted to encourage more online interaction rather than in-person appointments for certain types of requests. The myUSCIS system allows people to check case status, receive updates, and manage their account information entirely online. For people with straightforward requests or status questions, an in-person appointment might not always be necessary.

Another factor was security and identity verification. The older InfoPass system had some limitations in how thoroughly it could verify someone's identity online. The newer myUSCIS platform includes stronger security features and makes it more difficult for unauthorized people to schedule appointments using someone else's information.

Despite the discontinuation, USCIS still provides ways for people to meet with officers when they have matters that require in-person attention. People can now schedule appointments through their myUSCIS account, and they can also call USCIS customer service to speak with someone about scheduling options based on their specific situation.

Practical Takeaway: USCIS ended InfoPass to move their services onto a single unified platform. The transition was meant to improve security and allow better integration of services, but it required people to adjust how they schedule appointments.

Current Alternatives to InfoPass Appointments

Since USCIS discontinued InfoPass, the primary way to schedule an appointment is through a myUSCIS account. People can create a free myUSCIS account on the USCIS website by providing their email address and creating a password. Once an account is set up, they can view their case information and check whether appointment scheduling is available for their situation.

Not all types of USCIS cases allow online appointment scheduling through myUSCIS. The availability depends on the type of application or petition someone has pending. For example, people with certain family-based immigration cases, employment-based cases, or adjustment of status applications may be able to schedule. People with other case types may need to pursue different methods.

For those who cannot schedule online, USCIS customer service can help. The agency operates a phone line where people can call to discuss their case and learn about their options. The phone number is 1-800-375-5283, and the line is open Monday through Friday. Because of high call volume, people may experience long wait times, but this remains one of the main ways to reach a representative who can answer questions and discuss appointment possibilities.

In some situations, people may need to submit documents by mail rather than in person. USCIS accepts mailed applications and supporting documents, and someone can check their case status online to see what has been received. For time-sensitive matters or complex questions, mailing documents may not be ideal, but it is an option when in-person appointments are not available.

Walk-in services are limited but may be available in some locations for specific purposes. Some USCIS offices offer walk-in interviews or services on certain days for people with urgent matters. However, this varies by location, so people should call their local USCIS office or check the office locator on the USCIS website to see what options are available in their area.

Immigration attorneys and accredited representatives can sometimes schedule appointments on behalf of their clients or help navigate the scheduling process. If someone is working with an immigration attorney, the attorney's office may be able to provide guidance on the best way to proceed based on the specific case.

Practical Takeaway: To schedule an appointment today, start by creating or logging into your myUSCIS account to see if online scheduling is available. If not, call 1-800-375-5283 or visit your local USCIS office to learn about the options for your specific case.
