Understanding Common Foot Problems in Older Adults

Foot problems affect many people over 65. Studies show that approximately 87% of older adults experience some type of foot pain or discomfort. These issues range from minor irritations to conditions that significantly impact daily life and mobility. Understanding what causes these problems is the first step toward managing them effectively.

Common foot conditions in older adults include bunions, hammertoes, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and fungal infections. Bunions occur when the big toe joint becomes enlarged and painful, often due to years of pressure and genetics. Hammertoes develop when toe joints bend abnormally, sometimes from wearing tight shoes over many years. Arthritis in the feet causes joint pain and stiffness, making walking difficult. Plantar fasciitis creates heel pain, particularly noticeable in the morning or after periods of rest. Fungal infections, including toenail fungus, become more common with age as the immune system changes and circulation decreases.

Age-related changes in the feet make these conditions more likely. The skin thins, fat pads under the heel and ball of the foot diminish, and bones become more fragile. Circulation slows, making it harder for feet to heal from minor injuries. Nerve sensitivity may decrease, meaning some people don't notice small cuts or blisters until they become serious problems. Toenails thicken and become harder to trim. These natural aging processes mean feet need more attention and care than they did in younger years.

The financial impact of foot problems can be substantial. Chronic foot pain often leads to reduced activity, which contributes to weight gain, muscle weakness, and falls. Falls are a leading cause of injury-related death among people over 65. Poor foot health can also signal underlying conditions like diabetes, arthritis, or circulatory problems.

Practical Takeaway: Many foot problems develop gradually over years. Recognizing early signs—such as minor pain, swelling, or changes in nail appearance—allows for earlier intervention. A free informational guide can help you learn about the range of foot conditions, what causes them, and when professional evaluation might be appropriate.

How Daily Foot Care Prevents Common Issues

Proper foot care habits can prevent or slow the progression of many foot problems. Daily attention to foot hygiene and maintenance takes only a few minutes but yields significant results. People who practice consistent foot care report fewer infections, less pain, and better overall foot health.

Cleaning feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap removes dirt, bacteria, and dead skin. Hot water can damage sensitive skin and worsen circulation problems. After washing, drying thoroughly is essential, especially between the toes where moisture creates an environment for fungal growth. Many foot infections start in the warm, damp spaces between toes. Pat feet dry gently rather than rubbing vigorously, which can cause skin damage.

Moisturizing feet daily prevents dry, cracked skin that can lead to infection. However, avoid applying lotion between the toes, as this traps moisture and promotes fungal infections. Thick creams or specialized foot moisturizers work better than body lotions. People with diabetes or poor circulation should check with their healthcare provider before using certain products.

Toenail care requires attention as nails thicken and become brittle with age. Trim toenails straight across and slightly above the skin level to prevent ingrown nails. Use nail clippers rather than scissors for better control. If nails are too thick or hard to trim safely, professional foot care from a podiatrist becomes necessary. Some older adults find it helpful to soften nails by soaking feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes before trimming.

Inspecting feet daily catches problems early. Look at the top and bottom of each foot, between toes, and around heels. Watch for redness, swelling, cuts, blisters, or color changes. People with diabetes or numbness should inspect feet even more carefully since they may not feel small injuries. A handheld mirror or asking a family member to help makes inspection easier.

Practical Takeaway: Developing a simple daily foot care routine—wash, dry, moisturize, inspect, and trim nails—takes about 10 minutes and prevents many common problems. A resource guide can outline these steps in detail and explain why each one matters for foot health.

Choosing Appropriate Footwear for Comfort and Safety

The shoes people wear significantly impact foot health, yet many older adults continue wearing shoes that don't meet their changing needs. Proper footwear reduces pain, improves balance, and decreases fall risk. Choosing appropriate shoes is one of the most practical steps toward maintaining healthy feet.

Good shoes for older adults share several characteristics. They should have a wide toe box that doesn't squeeze the toes, allowing room for bunions or swelling without pressure. The heel should be low (less than one inch) and stable, providing support without strain. Shoes with cushioning absorb impact and reduce stress on joints, particularly important for people with arthritis. Soles should provide good grip and traction to prevent slipping on smooth surfaces. Shoes should fasten securely with laces, velcro, or buckles rather than slip-ons, which don't provide adequate support and increase fall risk.

Different shoe types serve different purposes. Walking shoes with cushioning and arch support are ideal for daily wear and exercise. Sandals or slippers should be closed-toe varieties with non-slip soles rather than open-backed styles that don't prevent falls. Dress shoes can incorporate supportive features while maintaining appearance. Athletic shoes designed for older adults offer the best combination of support, cushioning, and safety features.

Shoe shopping requires patience and attention. Visit shoe stores in the afternoon when feet are slightly swollen (their normal state) rather than in the morning. Have feet measured, as shoe sizes change with age. Try shoes on both feet and walk around the store for several minutes to ensure comfort. Shoes should feel comfortable immediately—they don't need a "break-in" period. Consider visiting specialty shoe stores that focus on supportive footwear or stores with staff trained in fitting shoes for older adults.

Custom orthotics (shoe inserts) may benefit people with specific foot problems like flat feet, high arches, or significant pain. A podiatrist can recommend appropriate orthotics that improve alignment, cushioning, and support. Some orthotics address diabetes-related foot concerns by distributing pressure more evenly.

Practical Takeaway: Proper shoes are a foundation for foot health. A guide discussing what to look for in supportive footwear and how to shop effectively helps older adults make informed choices that will serve their feet and overall safety.

When Professional Foot Care Becomes Necessary

While daily self-care is essential, many older adults benefit from professional foot care from a podiatrist. A podiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in foot and ankle health. Knowing when to seek professional evaluation helps prevent minor problems from becoming serious.

Several situations warrant a visit to a podiatrist. Persistent pain that doesn't improve with rest, over-the-counter pain relievers, or changes in shoes should be evaluated by a professional. Signs of infection—including redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage—require medical attention, particularly for people with diabetes, where infections can escalate quickly. Ingrown toenails that don't respond to at-home care, toenail fungus, or significant nail changes should be assessed. Visible deformities like bunions or hammertoes can be managed professionally to reduce pain and improve function. Difficulty walking, balance problems, or falls may indicate foot issues that a podiatrist can address.

People with diabetes especially need regular professional foot care. Diabetes affects circulation and nerve sensitivity, making foot problems more serious and harder to notice. Many insurance plans that cover Medicare include podiatry benefits for people with diabetes. A podiatrist can identify problems early and provide preventive care that stops small issues from becoming major complications.

Professional services include thorough foot examinations, removal of corns and calluses, toenail care, treatment of fungal infections, and custom orthotics. Podiatrists can also provide education about foot care specific to an individual's situation. Some podiatrists make house calls for people with mobility limitations.

Finding a podiatrist involves asking for referrals from your primary care doctor, checking insurance provider networks, or contacting the American Podiatric Medical Association. When scheduling an appointment, mention specific concerns so
