The Oklahoma City Thunder is one of 30 teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), which is the major professional basketball league in North America. Understanding how the NBA is organized helps fans appreciate how the Thunder's season works and why certain games have special significance. The league is divided into two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Within the Western Conference, there are 15 teams divided into three divisions. The Thunder is part of the Northwest Division, which includes teams from cities across the northwestern and central United States. During the regular season, teams play games against opponents from their own division, other divisions within their conference, and teams from the Eastern Conference. This structure ensures that fans see matchups with teams from across the entire league during the regular season.

The NBA regular season consists of 82 games per team, spread across approximately six months from October through April. Each team's schedule includes a mix of home games (played in Oklahoma City at Paycom Center) and away games (played in other cities). The outcome of these games determines which teams make the playoffs at the end of the regular season. The 16 teams with the best records—eight from each conference—advance to the playoffs, where they compete in a tournament format to determine the NBA champion.

The playoff structure is hierarchical, meaning the top teams in each conference receive certain advantages. Teams compete through multiple rounds of playoffs, with the best team from the Eastern Conference eventually facing the best team from the Western Conference in the NBA Finals. This championship series determines which team wins the league title that year. For Thunder fans, understanding this structure explains why regular season games matter and how the team's performance affects its path through the playoffs.

Practical takeaway: Recognize that the Thunder plays against different types of opponents throughout the season—divisional rivals, conference teams, and Eastern Conference teams—each serving different roles in determining playoff seeding.
