What North Carolina DMV Kiosks Are and Where to Find Them

North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles operates self-service kiosks at select locations throughout the state. These machines allow drivers to handle certain vehicle and license-related tasks without waiting for an appointment or speaking with a staff member. The kiosks function as automated terminals where you can complete transactions by following on-screen instructions and providing required documents.

As of 2024, North Carolina has placed kiosks in various DMV offices, particularly in high-traffic regions. The locations include facilities in Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, with additional kiosks in other regional offices. The state continues to expand this program, so the number of locations may change. You can find current kiosk locations by visiting the North Carolina DMV website or calling your local DMV office directly to confirm whether a kiosk is available near you.

The kiosks are designed to reduce wait times for routine transactions. Instead of scheduling an appointment weeks in advance or spending hours in a waiting room, you can potentially complete your task in minutes during the kiosk's operating hours. Most kiosks are available during regular DMV business hours, typically Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some locations may have extended evening hours.

The machines accept various forms of payment, including credit cards, debit cards, and sometimes cash, depending on the specific kiosk and transaction type. Each kiosk has a help button you can press if you encounter difficulties or have questions during your transaction. Staff members monitor the kiosks and can assist if the machine malfunctions or you need clarification about the process.

Practical Takeaway: Before visiting a kiosk, call your nearest DMV office or check online to confirm that a kiosk is available and that it offers the specific service you need. Not all kiosks provide the same range of services, so verification beforehand saves a wasted trip.

Understanding Which DMV Services You Can Complete at a Kiosk

North Carolina DMV kiosks handle specific, straightforward transactions rather than complex requests. The types of services available vary by location, but common options include vehicle registration renewals, address changes on driver's licenses, payment of outstanding fines or fees, and document ordering. Some kiosks also allow you to renew your vehicle's inspection, pay registration fees, or update personal information on file with the DMV.

Services that typically require in-person interaction with DMV staff—such as taking the written driver's license test, obtaining your first license, or handling commercial driving license matters—cannot be completed at a kiosk. Similarly, if your situation involves disputes, suspensions, or complex legal issues related to your driving record, you will need to visit a full-service DMV location or contact the agency directly.

The guide provides information about which specific transactions each kiosk type handles. Some kiosks are designed primarily for vehicle-related services, while others focus on driver license transactions. Understanding this distinction helps you determine whether a kiosk can serve your needs or whether you should schedule a traditional appointment at a staffed DMV office.

Before attempting any transaction at a kiosk, gather all required documents. For vehicle registration renewal, you typically need your current registration card and proof of inspection. For address changes, you may need your current license or identification card. Having materials prepared means you can move through the kiosk process without delays or incomplete submissions.

The information in the guide breaks down each available service, explaining what documents to bring, what information the kiosk will request, and what to expect regarding processing times. Processing times for kiosk transactions often differ from traditional DMV submissions; some requests are handled immediately while others may take several business days for the DMV to process and mail your new documents.

Practical Takeaway: Review the guide's section on available services and match it against your specific need. If your task is not listed as available at a kiosk, contact your local DMV office to schedule an appointment rather than wasting time at a kiosk that cannot help you.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using a North Carolina DMV Kiosk

Using a DMV kiosk follows a predictable pattern. First, you approach the machine and tap the screen or press the button to begin. The kiosk displays a main menu showing available services. Select the service that matches your needs by tapping the corresponding option on the touchscreen. The machine then guides you through a series of screens requesting information and documents.

On initial screens, you will typically enter personal identifying information such as your name, date of birth, and driver's license number or vehicle identification number, depending on the transaction type. The kiosk may ask you to insert your current license, registration card, or other documents into a scanner. These devices read the information from your card and help verify your identity and current records with the DMV system.

As you proceed through the transaction, the kiosk displays what information it has retrieved from DMV records and asks you to confirm that details are correct. This is your opportunity to catch errors. If any information appears wrong—such as an incorrect address or misspelled name—alert the staff member at the kiosk immediately rather than proceeding with incorrect data. Mistakes can result in documents being mailed to the wrong address or containing inaccurate information.

Once you confirm all information, the kiosk calculates any required fees and displays the total amount due. You then select your payment method and complete the transaction. The machine prints a receipt showing your transaction number, the services requested, fees paid, and estimated processing time. Keep this receipt as a record of your interaction and as proof of payment.

After payment, the kiosk may print documents immediately, or it may inform you that the DMV will mail your documents to your address on file. For renewals and standard transactions, delivery typically occurs within five to ten business days. If you need documents more quickly, note the transaction number and contact the DMV directly to inquire about expedited processing options, which may involve additional fees.

Practical Takeaway: Move slowly through each kiosk screen and verify information before proceeding to the next step. Taking extra time to confirm accuracy at the kiosk prevents problems later, such as receiving incorrect documents or being unable to locate your transaction in the DMV system.

Required Documents and Information for Common Kiosk Transactions

Different transactions require different documentation. For vehicle registration renewal, bring your current vehicle registration card, proof that your vehicle passed inspection within the required timeframe, and your vehicle's identification number. The proof of inspection is crucial; most vehicles in North Carolina must pass an annual safety and emissions inspection before registration renewal is permitted. If your vehicle's inspection has expired, you cannot renew registration at a kiosk and must handle this transaction at a full-service DMV office.

For address changes on your driver's license, bring your current license and a document proving your new address. Acceptable address verification documents include utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, or government correspondence showing your name and new address. The document should be dated within the last 60 days. Some kiosks allow you to photograph or scan the address verification document using the kiosk's scanner rather than submitting the original.

For payment of outstanding fines or registration renewal fees, bring your transaction number or vehicle information so the kiosk can locate your account. If you do not have this information, the kiosk can sometimes search using your driver's license number and date of birth. Have a valid payment card or cash available, and confirm the kiosk accepts your preferred payment method before beginning the transaction.

For ordering replacement documents—such as a duplicate registration card or license copy—bring identification and any transaction numbers related to your previous interactions with the DMV. This information helps the kiosk system locate your records and process your request efficiently.

The guide includes a detailed checklist for each common transaction type. Review the appropriate section before visiting the kiosk to ensure you bring everything needed. Missing documents can prevent you from completing your transaction and require a return visit. Some kiosks allow you to proceed partially through a transaction and complete it later, but this varies by location and transaction type.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents for your specific transaction and verify you have everything before leaving home. Keep documents organized in a single folder so you can locate them quickly at the kiosk, reducing transaction time.
