Understanding NFL Standings and How They Work

The NFL standings are a ranking system that shows how each team performs during the regular season. The standings track wins, losses, and ties for all 32 teams across two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference is divided into four divisions—AFC East, AFC West, AFC South, AFC North, NFC East, NFC West, NFC South, and NFC North—with four teams in each division.

The standings determine which teams advance to the playoffs at the end of the regular season. During an NFL season, which typically runs from September through December, teams play 17 games each. The standings are updated after every game, reflecting the current record of each team. A win counts as one point, a loss counts as zero points, and ties (which are rare) count as 0.5 points for each team involved.

Teams are ranked within their divisions first, meaning the winner of each division earns a playoff spot. The remaining playoff spots go to the three "wild card" teams in each conference—these are the teams with the best records that didn't win their divisions. This means that out of 32 teams, 14 teams make the playoffs: 6 from the AFC and 6 from the NFC, plus 2 additional wild card spots per conference.

Understanding how standings work is important for following the sport throughout the season. The standings show not just wins and losses, but also "games behind," which indicates how many games a team would need to win to catch the division leader. For example, if the division leader has 10 wins and a team has 8 wins, they are 2 games behind. Tiebreakers are used when teams have identical records—these include head-to-head results, division win-loss records, and other statistical measures.

Practical takeaway: Check the standings regularly to see where your favorite team stands in their division and conference. Look at the "games behind" column to understand how realistic a playoff push might be with the remaining games in the season.

Where to Find Free NFL Standings Information

Multiple websites and platforms offer free NFL standings information without requiring payment or registration. The official NFL website (NFL.com) provides standings that update automatically after each game concludes. Major sports websites like ESPN.com, CBS Sports, Yahoo Sports, and The Athletic also display current standings prominently on their homepages. These sources maintain standings throughout the regular season and update them within minutes of games ending.

Local television broadcasts and sports news networks like ESPN, NFL Network, and Fox Sports regularly display standings during games and sports programming. Many news outlets also publish standings in their sports sections. Sports apps including the official NFL app, ESPN, Yahoo Sports, and Team-specific apps from individual NFL franchises show standings in real-time during games.

Social media platforms often share standings information. Official NFL social media accounts post standings updates, and sports journalists frequently tweet or post updated standings. League-specific discussion forums and fan communities also track and share standings information among members.

These free resources typically display standings in sortable formats, allowing you to view teams by division, conference, or sort by specific statistics like wins, losses, strength of schedule, or playoff probability. Some sources provide additional context like power rankings (subjective rankings of team quality), playoff scenarios, and strength of schedule information for remaining games.

The information presented across different sources is generally consistent since all sources reference the same official game results. However, some sites may add their own analysis, statistics, or rankings alongside the official standings. Reading from multiple sources can provide different perspectives and additional context beyond raw standings data.

Practical takeaway: Bookmark at least two standings websites so you can quickly check current team records and playoff positioning whenever you want. The official NFL.com site is reliable for basic standings, while ESPN offers additional analysis and context.

Key Statistics Included in NFL Standings

NFL standings display several important statistics beyond just wins and losses. The "win-loss-tie" record shows the total games won, lost, and tied by each team. The winning percentage (often shown as a decimal like .625 for a team with 10 wins and 6 losses) indicates how frequently a team wins. Games behind (GB) shows the mathematical distance between a team and the division leader, calculated by taking the difference in wins and dividing by two (since each game represents one win for one team and one loss for another).

Points for (PF) and points against (PA) show the total points scored by a team and allowed by a team across all games played. These statistics matter because a team can have a good record but allow more points than they score if they've won close games. Conversely, a team might score many points but have a losing record if they lose close games. The point differential (the difference between points for and points against) is sometimes listed and indicates whether a team's record is in line with their performance. Teams often perform better or worse than their point differential suggests.

Strength of schedule refers to the combined winning percentage of all opponents a team has played or will play. This statistic helps explain why teams with similar records might have played different levels of competition. A team with a 8-4 record against stronger competition might be considered stronger than another 8-4 team that played weaker opponents.

Division records show how teams performed specifically against divisional opponents, which is important because division winners earn playoff spots regardless of overall record. Some standings also show conference records, indicating performance within the team's conference. Streak information shows whether a team is currently winning or losing and how many consecutive games they've won or lost.

Practical takeaway: Look beyond just the win-loss record. A team's point differential and strength of schedule can reveal whether their record accurately reflects team quality, helping predict future performance and playoff likelihood.

How Standings Change Throughout the Season

NFL standings shift constantly as games are played throughout the 17-game regular season. Each week, teams play games on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday nights (and occasionally other days). After each game concludes, standings are updated to reflect the result. A team that wins moves up in the standings or maintains their position, while a team that loses typically falls or stays in place depending on how other teams perform.

Early season standings (September and October) show initial trends but carry less weight in determining final outcomes since teams still have many games remaining. A team that starts 4-1 can still miss the playoffs if they lose many games later, while a team starting 1-4 can recover. As the season progresses, standings become more stable because teams have played more games and their true strength becomes clearer statistically.

The final weeks of the season (late November and December) create dramatic standings changes as teams compete for playoff positioning. Teams fighting for wild card spots may jump several positions based on single games. Division races often come down to the final week when one win can determine who wins the division. The standings also indicate which teams have been eliminated from playoff contention—this typically happens around week 14 or 15 when a team's mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs becomes zero.

Playoff scenarios become relevant in the final weeks, showing how different game outcomes would affect standings. For example, if Team A plays Team B in week 17, and Team C is currently in a wild card spot, the scenario would show what happens to standings if Team A wins versus if Team B wins. These scenarios help fans understand which outcomes would help or hurt their team's playoff chances.

Mid-season trades, injuries to star players, and coaching changes can cause standings shifts beyond just wins and losses. A team acquiring a major player at the trade deadline might improve their win rate. Injuries to key players might cause a sharp decline in performance. Checking standings over time reveals these patterns and trends.

Practical takeaway: Track standings throughout the season rather than checking only at the end. Early season performance matters less than late season performance, and monitoring how standings change weekly helps you understand team momentum and playoff scenarios.

Using Standings to Understand Playoff Positioning

NFL playoff positioning is determined primarily by standings. The 14 teams that make the playoffs consist of 6 division winners from each conference (6 AFC teams and 6 NFC teams) and 2 wild card teams from each conference (the third and fourth best records in each conference regardless of division). This structure means that winning your division is important even if your record isn't the best in the conference, because division winners receive higher playoff seeds.
