Understanding MDU Resources Billing Basics

MDU Resources is a utility company that provides electricity, natural gas, and water services to customers across multiple states, primarily in the northern and western United States. The company serves residential and business customers through various regional divisions. Understanding how your MDU Resources bill works is the first step toward managing your utility expenses effectively.

Your MDU Resources bill typically contains several key components. The billing statement shows your meter readings, usage amounts, and the rates applied to that usage. Different times of year may bring different rates, and various charges may appear on your bill depending on your service type and location. The bill also includes taxes and any applicable fees or adjustments. Reading your bill carefully helps you understand what you're paying for and identify any unusual charges.

MDU Resources bills customers based on actual meter readings in most cases, though estimated readings may occur when meter access is limited. The company reads meters on a regular schedule, typically monthly. Your bill will show the previous meter reading, your current meter reading, and the difference between the two—this is your usage for the billing period. The date range covered by your bill appears near the top of the statement.

Different customer types receive different billing structures. Residential customers pay one rate, while commercial and industrial customers may have rates based on demand charges, time-of-use pricing, or other factors. If you receive service through multiple accounts or service types, you may receive separate bills for each. Understanding which accounts you maintain with MDU Resources helps you track all your utility expenses.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your current MDU Resources bill and identify these key sections: account number, meter reading date range, current and previous meter readings, usage amount, and the rates applied. This information forms the foundation for understanding your billing.

Payment Options and Methods Available

MDU Resources offers multiple payment methods to accommodate different customer preferences and situations. Knowing your available options ensures you can select the method that works best for your circumstances. The company accepts payments through various channels, each with different features and processing times.

Online payment through the MDU Resources website represents one of the most convenient options for many customers. The website portal allows you to view your bill, make one-time payments, or set up automatic recurring payments. To use this method, you'll need your account number and typically either your password or the ability to verify your identity through other information. Online payments generally post within one to two business days.

Automatic bank draft payments represent another common option. With this method, MDU Resources withdraws your payment directly from your bank account on a date you specify each month. This option helps ensure you never miss a payment deadline and requires no action on your part once set up. To arrange automatic payments, you typically need your routing number and account number from your bank.

Phone payments allow customers to pay using a credit card, debit card, or bank account information over the telephone. MDU Resources maintains a customer service line where payment representatives can process your payment while you provide the necessary information. This method works well for customers who prefer speaking with someone directly or who need to discuss their bill while making a payment.

Mail-in payments remain available for customers who prefer traditional methods. You can mail a check or money order with your payment stub to the address listed on your bill. This method typically takes longer to process than electronic payments, so account for mailing time when using this option. Always include your account number with your payment to ensure proper credit.

In-person payment locations may be available in certain areas. Some MDU Resources offices or authorized payment centers accept walk-in payments in cash or check form. Contact your local MDU Resources office to determine if this option exists in your service area.

Practical Takeaway: Review the back of your bill or visit the MDU Resources website to identify which payment methods are available in your service area, then select one that fits your routine and preferences. Set up automatic payments if possible to ensure consistent on-time payments.

Reading Your Bill and Identifying Charges

A typical MDU Resources bill contains numerous line items and sections that may seem confusing at first glance. Learning to read each section helps you understand exactly what you're paying for and spot any errors or unusual charges. The bill is organized in a logical way once you understand the standard format.

The account summary section appears near the top of your bill and shows your account number, service address, billing period dates, and the total amount due. This section also typically shows your due date and any past-due balance from previous billing periods. Some bills display a comparison to your usage from the same month the previous year, which helps you see whether your usage is increasing or decreasing.

The usage section displays your meter readings and shows the calculation of your consumption. For electric service, usage appears in kilowatt-hours (kWh). For natural gas, usage appears in therms or cubic feet, depending on your location. For water service, usage appears in gallons or hundred-cubic-feet units. The usage section multiplies your consumption by the applicable rate to determine your usage charge. Seasonal rates may apply, meaning different rates for different times of year.

Demand charges appear on many commercial bills and some residential bills in certain areas. These charges reflect the highest amount of power you used at any single point during your billing period, rather than just your total usage. Reducing peak demand can lower these charges significantly.

Adjustments and credits appear as separate line items and reflect any changes to your account during the billing period. These may include adjustments for billing errors from previous months, credits for account changes, or promotional adjustments. Understanding what these adjustments represent helps you verify their accuracy.

Taxes appear as a percentage of your bill in most locations. Your bill should clearly show the tax rate applied and the tax amount calculated. Electric, gas, and water taxes may differ from each other and from sales tax.

The bill also includes any fixed or base charges. These charges appear regardless of your usage and cover the cost of maintaining your account and the infrastructure that delivers service to your home or business. Base charges typically appear daily on your bill, multiplied by the number of days in your billing period.

Practical Takeaway: Keep several months of bills together and compare the same line items across months. If a particular charge appears inconsistent, contact MDU Resources customer service with the specific dates and amounts to have them review the charge.

Ways to Review Billing Discrepancies

Billing errors do occur, and knowing how to identify and address them protects you from overpaying. Most discrepancies result from simple errors in reading, calculation, or meter issues rather than intentional overbilling. Taking systematic steps to review your bill helps catch problems early.

Start by comparing your current bill to previous bills for the same season. Usage patterns should remain relatively consistent unless your household size changed or you made significant changes to your appliances or heating and cooling habits. A sudden spike in usage that doesn't correspond to any changes in your situation may indicate a problem worth investigating.

Check your meter reading on your bill against any meter readings you've recorded yourself. Many customers take photos of their meters monthly to track their own usage. If your recorded reading differs significantly from the reading on your bill, contact MDU Resources to report the discrepancy. The company may send a representative to verify the meter reading.

Review all charges line by line, including taxes and fees. Verify that your rate category is correct—make sure you're not being charged a commercial rate if you're a residential customer, for example. Check that any adjustments or credits mentioned on your bill match any changes you requested or situations you experienced during the billing period.

If you notice you were billed for a period when you weren't receiving service—perhaps you moved out or service was disconnected—report this immediately. Incorrect billing dates represent a common issue that billing departments can usually correct quickly.

Estimated readings occasionally appear on bills when meters cannot be read due to weather, access issues, or other circumstances. If you see "estimated" or "E" next to your meter reading, you can provide your actual meter reading to MDU Resources to ensure the next bill reflects accurate consumption. Contact customer service with your actual reading.

When you identify a potential discrepancy, contact MDU Resources customer service with specific information: your account number, the billing period in question, the specific charge or reading in question, and why you believe it's incorrect. Provide any supporting documentation, such as your own meter readings or photos of your meter. The company will investigate your concern and contact you with findings.
