What Is the Lone Star Card and How It Works

The Lone Star Card is the electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card used in Texas to distribute benefits from several state and federal assistance programs. Rather than receiving paper checks or vouchers, eligible individuals and families receive their benefits loaded onto this single card, which works similarly to a debit card at authorized retailers.

The card itself is a plastic payment card issued by the state of Texas. When you have an active Lone Star Card account, your monthly benefits are automatically deposited onto the card. You can then use this card to make purchases at stores that accept it. The card has a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that you set, which protects your account from unauthorized use.

Several assistance programs use the Lone Star Card system in Texas, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. SNAP provides monthly benefits that can be used to purchase food items at participating grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers. The Lone Star Card may also distribute benefits from other state assistance programs depending on your situation.

Understanding how the card functions is important because it affects how you manage your monthly benefits. When you swipe your card at a store, the amount of your purchase is deducted from your available balance. You can check your remaining balance through various methods, including online portals, phone lines, or by asking the cashier at the register when you make a purchase. The card itself does not expire, though you may need to renew your benefits or recertify your status periodically depending on program rules.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) oversees the Lone Star Card program. If you have questions about your specific card or account, HHSC maintains customer service lines and online resources where you can find information about your benefits. Having a clear understanding of how the card operates helps you use it effectively and avoid confusion when managing your benefits throughout the month.

Practical Takeaway: The Lone Star Card is your access tool to receive and use state and federal assistance benefits in Texas. Think of it as a specialized debit card that holds your monthly benefits and allows you to make authorized purchases at participating retailers.

Understanding Your Lone Star Card Account

Your Lone Star Card account contains specific information about your benefits and how much money you have available to spend. Learning how to understand your account details helps you track your spending and plan your purchases throughout the month. Your account balance shows the total amount of benefits you have available to use. This balance updates each time you make a purchase with your card. It also changes on specific dates when your monthly benefits are deposited. Most SNAP benefits are deposited on a set schedule throughout the month, typically between the 1st and the 28th of each month. Your specific deposit date depends on the last digit of your case number. Knowing your deposit date helps you plan when your benefits will arrive each month.

Transaction history on your account shows every purchase you have made with your Lone Star Card. This history includes the date of the transaction, the store where you made the purchase, and the amount spent. Reviewing your transaction history periodically helps you verify that all purchases were authorized by you and can help you notice patterns in your spending. If you see a transaction you did not make, this could indicate unauthorized use of your card.

Your account may display information about different benefit programs if you receive benefits from more than one program. For example, if you receive both SNAP and other state assistance, your account may show separate balances or combined information depending on how the system displays the data. Some people receive benefits only for food through SNAP, while others may receive additional benefits. Understanding what programs show on your account helps you know what benefits you have available.

You can access your account information through the MyBenefits website, which is the online portal for Texas benefits, or by calling the customer service number on the back of your Lone Star Card. Having regular access to this information keeps you informed about your benefits.

Practical Takeaway: Review your Lone Star Card account balance and transaction history regularly to track your spending, confirm your benefits have been deposited, and catch any fraudulent activity early.

Common Questions About Lone Star Card Use

People have many questions about using their Lone Star Card for everyday purchases and benefit management. Understanding answers to these common questions prevents misuse of your benefits and helps you make the most of your assistance.

One common question involves where you can use your Lone Star Card. SNAP benefits loaded onto your Lone Star Card work at most grocery stores, supermarkets, and farmer's markets that display the SNAP logo. You cannot use SNAP benefits at restaurants, convenience stores that don't participate in the program, or for non-food items. However, some retail stores that have a grocery section do accept SNAP benefits for qualifying food items while refusing them for other products in the same store. The store will separate eligible from ineligible items at checkout. General merchandise stores, pharmacies, and gas stations typically do not accept SNAP benefits.

Another frequent question concerns what items you can purchase with SNAP benefits. SNAP covers fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, breads, cereals, and other food items intended for home preparation and consumption. Items like hot prepared foods, alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medicines, and household supplies are not covered by SNAP. Seeds and plants that produce food are covered, but decorative plants are not. Understanding these rules before you shop helps you avoid attempting to purchase ineligible items and wasting time at checkout.

People often ask whether their Lone Star Card balance rolls over if they don't spend all their benefits in a month. For SNAP benefits, any balance that remains at the end of the month carries forward to the next month. You don't lose unused benefits, which means you can save them for larger purchases or times when you need more food. However, benefits may expire after a
