However, SNAP does not cover prepared foods, hot foods, vitamins, medicines, pet food, or household supplies.

How to Use Your SNAP Benefits at Wailuku Retailers

Using SNAP benefits at retailers in Wailuku is straightforward once you understand the process. Your SNAP benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, which you use similarly to a debit card at checkout. Before heading to the store, it's helpful to understand which items are covered by SNAP and which are not. Eligible items include fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, grains and bread, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, dairy products, eggs, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, snack foods like crackers and chips, and beverages like milk and juice. Non-eligible items include hot or prepared foods, vitamins and medicines, pet food, household supplies like soap and paper products, alcohol, and tobacco. Many stores have signage or shelf labels indicating which items are SNAP-eligible, though you can also ask staff for clarification.

If you have both SNAP benefits and cash or a credit card, most retailers will process the SNAP payment first, then you can pay for any non-SNAP items with another payment method. This approach allows you to use your full benefits for food while paying out-of-pocket for household items or other purchases. Understanding this process helps you plan your shopping cart and speed up checkout.

When shopping, keep track of your remaining monthly benefit balance so you can plan your purchases.
