According to Nielsen data from 2024, approximately 85% of American households subscribe to at least one streaming service, while about 40% still maintain traditional cable or satellite subscriptions. Many households combine multiple services to create a viewing experience that fits their needs and budget. Understanding what options exist is the first step toward making decisions about how you want to watch television.

The landscape includes several categories: traditional paid TV services (cable and satellite), subscription streaming platforms, free streaming services with advertisements, and live TV streaming options. Each category offers different programs, pricing structures, and features. Some services focus on movies, others on television series, and some on live sports and news. The amount you pay can range from nothing per month to $25 or more, depending on what you choose.

This guide explores each major category and explains how these services work. It also discusses factors you might consider when thinking about television options, such as what programs you want to watch, how much you want to spend monthly, and whether you prefer watching on a television, computer, tablet, or phone.

Takeaway: Television options now exist across multiple categories with varying costs and content types. Learning about each category helps you understand what's available in today's market.

Traditional Cable and Satellite Television Services

Cable and satellite television have been the dominant way Americans watch television for the past 30 years. Cable services deliver television signals through underground or overhead wires, while satellite services deliver signals from orbiting satellites to a dish mounted on your home. Both require monthly subscriptions and the use of a provided equipment box.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, as of 2023, approximately 42 million American households subscribed to cable television service, while roughly 20 million subscribed to satellite service. These numbers have declined somewhat in recent years as more people explore other options, but these services remain widely used. Cable and satellite providers typically offer channel packages ranging from basic service with 50-100 channels to premium packages with 200+ channels, plus movie channels and sports packages.

Cable providers operate differently than satellite providers in several ways. Cable services often include internet and phone service bundled together, while satellite providers typically offer television only (though some partnerships provide internet through other means). Cable can sometimes experience weather-related outages in certain conditions, while satellite service may be disrupted during heavy rain or snow. Installation and equipment costs also differ between the two options.

Both cable and satellite services include features like digital video recorders (DVRs) that allow you to record programs and watch them later, on-demand content libraries where you can watch programs any time, and the ability to pause and rewind live television. Many services now offer the ability to watch some programming on mobile devices or computers when away from home. Monthly costs typically range from $50 to $150 depending on the channel package and any promotions or discounts available.

Common cable providers include Comcast (Xfinity), Charter (Spectrum), and Cox. Major satellite providers include DIRECTV and Dish Network. Pricing, available channels, and specific features vary by provider and location.

Takeaway: Cable and satellite remain widely used options that provide broad channel selections, live programming, and recording capabilities, though costs are typically higher than streaming alternatives.

Subscription Streaming Services Without Ads

Subscription streaming services represent one of the fastest-growing segments of television viewing. These services deliver television shows and movies directly to your device over the internet without advertisements interrupting the content. You can watch whenever you want, as many times as you want, without worrying about live broadcast schedules. Major services in this category include Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu (ad-free option), Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+.

Netflix remains the largest streaming service with over 230 million subscribers worldwide as of 2024. The service offers thousands of television series and movies across genres including drama, comedy, documentary, action, and children's programming. Disney+ focuses on content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars properties, with over 150 million subscribers. HBO Max provides access to HBO television series, Warner Bros. movies, and exclusive original content. Amazon Prime Video combines streaming video with other Amazon Prime membership benefits.

These ad-free subscription services typically cost between $6 and $23 per month depending on the specific service and plan level. Some services offer multiple tiers with different pricing based on video quality (whether you can watch in high definition or ultra-high definition) and the number of devices that can watch simultaneously. For example, Netflix's ad-free plans range from around $7 per month for basic definition on one device to $23 per month for ultra-high definition on four devices simultaneously.

The main advantage of subscription streaming without ads is uninterrupted viewing. You watch content when you want without commercials. The disadvantage for some users is that you can only watch what's in the service's library, and that library changes monthly as titles are added and removed. Additionally, each service requires a separate subscription if you want to watch across multiple platforms.

Common questions about these services include whether content is available simultaneously across devices, how to manage passwords and sharing, and what happens to your viewing history if you cancel and resubscribe later. Each service has specific policies about account sharing and simultaneous viewing.

Takeaway: Ad-free streaming services offer on-demand access to large content libraries at moderate monthly costs, though you need separate subscriptions for each service you want to use.

Free and Ad-Supported Streaming Options

Numerous streaming services offer television shows and movies at no cost to viewers, funded entirely through advertising. These free options have become increasingly popular and now represent a significant portion of streaming viewership. Services like Tubi, Pluto TV, Freevee, Peacock Free, Hulu with Ads, and The Roku Channel offer free tiers, while services like IMDB TV provide content exclusively through an ad-supported model.

According to Nielsen, free ad-supported streaming accounted for approximately 7% of all television viewing in 2023 and continues to grow. Tubi, for example, offers over 20,000 titles including movies and television series across multiple genres. Pluto TV provides a unique experience by organizing free content into themed channels that function similarly to traditional cable television, where you can browse and tune into channels with pre-scheduled programming. The Roku Channel includes both free and paid content on a single platform.

The primary advantage of free streaming services is cost—there are no subscription fees. You can create an account and start watching immediately. The trade-off is that these services include advertisements that interrupt your viewing, typically every 8-15 minutes depending on the service. Some services require you to watch an advertisement before content starts, while others insert ads throughout your viewing similar to traditional television. Video quality on free services varies but is typically standard definition or high definition rather than ultra-high definition.

Content on free services differs significantly from paid premium services. While you may find some newer releases, free services primarily feature older movies, independent films, and library content from various studios and producers. Some television series are available, often consisting of older seasons or less recent productions. The available content changes regularly as services negotiate licensing agreements.

Many people use free ad-supported services alongside paid subscriptions, using free services for casual browsing and paid services for their preferred shows. Platforms like Peacock and Hulu offer both free and paid tiers, allowing users to start with free content and upgrade to paid if they want an ad-free experience or more content.

Takeaway: Free streaming services funded by advertising provide access to thousands of titles at no cost, though they include advertisement interruptions and feature different content libraries than premium services.

Live TV Streaming and Sports Options

Live television streaming services deliver broadcast channels, cable channels, and live content through internet streaming rather than through traditional cable or satellite infrastructure. These services allow you to watch live news, sports, and events as they happen. Services in this category include YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV, FuboTV, and DirecTV Stream.
