What Licensed Practical Nurses Do and Why Online Education Matters

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home healthcare settings providing patient care under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 702,800 LPNs employed in the United States as of 2022, with job growth projected at about 6% through 2032. This growth rate reflects increasing demand as healthcare facilities expand and aging populations require more medical services.

LPNs perform a wide range of duties including administering medications, changing wound dressings, taking patient vital signs, starting intravenous lines, and assisting with patient hygiene and comfort. They serve as a critical bridge between patients and higher-level nursing staff, often spending the most direct time with patients during their care. The role requires both technical skills and compassionate patient interaction.

Online LPN programs have become increasingly common as educational institutions recognize the need for flexible learning options. Many working adults, parents, and individuals with other commitments find that online or hybrid programs allow them to pursue nursing education while managing their current responsibilities. Online programs may include live video lectures, recorded content, virtual labs, and in-person clinical rotations at healthcare facilities in your area.

The licensing requirements for LPNs vary by state, but all states require completion of an accredited LPN program and passing the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). Some online programs are offered through community colleges, vocational schools, and private institutions, each with different formats, schedules, and costs.

Practical takeaway: Understanding what LPNs actually do and the educational pathways available helps you determine whether an online LPN program aligns with your career goals and lifestyle. Research specific job duties in your state and consider shadowing an LPN to confirm this is the right career path for you.

Types of Online LPN Programs and Program Formats

Online LPN programs come in several formats, each designed to meet different scheduling and learning needs. The most common structure is a hybrid program, which combines online coursework with in-person clinical experiences at local healthcare facilities. Typically, students complete their theoretical education online through lectures, reading assignments, quizzes, and exams, then travel to a campus or clinical site for hands-on nursing skills training and supervised patient care experiences.

Some programs offer fully online didactic (classroom) components with flexible scheduling, allowing students to watch recorded lectures and complete assignments at their own pace within certain deadlines. These asynchronous programs are particularly valuable for students who work full-time or have caregiving responsibilities. Other programs operate on a synchronous schedule with set class times when all students log in together for live instruction, similar to traditional classroom learning but conducted via video conferencing.

Program length typically ranges from 12 to 24 months, depending on whether you attend full-time or part-time. Full-time programs often take 12-18 months, while part-time options may extend to 24 months or longer. Some schools offer accelerated programs that compress the content into shorter timeframes with intensive coursework. The clinical component usually cannot be completed online and requires attending in-person rotations, often spanning several weeks throughout the program.

Prerequisites for online LPN programs generally include a high school diploma or GED and may require completion of basic prerequisite courses such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry. Some programs require these courses before enrollment, while others offer remedial or developmental courses for students who need to strengthen their foundation. Many programs also require current CPR certification and background checks.

Program costs vary considerably. According to data from the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Services, LPN program tuition ranges from approximately $5,000 to $20,000 depending on whether the program is at a public community college, private vocational school, or university-based program. Financial aid options including federal student loans, grants, and employer tuition assistance may be available through the school's financial aid office.

Practical takeaway: Compare programs based on their format (synchronous vs. asynchronous), length, clinical requirements, location of clinical sites, total cost, and financial aid options. Create a spreadsheet listing several programs with these details to help identify which format and structure best fits your circumstances.

How to Research and Compare Online LPN Programs

Finding legitimate online LPN programs requires checking for proper accreditation first. The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation accredit some LPN programs, but the most important accreditation comes from your state's nursing board and regional accrediting bodies. Before considering any program, verify that it appears on your state's board of nursing website as an accredited program. This information is typically found in the "Education" or "Approved Programs" section of your state nursing board's website.

When researching programs, look for information about program completion rates, NCLEX-PN pass rates, and graduate employment outcomes. Programs are often required to publish this information publicly. A program with a NCLEX-PN pass rate of 85% or higher on the first attempt suggests solid educational quality, though rates vary by program and student population. Graduate employment rates and how quickly graduates find work in nursing positions can indicate the value of the credential in your job market.

Contact programs directly to ask specific questions about their online components. Request information about the technology platform used (common platforms include Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace), whether you need specific computer equipment or software, internet speed requirements, and technical support availability. Ask about the student-to-instructor ratio in online courses and how often you'll interact with instructors versus automated learning systems.

Review the clinical placement process. Ask where clinical rotations occur, whether the school arranges placements or if students must find their own sites, typical commute distances, and whether clinical sites offer evening or weekend shifts. Some students may need to relocate temporarily for clinical portions of their program. Understanding this requirement ahead of time prevents surprises later.

Check the program's policies on transferability of credits if you already have college coursework completed. Ask about prerequisite requirements, remedial course options for students who need additional preparation, and whether the program accepts prior learning assessments or challenge exams for students with healthcare experience.

Read reviews from current and former students on education forums, the school's social media pages, and review sites, though recognize that reviews often come from extremely satisfied or unsatisfied students and may not represent the typical experience. Contact the school's career services department to speak with recent graduates about their actual experiences in the program and job market afterward.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist of your priorities (schedule flexibility, cost, location, program length) and use it to systematically evaluate 3-5 programs. Request information packets or attend information sessions (many schools offer free virtual information sessions) to compare your options thoroughly before making a decision.

Costs, Financial Aid Options, and Budgeting for Online LPN Education

The total cost of an online LPN program includes tuition, fees, textbooks, supplies, equipment, and clinical-related expenses. Tuition represents the largest component but is not the only cost to consider. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median cost of vocational nursing education programs is approximately $10,000 to $15,000, though individual program costs range significantly. Public community college programs typically cost less than private institutions, often ranging from $5,000 to $12,000 for the entire program, while private vocational schools may charge $12,000 to $25,000 or more.

Beyond tuition, budget for textbooks and course materials, which typically cost $800 to $2,000 depending on the program length and number of courses. Many programs now use digital textbooks and materials, which may be cheaper than printed versions but require valid access codes. Some programs include textbooks in the overall tuition cost, so clarify what is or isn't covered when comparing prices.

Clinical-related expenses include uniforms, shoes, stethoscope and other medical equipment, background checks, drug screening tests, physical examinations, and vaccinations. Expect to spend $300 to $800 on these items. If your clinical sites are located outside your immediate area, budget for transportation, parking, or temporary housing during intensive clinical rotations. Some programs require students to purchase their own liability insurance, which costs around $200 to $500 for the program duration.

Technology requirements may include a
