What BMV Connect Kiosks Are and How They Work

BMV Connect Kiosks are self-service machines operated by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). These kiosks are physical stations located at various BMV branch offices and some partnering locations throughout Indiana. They function as automated terminals that allow people to complete certain vehicle and driver-related transactions without waiting for an agent or scheduling an appointment.

The kiosks operate using touch-screen technology similar to ATMs or airport check-in machines. A person approaches the kiosk, selects their desired transaction from the menu, and follows on-screen instructions to complete their task. The machines accept various forms of identification and can process payments through multiple methods. BMV Connect Kiosks run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at most locations, meaning transactions can occur outside traditional BMV office hours.

Indiana introduced these kiosks as part of a modernization effort to reduce wait times at BMV offices and provide more convenient service options. According to the Indiana BMV, kiosks have processed over 2 million transactions since their initial deployment. The machines handle routine, straightforward transactions that don't require special circumstances or agent judgment.

The technology behind BMV Connect Kiosks connects directly to Indiana's BMV database systems. This connection means information entered at a kiosk immediately updates official records. For example, if someone completes a vehicle registration renewal at a kiosk, their registration is active within moments. The system includes security features to protect personal information and prevent fraud.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that BMV Connect Kiosks are automated machines available around the clock helps you decide when and where to use them. They're best suited for straightforward transactions you can handle independently, not complex situations requiring explanation or assistance from a BMV representative.

Types of Transactions Available at BMV Connect Kiosks

BMV Connect Kiosks handle a variety of common vehicle and driver transactions. The most frequently used transaction is vehicle registration renewal. Indiana residents can renew vehicle registrations through the kiosk as long as their vehicle information hasn't changed, they haven't received any BMV notices, and they're not renewing for the first time. The process involves entering your license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), or driver's license number, then paying the renewal fee.

Driver license renewal is another major transaction category available through kiosks. Indiana drivers can renew their licenses at kiosks if they're not changing their address, don't need to update their photo, and haven't experienced any license suspensions or restrictions. Kiosks in this case verify your identity through existing BMV records and process the renewal fee. Most Indiana driver licenses expire every five years, so this is a transaction many residents use regularly.

Additional transactions that kiosks can handle include:

• Vehicle title transfers between family members
• Address changes on vehicle registrations
• Duplicate license plate requests
• Vehicle registration late fee payments
• Duplicate registration card requests
• Temporary permit applications for vehicles in transition
• Payment of BMV-related fines or penalties

The specific transactions available may vary slightly depending on the kiosk's location and version. Some kiosks in newer BMV offices offer more transaction types than older installations. The kiosk's main menu displays which transactions that particular machine can handle. If you're unsure whether a kiosk offers a specific service, you can visit the Indiana BMV website or call your local BMV office to confirm.

Practical Takeaway: Before heading to a kiosk, determine whether your specific transaction is a routine one that doesn't involve address changes, photo updates, or legal complications. If your situation is straightforward and matches the transaction types listed above, a kiosk can save you significant time compared to waiting in line at a BMV office.

Finding BMV Connect Kiosks Near You

Indiana has deployed BMV Connect Kiosks across the state at multiple locations to provide geographic accessibility. The map displays exact addresses, hours of operation, and sometimes photos of the kiosk locations.

Most kiosks are located inside BMV branch offices during business hours, but many are also accessible in lobbies or entryways 24 hours per day. Some partnering locations also host kiosks, including certain libraries, municipal buildings, and government centers. Not all Indiana counties have kiosks, particularly in rural areas with smaller populations, so checking the official location list before traveling is important.

When searching for a kiosk location, consider these factors:

• Distance from your home or workplace
• Whether the location is accessible outside regular BMV office hours
• Parking availability at the location
• Whether the kiosk offers your specific transaction type
• Population density in your area (rural areas may have fewer locations)

Urban centers like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, and South Bend typically have multiple kiosk locations. Indianapolis alone has over a dozen kiosks across various BMV branch offices and partner locations. Indiana has deployed approximately 150 kiosks statewide as of recent counts, though this number continues to grow as the BMV expands the program.

The Indiana BMV website is the authoritative source for current kiosk locations. The website URL is www.bmv.in.gov, and the kiosk locator is prominently featured on the homepage. You can also call your local BMV branch office directly to confirm whether they have a kiosk and what transactions it handles. Having the correct location information before visiting prevents wasted trips.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the official Indiana BMV website and use their kiosk locator tool before your visit. Write down the address, hours, and available transactions for your nearest kiosk so you arrive prepared and confident that your transaction can be completed.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using a BMV Connect Kiosk

Using a BMV Connect Kiosk follows a straightforward process, though specific steps vary depending on your transaction type. Start by approaching the kiosk and looking for the power-on button or touch the screen to activate it. The kiosk will display a welcome screen with language options. Select your preferred language, typically English or Spanish.

Next, the kiosk will display a main menu with available transactions. Read through the options and select the transaction you want to complete. For example, if renewing your vehicle registration, you would select "Vehicle Registration Renewal" from the menu. The kiosk will then explain the requirements for that transaction and ask you to confirm that your situation meets all the criteria.

The kiosk will request specific information depending on your transaction:

• For vehicle transactions: license plate number, VIN, or registration card information
• For driver license transactions: driver license number or last four digits of your Social Security number
• For title or ownership changes: documentation numbers or identification details
• For address changes: your current address and new address information

After entering information, the kiosk verifies it against BMV records. You'll see a confirmation screen showing the details the kiosk found. Review this information carefully to ensure it's correct. If information is incorrect, the kiosk may not be able to complete your transaction and will direct you to visit a BMV office with staff who can help resolve discrepancies.

Once information is verified, the kiosk displays the transaction fees and processing costs. Review the total amount and confirm the transaction will proceed. The kiosk accepts payment through multiple methods including credit cards, debit cards, and sometimes cash or checks depending on the specific kiosk model. After payment is processed successfully, the kiosk prints your confirmation receipt and any documents you need, such as registration cards or license renewals.

Keep your receipt for your records. The kiosk receipt serves as proof of your transaction. If you requested a physical document like a registration card, it may print immediately or be mailed to
