Understanding Enterprise Rent-A-Car as an Employer

Enterprise Rent-A-Car stands as one of the largest car rental companies in North America, operating thousands of locations across the United States, Canada, and other countries. The company was founded in 1957 and has grown to employ over 70,000 people worldwide. Unlike some competitors that focus primarily on airport locations, Enterprise operates a network of neighborhood branches in cities and towns, which creates different employment opportunities than you might find at other rental companies.

Enterprise is a privately held company owned by the Taylor family through Berkshire Hathaway. This structure means the company operates differently than publicly traded competitors. The organization runs three main brands: Enterprise Rent-A-Car (the largest), National Car Rental, and Alamo Rent A Car. Many employees work across these brands, and advancement often involves experience with multiple brands within the same corporate structure.

The company operates on a location-based model, meaning most jobs are tied to specific rental branches rather than a central corporate office. The vast majority of Enterprise employees work in customer-facing roles at branch locations. This differs from corporate positions, which represent a smaller portion of available jobs. Understanding this structure helps job seekers identify which positions and locations might match their interests and location preferences.

Enterprise's business model also creates seasonal employment patterns. Summer months and holiday periods see higher demand for rental cars, which can affect hiring and scheduling. Spring break, summer vacations, and holiday seasons drive up customer volume, meaning branch locations often need additional staff during these times.

Practical takeaway: Research your local Enterprise locations and understand that most jobs involve direct customer interaction at branch offices rather than remote or corporate positions.

Types of Positions Available at Enterprise

Enterprise offers several different job categories, each with different responsibilities and requirements. Understanding the types of positions available helps you target roles that match your skills and career goals. The primary job categories include entry-level customer service positions, management trainee roles, and corporate positions, though the vast majority of hiring focuses on customer-facing branch work.

Entry-level positions at Enterprise typically include Rental Agent roles and Customer Service Representative positions. Rental Agents help customers select vehicles, process rental agreements, explain insurance options, and handle the check-out and check-in process. These positions require strong communication skills, attention to detail with paperwork, and ability to work with computer systems. Most Rental Agent positions do not require previous car rental experience—Enterprise provides training on their rental systems and procedures. These roles typically start at minimum wage or slightly above, depending on location and local market conditions, with potential for raises based on performance.

Management Trainee programs represent the pathway to supervisory and management positions. Trainees work alongside current managers to learn operations, staff supervision, financial management, and customer service standards. These programs typically last several months and include both classroom training and on-the-job experience. Management Trainees earn more than entry-level agents and receive benefits including health insurance, retirement contributions, and professional development. Many Enterprise managers started as Rental Agents and progressed through the Management Trainee program.

Corporate and support positions exist at regional and national headquarters. These roles include human resources, accounting, marketing, fleet management, and information technology positions. Corporate jobs typically require specific education or experience in those fields and are based in office environments rather than rental locations. These positions generally offer higher compensation than branch roles and include standard corporate benefits.

Specialized positions also exist in fleet maintenance, transportation, and corporate training. Fleet maintenance positions involve vehicle repair and upkeep and typically require mechanical knowledge or certifications. Transportation roles involve moving vehicles between locations and managing logistics.

Practical takeaway: Most Enterprise jobs are entry-level Rental Agent positions at branch locations, but the company also offers management development programs and corporate careers for those seeking advancement or specialized roles.

Requirements and Qualifications for Enterprise Employment

Enterprise has specific requirements that potential employees must meet to be considered for positions. These requirements vary somewhat by position level and location, but certain standards apply across most roles. Understanding these requirements helps you determine whether you meet the basic criteria before pursuing opportunities.

The primary requirement for entry-level positions is that applicants must be at least 18 years old. This age requirement is non-negotiable and applies to virtually all customer-facing and operational roles. Some positions, particularly those involving driving company vehicles, may have higher age requirements. For positions involving vehicle transportation or fleet operations, applicants often must be at least 21 years old due to insurance and liability considerations.

A valid driver's license is required for virtually all Enterprise positions, including those that don't directly involve driving rental cars. Enterprise performs driver license checks as part of their background screening process. Applicants must have a clean driving record—multiple moving violations, DUIs, or accidents can result in disqualification. The specific standards for driving records vary by position and location. Rental Agent positions may have slightly more lenient standards than positions involving company vehicle operation, but any serious violations are typically disqualifying.

For entry-level Rental Agent positions, high school completion or a GED is standard but not always strictly required for all locations. The focus is more on customer service ability, communication skills, and reliability. However, management positions and corporate roles typically require specific education levels—often an associate or bachelor's degree depending on the position. Bilingual skills (particularly English and Spanish) are valuable at many Enterprise locations and can improve hiring prospects in certain areas.

A background check is standard for all Enterprise positions. The company checks criminal history, driving records, and employment history. Most positions do not disqualify applicants for minor or old infractions, but the company evaluates each case individually. Felony convictions, particularly those involving theft or violence, are typically disqualifying. The background check process usually takes one to two weeks.

Reliability and availability are unwritten but crucial requirements. Rental locations operate on specific schedules, and Enterprise prioritizes employees who can work consistently. Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays—particularly during busy seasons—is important for branch positions. Enterprise uses scheduling systems that require employees to be available during assigned time slots.

Practical takeaway: You need to be at least 18 with a valid driver's license and clean driving record to pursue entry-level positions; management and corporate roles require specific education, while all positions require passing a background check.

The Hiring Process and What to Expect

Enterprise's hiring process typically involves several stages, though the exact process may vary slightly by location and position level. Understanding what to expect helps you prepare and present yourself effectively. The process generally takes one to three weeks from initial contact to job offer.

The first stage is usually an online application through Enterprise's career website or job portal. The application asks for basic information including work history, education, driving history, and personal references. Some locations also use third-party job boards where Enterprise positions are posted. The online application often includes preliminary screening questions about availability, location preferences, and willingness to relocate. This stage is important because applications are reviewed by recruiters or hiring managers who decide whether to move candidates forward.

If your application is reviewed favorably, you may receive a phone call or email inviting you to an interview. Phone screenings sometimes occur before in-person interviews, particularly for entry-level positions. These brief calls (10-15 minutes) confirm basic information and assess communication skills. Be prepared to discuss your availability, why you're interested in working for Enterprise, and any relevant customer service experience.

The in-person interview typically takes place at a local Enterprise branch with the branch manager or assistant manager. For entry-level Rental Agent positions, interviews are usually fairly casual and conversational. Managers are primarily assessing whether you have good customer service skills, reliability, and a positive attitude. They may ask about past customer service experiences, how you handle difficult situations, and why you're interested in the position. Some branches use panel interviews with multiple managers present, while others conduct individual interviews.

After the interview, Enterprise conducts a background check and driving record review. This is when your driving history is verified and a criminal background check is performed. If these checks come back clear and the interviewer wants to move forward, you receive a job offer. The offer typically comes via phone or email and includes information about the position, start date, and basic compensation details.

Before your first day, you'll complete paperwork including tax forms (W-4, I-9), direct deposit information, and emergency contacts. Some locations require new hires to attend orientation sessions covering company policies, safety procedures, and initial training on rental systems.
