Understanding California State Disability Insurance (SDI)

California State Disability Insurance, commonly called SDI, is a program run by the California Employment Development Department (EDD). This program provides partial wage replacement to workers who cannot work due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or condition. The program has been operating since 1946 and covers millions of California residents.

SDI is funded through payroll deductions from employees' wages. Workers in California contribute a small percentage of their earnings to the SDI fund. In 2024, the employee contribution rate is approximately 1% of wages, with a maximum weekly earnings cap. Self-employed individuals may also participate in SDI on a voluntary basis.

The program typically replaces between 55% and 66% of a worker's average weekly wage, depending on their earnings level. The minimum weekly benefit in 2024 is $50, and the maximum is $1,450 per week. Benefits generally last up to four weeks, though in some circumstances they may extend to eight weeks within a 12-month period.

SDI differs from workers' compensation, which covers work-related injuries. SDI covers conditions that arise outside of work. This includes pregnancies, surgeries, serious illnesses like cancer or heart conditions, and temporary disabilities that prevent someone from performing their regular job duties.

Many California workers don't realize they have already paid into SDI through their paychecks. Understanding how this program works and what information exists about it can help workers understand their options if they face a temporary disability. A guide about SDI login processes and account management can help workers learn about this resource they have already contributed to.

Practical Takeaway: SDI is a wage replacement program funded by mandatory employee contributions. Learning about how to access your SDI account information is the first step toward understanding what resources may be available to you during a temporary disability.

"Approved" means you have been determined to be temporarily disabled and benefits have been authorized.
