Atlanta's homeless services landscape includes multiple organizations, both government-run and nonprofit, that provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, and support services. Emergency Shelters in Atlanta: What They Provide

Emergency shelters provide temporary housing for people facing homelessness on a night-to-night basis. Unlike other types of housing assistance, emergency shelters are designed for immediate need and typically do not require advance planning or lengthy intake processes. Atlanta has several emergency shelter options operated by different organizations, each with slightly different policies and services.

Most emergency shelters in Atlanta provide a bed, meals, and basic facilities like bathrooms and showers. Many also offer case management services, which means staff members work with residents to connect them to longer-term housing options, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, or job training programs. Some shelters specialize in serving specific populations, such as families with children, single men, single women, or people with particular needs.

The Gateway Center Atlanta, one of the largest shelter providers in the city, operates multiple facilities. Their programs include emergency shelter beds, transitional housing, and supportive services. The organization reports serving thousands of people annually across its various programs. Similarly, the Atlanta Mission provides emergency shelter along with meals and support services. The Community Outreach Centers operated by the City of Atlanta provide additional emergency shelter capacity.

Emergency shelters typically operate on a first-come, first-served basis during peak demand times, though many now use low-barrier approaches that reduce restrictions on entry. This means they may accept people without requiring extensive paperwork or background checks. However, shelters do maintain basic safety policies, which may include restrictions on weapons, drugs, or threatening behavior.

Services vary by location. Some shelters operate year-round, while others may expand capacity during winter months. Many shelters provide services beyond just a bed—these might include meals, shower facilities, laundry services, storage for personal belongings, and connections to case managers who can discuss longer-term housing plans.

Practical Takeaway: When contacting an emergency shelter, ask specifically about their current capacity, any requirements for entry, what meals they provide, and what support services their case managers can offer. Having this information will help you understand what to expect.

Transitional Housing Programs and Extended Stay Options

Transitional housing programs differ from emergency shelters in that they provide housing for longer periods—typically from several months to two years. These programs are designed for people who need time to address barriers to permanent housing, such as mental health conditions, substance abuse issues, job loss, or lack of family support. During their stay, residents typically work with case managers on goals like employment, mental health treatment, or rebuilding family connections.

Many transitional housing programs in Atlanta operate through nonprofit organizations. These programs often have more structure than emergency shelters, including requirements around program participation, curfews, and in some cases, mandatory treatment participation. However, this structure is intended to support residents in making progress toward independence and permanent housing.

The length of stay in transitional housing varies. Some programs operate on a three to six-month model for people who need help getting back on their feet quickly, while others provide year-long or longer placements for people addressing more complex issues like chronic homelessness or serious mental illness. According to data from the Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness, approximately 1,200 people per year move through transitional housing programs in the Atlanta area.

Services typically provided in transitional housing include:

• Housing in shared or individual units
• Case management and counseling
• Job training and employment assistance
• Mental health and substance abuse treatment coordination
• Financial literacy and budgeting classes
• Life skills training
• Help planning the transition to permanent housing

One example is the Transitional Housing Program offered through Gateway Center, which provides residents with their own rooms, access to bathrooms and kitchen facilities, and dedicated case management. Residents typically spend four to six months in the program while working toward employment and stable housing arrangements.

Not all transitional programs are identical. Some are abstinence-based, meaning residents must not use alcohol or drugs while participating. Others use harm-reduction approaches, meaning they do not require abstinence but do require residents to engage in treatment or supportive services. Understanding a program's philosophy and requirements before contacting them will help you determine if it might meet your needs.

Practical Takeaway: If you are looking for longer-term housing support rather than just a bed for the night, ask shelter staff or service providers about transitional housing options. When contacting programs, clarify how long residents typically stay and what services are provided as part of the program.

Finding Shelter Information: Phone Numbers and Contact Methods

Locating accurate, current information about Atlanta-area shelters requires knowing where to call and what to ask. Several organizations maintain databases and hotlines that can connect people to shelter services. These resources exist specifically to help people find housing information quickly.

The City of Atlanta's Department of Human Services maintains information about municipal shelter facilities and can provide information about current capacity and services. The Gateway Center Atlanta operates a centralized intake system that helps connect people to various shelter and housing programs. Many shelter organizations use phone systems where staff can answer questions about services, current availability, and how to access programs.

When contacting shelters or shelter-related services, be prepared to provide basic information such as:

• Your name
• Your age and household composition (whether you have children or are traveling with others)
• Any special needs or circumstances (medical conditions, disabilities, mental health needs)
• Whether you have pets and need pet-friendly housing
• Whether you have documentation like identification or Social Security card

Having this information ready when you call will make conversations more efficient. However, most shelters are trained to work with people even if they do not have complete documentation or clear answers to all questions.

Beyond direct shelter numbers, 211 is a national helpline service that operates in the Atlanta area. By dialing 211 or visiting 211.org, you can receive information about social services, including shelter resources, food assistance, healthcare, and other supports. The service is free and available 24 hours a day. Staff who answer can provide information about shelters near specific locations in Atlanta and explain what different programs offer.

Online resources including Homeless.org and Shelter.com maintain databases of Atlanta-area shelters that you can search by neighborhood or type of service. While not all information on these sites is real-time, they provide useful starting points for understanding what shelter options exist in different parts of the city.

The Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness publishes information about homeless services available in the area. Local libraries often have current resource guides in paper form, and many nonprofits provide printed guides at their facilities.
