This resource focuses on explaining existing game mechanics rather than providing strategies for competitive play or guaranteed results in gameplay. The guide breaks down different multiplayer options available to players on the Nintendo Switch platform. It covers both online and local play features, explaining how each method works and what players should know before attempting connections.

The information in the guide reflects features that are currently built into Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo has maintained these core social features since launch, with occasional updates to improve stability and user experience. The guide organizes this information in a way that helps players of all experience levels understand their options for connecting with friends.

Players may find this guide useful whether they are new to Animal Crossing or returning players unfamiliar with the multiplayer systems. The resource presents factual descriptions of how features work, what players need to use them, and what to expect when connecting with others. This straightforward approach helps players make informed decisions about which social features they want to explore.

Practical Takeaway: Before diving into multiplayer play, understanding what features are available and how they work helps you determine which connection methods suit your needs and gaming setup.

Local Play and Same-Console Multiplayer Options

Local play in Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows multiple players to enjoy the game together on a single Nintendo Switch console. This feature supports up to four players on one island, with each player maintaining their own character and home. Local play does not require an internet connection, making it a straightforward way for household members or nearby friends to play together.

To use local play, you need multiple Joy-Con controllers or additional Nintendo Switch controllers connected to a single console. Each player creates or uses an existing profile on that Switch system. The game recognizes multiple controllers and allows different players to join the island in turn-based fashion, taking turns as the active player while others watch from the sidelines.

One important characteristic of local play is that all players share the same island. This means decisions about island layout, villager placement, and island name affect all players on that console. Players can gather resources together, work on projects collaboratively, and generally share the same island progression. The game limits customization options when multiple players live on the same island compared to single-player experiences.

Local play sessions can last as long as your gaming session—there are no time restrictions within a single play period. Players can switch between characters, and the game saves automatically throughout play. If you're playing with people in your home or at a friend's house with everyone gathered around one TV, local play provides an immediate, connection-free way to enjoy the game together.

The local play feature has remained stable since launch with no major changes. This reliability makes it a consistent option for households with multiple Nintendo Switch controllers. The experience is straightforward once controllers are set up and profiles are ready.

Practical Takeaway: Local play works best for co-located players who want to share an island and have extra controllers available; it requires no online subscription or internet connection.

Online Play Through Nintendo Switch Online

Online multiplayer in Animal Crossing: New Horizons requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which is a paid service offered by Nintendo. This subscription provides internet connectivity features across your Switch library, not just Animal Crossing. Basic Nintendo Switch Online memberships cost approximately $20 per year or $4 per month as of 2024, though pricing may vary by region.

With an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can visit other players' islands or invite up to four players to visit your island. Unlike local play, online visitors come to your island individually, and you can communicate with them through the game's chat features or voice chat with a headset. Visitors can gather items, fish, catch bugs, and explore your island layout while they're present.

The online system uses friend codes or the in-game friend list to establish connections. If you and another player are friends on your Nintendo Switch accounts, you can initiate visits directly. You can also use a Dodo Code, which is a temporary access code that lets anyone with the code visit your island for a limited time. This feature made it easy during the 2020 pandemic period when many players sought connection through gaming.

Online play sessions have time limits depending on your activity. If no one interacts for several minutes, the connection may disconnect. The visiting player returns to their own island when the visit ends. Any items they pick up or changes they make do not affect your island permanently—your island reverts to its saved state after they leave.

Nintendo's online infrastructure has expanded since New Horizons launched. The service now includes cloud saves for certain games, access to classic NES and SNES titles through the subscription, and voice chat capabilities. The reliability of online connections has generally improved through updates and server maintenance.

Practical Takeaway: Online play through Nintendo Switch Online lets you visit distant friends' islands or host visitors through Dodo Codes; it requires a subscription but allows flexible, real-time social connection.

Communication Features and Social Tools

Animal Crossing: New Horizons includes built-in communication systems that help you stay in touch with other players. The game offers basic text chat through the in-game menu, which uses a simplified interface for typing messages. This feature works during visits when you're on another player's island or when someone is visiting yours. The text chat appears in a message box that other players can read in real-time.

Voice chat requires a compatible headset or microphone connected to your Nintendo Switch. Some players use the Nintendo Switch Online app on their phones to enable voice communication, which provides another communication channel during gameplay. Voice chat can make coordination easier when working on projects together or simply enjoying casual conversation while playing.

The game also has a bulletin board feature that works across your friend list. Players can post messages, notices, or announcements that friends can see when they visit your island. This asynchronous communication method—where people read messages at different times—allows coordination without requiring everyone to be online simultaneously.

Nook Phone messaging offers another layer of communication. Players can send each other messages through the Nook Phone, a in-game device, though this feature has limitations on length and frequency. These messages appear in your inbox for reading later, making it another way to connect when you're not actively playing together.

It's important to understand that Animal Crossing's communication features are relatively basic compared to other online games. There is no friend recommendation system, no in-game video calling, and no text-to-speech automation. Communication depends on players taking initiative to message each other, exchange friend codes, and arrange visits.

Practical Takeaway: Multiple communication methods exist in-game, from text chat to voice options; combining these tools helps coordinate visits and maintain friendships across gaming sessions.

Finding and Connecting With Other Players

Finding other Animal Crossing players to befriend requires taking some action outside the game itself, as Animal Crossing does not have built-in matchmaking or a server browser. Many players connect through social media platforms, Discord communities, or dedicated Animal Crossing forums where players share friend codes and Dodo Codes. Reddit communities like r/BuddyCrossing have thousands of active members posting messages to connect with others.

Friend codes are 12-digit codes unique to each Nintendo Switch profile. You can find your friend code in the user settings on your Switch console. Sharing your code through Discord, Reddit, or messaging apps allows others to add you as a friend through their Switch. Once confirmed, you appear on each other's friend lists, making future visits easier to coordinate.

Dodo Codes provide temporary access without requiring a long-term friend connection. These codes last about eight hours and can be shared with anyone, making them useful for short-term visits or meeting new players. You generate a Dodo Code through the airport terminal on your island. Players who have the code can visit your island without being your permanent friend.

Several community websites compile lists of players looking for friends or offering their islands for visits. Turnip exchange websites, for example, connect players who want to trade turnips by sharing Dodo Codes. Other
