What Are Truck Load Boards and How Do They Work

Truck load boards are online platforms where shippers post freight that needs to be transported and truck drivers or trucking companies can view and accept those jobs. They function as a digital marketplace connecting people who have goods to move with people who have trucks available to move them. Load boards operate 24 hours a day, and new freight postings appear constantly throughout each day and night.

The basic process works like this: A shipper or logistics company enters information about their freight into the load board system. This includes details such as the pickup location, delivery location, type of cargo, weight, dimensions, special handling requirements, and the payment amount offered for the job. Truck drivers or fleet managers then browse through available loads and choose the ones that work for their routes, schedules, and cargo capacity.

Most load boards organize freight by region, truck type needed, and cargo category to make searching easier. A driver in the Midwest looking for loads heading south can filter to see only those routes. A refrigerated truck driver can search specifically for refrigerated freight. This filtering system saves time by showing only relevant opportunities rather than every load posted across the entire country.

Payment for loads typically happens in one of several ways. Some shippers pay drivers directly when the load is picked up or delivered. Others use the load board platform to process payments electronically. Some freight brokers hold payment temporarily and then distribute it to drivers after delivery confirmation. Understanding these payment methods matters because timing affects a driver's cash flow and business planning.

The freight types on load boards vary widely. You'll find loads for consumer goods, raw materials, construction equipment, produce, packaged foods, automotive parts, and hundreds of other product categories. Some loads require special equipment like flatbeds, tankers, or refrigerated trailers. Others work with standard dry vans. This variety means load boards serve drivers with different truck types and specializations.

Practical Takeaway: Before using any load board, understand that these platforms are search and matching tools. They show what freight is available, but the driver or company must make all decisions about which loads to accept, negotiate terms directly with shippers or brokers, and handle all business logistics independently.

Major Free and Low-Cost Load Board Options

Several load boards offer free or partially free access to freight postings. These platforms vary in their features, user base, and coverage areas. Some boards focus on specific regions, while others operate nationally. Some specialize in certain cargo types, and others accept all freight categories.

DAT is one of the largest load boards in North America. While DAT offers premium paid subscriptions with advanced features, they provide a basic free version that shows available loads. The free version displays load postings with less detail than paid accounts and may have limitations on how many loads you can view per day. Drivers can see pickup and delivery locations, cargo type, and pay rates on the free version. The paid versions offer additional tools like load tracking, market rates analysis, and customer information.

Freightos is another platform offering load matching. While primarily known as a freight rate intelligence tool, Freightos connects shippers with carriers through their platform. Parts of their service require subscription, but they offer educational information and some load viewing at no cost. They focus on freight rate transparency and help shippers and carriers understand market pricing.

123Loadboard provides load postings across different regions. Their interface allows drivers to search loads by pickup and delivery points, with no subscription required for basic searches. Drivers can view load details including weight, dimensions, commodity type, and pay amount. Communication between drivers and shippers happens through the platform.

Facebook groups and Craigslist also function as informal load boards where small trucking companies and independent drivers post available loads. While less formal than dedicated load board platforms, these sources sometimes have local freight opportunities. The trade-off is less verification and potentially higher risk of fraudulent postings. Users need to exercise caution and verify information before committing to any load posted on these open platforms.

Uber Freight and Amazon Logistics are newer players that combine app-based technology with freight matching. Uber Freight launched in 2017 and allows drivers to search for loads through a mobile app. Amazon launched Amazon Relay to connect drivers with Amazon freight. Both require registration and operate nationally, though availability varies by region.

Practical Takeaway: Research which load boards operate in your primary service area and which cargo types they emphasize. Free versions of load boards typically show fewer details and update less frequently than paid versions, so comparing what information each board provides helps you decide which ones fit your needs.

Understanding Load Board Information and Freight Details

When viewing loads on a board, specific information tells you whether a load matches your truck, schedule, and business needs. Learning to read load postings accurately prevents time wasted on unsuitable freight and helps you make informed decisions about which loads to pursue.

Every load posting contains essential details. The pickup location shows where you'll collect the freight, usually listed as a city and state or sometimes a specific address. The delivery location shows the destination. Both of these determine your route, driving time, and fuel costs. The distance between pickup and delivery directly affects whether a load makes financial sense for your business. A 200-mile load pays very differently than an 800-mile load, even if the pay rate looks similar.

The cargo type and weight tell you whether your truck can handle the load safely and legally. A load listed as "15,000 lbs of automotive parts" fits different truck configurations than "40,000 lbs of steel coils" or "22 pallets of mixed retail goods." Some loads require specialized equipment. A load of refrigerated produce won't work for a driver with a dry van, regardless of payment offered. Temperature-controlled freight, hazardous materials, and heavy equipment each have specific requirements that your truck and licensing must meet.

Dimensions matter for determining whether cargo fits in your trailer. A posting might say "8 pallets, 48x40 each, 6 feet tall." Comparing these dimensions to your available space prevents accepting loads that physically won't fit. Some freight requires hand-loading or unloading, which affects timing and labor costs. Other loads use automated equipment at the facility, so you just hook and go.

Pay rates on load boards are typically listed as a flat rate for the entire load. A posting might say "$1,500 for pickup in Dallas, delivery in Atlanta" rather than a per-mile rate. Understanding the total distance and dividing the pay by miles driven shows your actual earnings per mile. Pay rates fluctuate based on freight type, urgency, distance, and market conditions. During peak shipping seasons, rates increase. During slow seasons, they decrease. Comparing pay rates across different loads helps you identify which opportunities make sense financially.

Additional details on postings include pickup and delivery dates, special handling instructions, customer contact information, and sometimes customer rating or feedback. Pickup dates might show a specific window like "pickup between August 10-12" or "no earlier than Monday." Delivery dates work similarly. These timeframes affect whether a load fits your schedule or conflicts with other commitments.

Practical Takeaway: Before contacting anyone about a load, calculate the actual pay per mile, confirm your truck and equipment can handle the cargo specifications, and verify the timeline matches your availability. This prevents miscommunication and ensures you only pursue loads that work for your operation.

Safety and Verification When Using Load Boards

Using load boards carries certain risks that drivers and trucking companies should understand. The decentralized nature of these platforms means anyone can post loads, including fraudulent actors seeking to exploit drivers. Taking steps to verify loads and protect yourself financially reduces the likelihood of being scammed or delivering freight for someone who won't pay.

Freight fraud occurs when someone posts a load on a load board with no intention of paying the driver or when payment is made with fraudulent methods. Drivers may discover the problem only after completing the delivery. Some scams involve posting loads at artificially high pay rates to attract drivers, but using fake payment methods or disappearing before payment occurs. Other scams request upfront payment from drivers for "securing" a load or covering "documentation fees." Legitimate freight transactions do not require drivers to pay money upfront to haul a load.

Several verification steps reduce fraud risk. Research the shipper or broker before accepting a load. Ask other drivers in load board forums or Facebook groups if they've worked with this shipper before. Check the shipper's business registration through your state's business database. Legitimate shippers typically have verifiable business information, a physical address, and a phone number you can call
