Understanding Story Structure and the Three-Act Framework

Every movie tells a story, and most successful screenplays follow a basic three-act structure that audiences have learned to expect over decades of filmmaking. This structure divides your narrative into three main sections: the setup, the confrontation, and the resolution. Understanding how these pieces fit together forms the foundation of script writing.

In the first act, you introduce your main character, called the protagonist, and establish the world they live in. This section typically takes up about 25 percent of your screenplay. During this time, you show what the character's normal life looks like before something changes. For example, in the 1994 film "The Shawshank Redemption," the first act shows Andy Dufresne as a banker who is convicted of murder and enters prison. The audience learns who he is and what he values before his main journey begins.

The second act, making up roughly 50 percent of your screenplay, is where your protagonist faces obstacles and conflicts. This is the longest section and where most of your story happens. Your character tries to reach their goal but encounters problems. In "The Shawshank Redemption," Andy spends years in prison, forms relationships, and works toward his ultimate goal of escape. This act contains multiple smaller conflicts that build toward a climactic moment.

The third act, comprising the final 25 percent, shows how your story concludes. This section reveals whether your character achieves their goal and what they've learned along the way. The resolution doesn't always mean a happy ending—it means the story reaches its conclusion and the audience understands the outcome.

Research shows that screenplays typically run 90 to 120 pages, with each page roughly equaling one minute of screen time. This means your first act might span 22 to 30 pages, your second act 45 to 60 pages, and your third act 22 to 30 pages. These proportions help maintain audience engagement and pacing throughout your film.

Practical takeaway: Before writing, outline your story using the three-act structure. Identify what happens in each act and approximately where major turning points occur. This roadmap prevents you from getting lost midway through your script and helps ensure your story maintains proper pacing and balance.

Developing Characters That Audiences Care About

Characters are the heart of any screenplay. No matter how exciting your plot sounds, audiences connect with movies through the people they follow. Strong characters make viewers care about what happens next, so developing them well is essential to your script's success.

Your main character needs a clear goal—something they want to achieve or obtain by the end of the story. This goal drives the plot forward. However, equally important is your character's motivation, or the deeper reason why they want this goal. For instance, in "Rocky" (1976), Rocky's surface goal is to fight Apollo Creed and earn money, but his deeper motivation is to prove to himself and others that he's not just another person from the neighborhood—that he has value and potential. Understanding both layers makes your character feel real and three-dimensional.

Every strong protagonist also faces an internal conflict alongside the external plot. Internal conflict means your character battles with themselves—their fears, doubts, or beliefs. Rocky fears that people will always see him as a small-time fighter, not a serious athlete. This inner struggle makes audiences root for him because we recognize our own doubts in his character. External conflict is the outside problem your character must solve, while internal conflict is the personal growth they must achieve.

Consider your character's background, personality traits, and what they believe about the world. What experiences shaped them? What do they fear? What makes them laugh? These details might never appear in your script directly, but knowing them helps you write dialogue and actions that feel authentic. A character should speak and act consistently based on who they are.

Your script also needs antagonists—characters who oppose your protagonist. An antagonist doesn't have to be purely evil; they simply have goals that conflict with your main character's goals. In many cases, the best antagonists believe they're right, just as strongly as your protagonist does. This creates genuine conflict rather than simple good-versus-evil storytelling.

Practical takeaway: Write a character profile for your protagonist that includes their age, occupation, biggest fear, deepest desire, core belief about life, and what they want to achieve in your story. Do the same for your main antagonist. These profiles need not be long, but they provide reference points when you're unsure how a character should react in a given scene.

Formatting Your Screenplay Correctly

Screenplay formatting might seem like a technical detail, but it matters significantly in the film industry. Professional formatting makes your script easy to read, shows that you understand the medium, and allows producers, directors, and actors to quickly understand what they're reading. Incorrect formatting can make your work appear amateurish and may cause readers to dismiss it before reaching the actual story.

A screenplay uses specific elements, each formatted consistently. Scene headings, also called sluglines, appear in all capital letters and identify where and when a scene takes place. A typical scene heading looks like this: INT. KITCHEN - MORNING. The "INT." means interior, "EXT." means exterior, followed by the location and time of day. Scene headings help readers navigate your story and production teams understand what locations and times they need to film.

Action lines describe what happens in the scene without dialogue. These lines are written in present tense and use concrete, visual language. Instead of writing "John is angry," you might write "John slams his fist on the table" because viewers can see the action. Action lines should be concise—typically no more than three lines—so readers can quickly visualize what's occurring.

Character names appear in all capital letters, centered above the dialogue they speak. Parentheticals, small notes in parentheses below character names, indicate how dialogue should be delivered—for example, "(angrily)" or "(whispering)". Use parentheticals sparingly since actors prefer to make their own choices about delivery.

Dialogue is what characters say, placed below their names and indented. Dialogue should sound natural and move the story forward. Every line should reveal character or advance the plot; unnecessary chatter slows pacing. Transitions like "CUT TO:" or "FADE TO:" appear at the right margin and indicate how one scene moves to the next.

Industry-standard screenplay format uses 12-point Courier font, one inch margins on all sides, and has the protagonist's name underlined the first time they appear in an action line. Many screenwriting software programs like Final Draft or Celtx handle formatting automatically, which prevents formatting errors and saves time.

Practical takeaway: Study published screenplays from films you admire. Read them like a reader would and notice how professional screenplays are formatted. Many scripts are available online through studio websites or educational databases. Comparing your work to industry-standard examples helps you identify and correct formatting issues before submitting your script to others.

Writing Dialogue That Sounds Natural and Serves Your Story

Dialogue is one of the most challenging aspects of screenwriting because it must accomplish multiple things simultaneously. It must sound like how real people talk while also moving the story forward, revealing character, and entertaining the audience. Real conversations contain many pauses, incomplete thoughts, and irrelevant details that would bore viewers if included in a screenplay.

Good screenplay dialogue is a stylized version of natural speech. It captures how people speak without including everything they say. When you listen to real conversations, you notice people interrupt each other, use filler words like "um" and "like," and often don't complete sentences. In screenwriting, you strip away most of these elements while maintaining the flavor of authentic speech. A character might say "I can't believe you did that" rather than "Um, well, I mean, I just... I can't really, you know, I can't believe that you actually did that thing."

Each character should have a distinct voice—their own unique way of speaking. Age, background, education, and personality all affect how someone speaks. A teenager from the city speaks differently than a retired farmer, and a character who's educated speaks differently than one who isn't. Varying vocabulary, sentence length, and speech patterns between characters makes dialogue feel authentic and helps readers distinguish who's speaking even without character names.

Dialogue should primarily show character and advance plot. Avoid dialogue that simply conveys information the audience doesn't need, known as exposition. Instead of having characters explain
