Free Guide to Walking Oklahoma City's Canal

Overview of Oklahoma City's Canal and Riverwalk System

Oklahoma City's canal system represents one of the most significant urban development projects in the city's history. The Bricktown Canal, completed in 1997, stretches approximately 1.3 miles through the heart of downtown Oklahoma City. This waterway was created as part of a broader revitalization effort for the Bricktown district, transforming what was once an industrial area into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood with restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, and recreational spaces.

The canal system includes the main Bricktown Canal and several connecting waterways that form part of Oklahoma City's larger pedestrian infrastructure network. The water flows from Sheridan Avenue on the north end to the confluence with the North Canadian River on the south end. The canal passes through several distinctive neighborhoods and commercial districts, each offering different experiences and attractions along the walking route.

The construction of the canal involved careful engineering to manage water flow, create recreational spaces, and integrate the waterway with existing infrastructure. Water is pumped into the canal system from the North Canadian River, maintaining appropriate water levels year-round. The canal's design incorporates pedestrian walkways on both sides, making it accessible for walkers of various abilities and fitness levels.

Understanding the canal's layout and purpose helps walkers plan their visits and appreciate the urban design decisions that shaped this public space. The canal serves both functional and recreational purposes, acting as a drainage system while simultaneously functioning as a major attraction that brings residents and visitors downtown. The project demonstrates how cities can reclaim underutilized industrial areas and transform them into community gathering spaces.

Practical Takeaway: Before your first walk, visit the Oklahoma City tourism website or downtown visitor centers to obtain a canal map showing major intersections, attractions, and access points. This preparation allows you to choose walk segments that match your time and energy level.

Starting Points and Access Information

Multiple entry points along the canal system allow walkers to begin their journey from different locations depending on personal preference and convenience. The northern terminus of the main canal begins near Sheridan Avenue and Broadway Extension, though this section is less developed for pedestrian use than other portions. Most walkers prefer starting from more established access points with clear signage, parking, and nearby amenities.

The most popular starting point is at the south end of Bricktown, where the canal meets the North Canadian River near the Riverwalk district. This location offers ample parking at various facilities, restaurants within walking distance, and clear pathways extending in both directions. The Riverwalk area serves as a natural gathering place with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Myriad Botanical Gardens, and Water Taxi services nearby.

Midpoint access is available throughout the canal corridor at regular intervals. The Main Street extension provides a central access point with street-level parking and direct canal access. The Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark area offers another popular entry location, with the Oklahoma City Dodgers stadium drawing visitors who can explore the canal before or after events. The area around the Skirvin Hotel and Colcord Building provides additional downtown access points with nearby parking structures.

Public transportation options include local bus routes operated by METRO (Metropolitan Transit Authority) that serve downtown Oklahoma City. Several bus lines stop near canal access points, making it possible to reach the canal without personal vehicles. Parking information varies by location, with some areas offering free street parking and others charging hourly or daily rates at parking facilities.

Practical Takeaway: If driving, arrive early on weekends or use downtown parking apps to locate available spaces. If using public transit, check METRO's website for current routes and schedules serving your preferred canal entry point.

Walking Routes and Distance Information

The canal system accommodates walks of varying lengths, allowing visitors to choose experiences matching their available time and physical capability. The main Bricktown Canal section spans approximately 1.3 miles in its primary configuration. A round-trip walk covering the entire main canal and back takes roughly 45 minutes to one hour at a moderate pace, not including stops for attractions or dining.

Shorter segments allow for 20 to 30-minute walks. Walking just the southern portion from the Riverwalk area to Main Street provides approximately 0.5 miles of walking and showcases some of the canal's most polished sections with abundant dining and entertainment options. This shorter route works well for visitors with limited time or those visiting with children.

Extended routes connecting to surrounding neighborhoods can stretch walks to two hours or more. The canal system links with the Riverwalk that follows the North Canadian River, extending walking opportunities south and east toward the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Myriad Botanical Gardens. Walkers interested in longer excursions can combine canal walking with exploration of adjacent neighborhoods like Deep Deuce, the Film Row district, or the Warehouse District.

The terrain throughout the canal system is generally flat and well-maintained. The pathways consist of concrete and paved surfaces suitable for standard walking shoes, bicycles, jogging, and wheelchair use. Some sections include stairs or ramps at level changes, and these are clearly marked. The walking surfaces remain consistent throughout seasons, though rain may create temporary wet conditions requiring normal precautions.

Distance measurements along the canal are not marked with mile markers, so walkers may use mobile phone fitness tracking applications or estimate distance based on walking time. Most moderate-paced walkers cover approximately one mile every 15 to 20 minutes on flat terrain.

Practical Takeaway: Plan your walk by selecting a starting point and determining whether you prefer a short exploration (under one mile), a moderate walk (1-2 miles), or an extended journey exploring multiple connected areas. Using a mobile mapping application allows real-time tracking of distance covered and helps you pace your walk accordingly.

Attractions, Restaurants, and Points of Interest

The Bricktown Canal corridor hosts numerous restaurants, entertainment venues, and cultural attractions that enhance the walking experience. The restaurant scene ranges from casual outdoor dining directly overlooking the canal to upscale establishments housed in historic brick buildings. Many restaurants offer waterfront seating where diners can watch canal activity while eating. Entertainment venues line the canal, particularly in the southern sections. The Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark hosts Oklahoma City Dodgers baseball games during the minor league season (April through September), and the surrounding area activates significantly during game days. Concert venues and music clubs operate along the canal corridor, hosting live performances most evenings. Comedy clubs, sports bars, and casual nightlife venues provide options for evening canal visits.

Water Taxi service operates along portions of the canal, providing an alternative to walking for portions of the route. Water Taxis run seasonally (typically spring through fall) and offer both recreational rides and transportation between canal sections. This service allows walkers to experience the canal from the water perspective and reduces walking fatigue for longer visits.

Cultural and historical attractions near the canal include the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, housed in a notable building with distinctive architecture just south of the main canal. The Myriad Botanical Gardens occupy extensive grounds south of the Riverwalk area, featuring themed garden sections, walking paths, and the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. The Oklahoma City National Memorial, located a short walk south of the canal system, provides historical interpretation of significant events in Oklahoma City's history.

Shopping options exist throughout the Bricktown district, with retail stores, galleries, and gift shops interspersed among dining and entertainment venues. The architecture of Bricktown's historic brick buildings offers visual interest for walkers photographing and appreciating the neighborhood's aesthetic character.

Practical Takeaway: Review restaurant and attraction websites before your visit to identify stops matching your interests. Many establishments offer seasonal hours or special events, so confirming current operations ensures you won't arrive to find a venue unexpectedly closed.

Seasonal Conditions and Best Times to Visit

Oklahoma City experiences four distinct seasons, each offering different walking conditions along the canal. Spring (March through May) provides mild temperatures typically ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, making this an ideal season for canal walks. Spring rainfall can cause temporary wet conditions on walkways, and occasional thunderstorms may require walkers to seek shelter. Spring weekends draw large crowds to the canal, particularly as the weather warms and the baseball season begins.
