Free Guide to Vietnam Visa Requirements Before Travel

Understanding Vietnam's Visa System and Entry Requirements

Vietnam requires most foreign visitors to hold a valid visa before entering the country. The Vietnamese government issues several types of visas depending on the purpose and length of your stay. Understanding which visa category applies to your situation is the first step in your travel planning.

Vietnam's visa system has undergone changes over the years. As of 2024, Vietnam offers visa-free entry for citizens of 90 countries for stays up to 90 days, though this policy can change. Citizens of countries not on this list, or those planning to stay longer than the visa-free period, will need to obtain a visa before travel.

The main visa categories include:

• Tourist visas (DL): Designed for leisure travel, typically issued for 30 or 90 days
• Business visas (DN): For business meetings, conferences, and professional activities
• Temporary Residence Cards (TRC): For longer stays, typically 3 to 12 months
• Work visas (LD): For employment in Vietnam, requiring sponsorship from a Vietnamese employer
• Student visas (LS): For individuals attending educational institutions in Vietnam

Each visa type has different validity periods and renewal options. A 30-day tourist visa is single-entry, meaning you can only enter Vietnam once. A 90-day visa may be single or multiple-entry depending on which option you select. Multiple-entry visas allow you to exit and re-enter Vietnam during the visa's validity period without needing a new visa.

The visa validity period refers to the timeframe within which you must enter Vietnam, not how long you can stay. For example, a 30-day visa issued on January 1st must be used by January 30th. Once you enter, you may have additional days to remain in the country depending on the visa type.

Practical takeaway: Identify which visa category matches your travel purpose and determine whether your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry. This determines your next steps and timeline.

Visa-Free Entry: Who Qualifies and What You Should Know

Vietnam allows citizens of 90 countries and territories to enter without a visa for tourism purposes. The visa-free program permits stays of up to 90 days for most eligible nationalities, though the exact length varies. This represents a significant benefit for travelers from these countries and eliminates the need to process visa paperwork before departure.

Countries with visa-free access to Vietnam include most European Union nations, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many others. The complete list is maintained by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Citizens of eligible countries can cross into Vietnam and remain for the permitted period without needing advance authorization.

However, visa-free entry comes with important conditions:

• You must hold a passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date
• Your passport must have at least one blank page for entry stamps
• You are entering for tourism only, not for work or business activities
• You must be able to demonstrate you have sufficient funds for your stay
• You cannot extend this visa-free period once in Vietnam
• You must leave Vietnam before the 90-day period ends (exact duration depends on your nationality)

For those planning stays longer than 90 days or needing to work, conduct business, or pursue other activities, visa-free entry will not be sufficient. You would need to obtain a proper visa before entry.

The visa-free program is designed for tourism only. If you intend to work, teach, conduct business, or receive payment while in Vietnam, you must obtain a work visa or business visa beforehand. Immigration officers may question travelers who appear to be conducting business activities under the visa-free program.

Visa-free entry is single-use only. You cannot exit Vietnam and re-enter under the same visa-free arrangement without leaving the region and re-entering after a period of time. If you need to leave and return multiple times, you should obtain a multiple-entry visa instead.

Practical takeaway: Verify your country on Vietnam's visa-free list and confirm the exact number of days allowed for your nationality. If you plan to stay longer or work, a paid visa will be necessary regardless of visa-free availability.

Methods for Obtaining a Vietnamese Visa

If you do not qualify for visa-free entry or need to stay beyond the visa-free period, you have several options for obtaining a visa. Each method has different costs, processing times, and requirements. Understanding these options allows you to choose the method that best fits your timeline and circumstances.

The traditional method involves visiting a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country. This is the official government route and is often considered the most straightforward approach. Most countries have at least one Vietnamese diplomatic mission. You would need to submit your passport, completed visa application forms, a passport-sized photograph, and proof of funds or travel plans. Processing times typically range from 5 to 10 business days, though some missions offer expedited services for additional fees.

Many travelers now use visa service companies that operate both online and with physical offices. These companies act as intermediaries between travelers and the Vietnamese government. You provide your information and documents to the service company, which processes them on your behalf. This can be faster than visiting an embassy in person, particularly if no embassy is located near you. Processing times range from 3 to 7 business days depending on the service level selected. Companies charge service fees on top of the official visa cost—typically between $15 and $50 depending on processing speed.

The e-visa system allows online applications for tourist visas only. Vietnam's government website permits citizens of eligible countries to submit applications digitally, upload documents, and receive approval via email. The process takes approximately 3 business days. The official e-visa costs $25 USD. However, many unofficial websites offer e-visa services with varying costs and reliability. The official government e-visa website is evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Using this site directly costs less than third-party services but requires you to follow all instructions carefully.

Visa on arrival is a service where you receive an approval letter before travel and present it upon arrival at the airport, paying the visa fee in cash at immigration. Multiple service companies offer this option. Processing is usually fast (same-day to 24 hours), and you pay the visa fee directly at the airport, which can range from $25 to $50 USD depending on visa type and airport location.

Costs vary significantly by method. An e-visa through the official government site costs $25 USD. Private service companies typically charge $35 to $100+ depending on processing speed. Embassy processing costs the official visa fee plus potential local service charges. Visa-on-arrival services usually charge service fees ranging from $10 to $50 on top of the fee paid at the airport.

Practical takeaway: Compare processing times and total costs across methods (official e-visa, service companies, embassy visits, visa-on-arrival). Choose based on how much time you have before travel and how much convenience is worth the additional cost.

Document Requirements and Application Process

Regardless of which visa method you choose, you will need to prepare several documents. Having these items ready before starting the application process streamlines everything and reduces delays. The specific requirements vary slightly depending on visa type and your nationality, but the basics remain consistent.

Your passport is the most critical document. It must be valid for at least six months from your planned arrival date in Vietnam. Your passport must also have at least two blank pages—one for the visa stamp itself and one for entry/exit stamps. If your passport does not meet these requirements, you must renew it before applying for a visa. Additionally, you need to verify that your passport was issued legally and has not been reported as lost or stolen.

A passport-sized photograph is required for most visa applications. This should be a recent photo meeting standard specifications: typically 4 by 6 centimeters (about 1.5 by 2.4 inches), taken within the last six months, with a white background, showing your face clearly without sunglasses
