Understanding Video Poker Basics and Hand Rankings

Video poker is a casino game that combines elements of traditional five-card draw poker with slot machine gameplay. Unlike regular poker where you play against other players, video poker machines are single-player games where you compete against the machine itself. The goal is to create the strongest possible poker hand from the cards you're dealt, and the machine pays you based on a predetermined pay table.

The game begins when you insert money and select your bet amount, typically ranging from one to five coins per hand. The machine then deals five cards face-up on the screen. You decide which cards to keep and which to discard. After you make your selections, the machine replaces the discarded cards with new ones from a standard 52-card deck. Your final five-card hand determines your payout according to the machine's pay table.

Hand rankings in video poker follow standard poker rules, from weakest to strongest. A high card (no matching cards) pays nothing on most machines. One pair (two cards of the same rank) is the minimum paying hand on most video poker games, typically returning your original bet. Two pair consists of two different pairs and usually pays double or triple your bet. Three of a kind means three cards of the same rank. A straight is five cards in sequential order, regardless of suit. A flush is five cards of the same suit. A full house combines three of a kind with a pair. Four of a kind is four cards of the same rank and pays significantly more. A straight flush is five consecutive cards of the same suit. The royal flush—a straight flush from 10 to ace—is the rarest and highest-paying hand, typically worth 250 coins if you bet five coins.

Pay tables vary between machines, which is crucial to understand. Two machines may look identical but pay different amounts for the same hands. For example, one machine might pay 9 coins for a full house and 6 coins for a flush when you bet one coin, while another pays 8 coins for a full house and 5 coins for a flush. These differences significantly impact your long-term results. Always examine the pay table before playing.

Practical Takeaway: Before inserting money into any video poker machine, study the pay table posted on the screen. Write down what each hand pays for a single-coin bet. Compare this information across different machines in the establishment, and choose to play on machines with the highest payouts for full house and flush hands, as these are hands you'll hit reasonably often.

Return to Player Percentages and Game Variance

Return to Player (RTP) is a statistical measure showing what percentage of all money wagered on a machine you can expect to receive back over a very long period of play. Video poker machines typically have RTP percentages ranging from 95% to 99.5%, which is significantly higher than most slot machines that range from 87% to 95%. This means video poker is mathematically more favorable to players, though the casino still maintains an edge.

An RTP of 99% means that over thousands of hands, the machine returns approximately 99 cents for every dollar wagered. If you played $1,000 through a 99% RTP machine, you'd expect to receive about $990 back on average. The remaining $10 is the casino's profit. However, this is an average over an enormous number of hands—potentially 100,000 or more. In a single session of a few hundred hands, you might win more or lose more than this percentage suggests.

Different video poker variations have different RTPs. Jacks or Better, a popular variation where a pair of jacks or higher is the minimum paying hand, can have RTPs ranging from 95% to 99.5% depending on the pay table. Deuces Wild, where all twos are wild cards, typically has lower RTPs when played with poor pay tables. Bonus Poker variants that pay extra for certain four-of-a-kind hands often have higher RTPs on machines with favorable pay tables.

Variance refers to the fluctuation in your results. A high-variance game might have longer dry spells but bigger winning streaks. A low-variance game produces more frequent but smaller wins. Video poker typically has moderate to high variance depending on the specific game type. For example, Jacks or Better is relatively low-variance because you hit paying hands (at minimum, a pair) approximately once every 5 hands. Deuces Wild is higher-variance because wild cards create more possibilities for big hands but also longer stretches without wins.

Understanding variance helps you prepare mentally and financially. If you're playing a high-variance game with $500, you might encounter a losing streak that depletes most of your bankroll before hitting a big hand. Conversely, in a low-variance game, your $500 might last longer because you're winning smaller amounts more frequently. Neither approach is superior—it depends on your preferences and bankroll size.

Practical Takeaway: Research the RTP of specific video poker games and pay tables before playing. Machines with RTPs above 98% are considered player-favorable. If a machine has an RTP below 95%, consider playing a different game or machine. Also assess whether you prefer frequent small wins (low variance) or less frequent but larger wins (high variance), and choose games accordingly.

Optimal Play Strategy and Decision-Making

Video poker differs from regular poker because there's no bluffing or strategy in the traditional sense—your only decisions occur during the draw phase when selecting which cards to keep. However, these decisions significantly impact your results. The difference between optimal play and poor play can mean the difference between a 99% RTP and a 92% RTP on the same machine.

Optimal strategy is based on mathematical calculations of expected value. Every possible hand combination has been computed to determine which cards you should hold to maximize your long-term winnings. For example, in Jacks or Better, if you're dealt a pair of sevens and four cards to a flush, optimal strategy says to keep the pair of sevens. While the four-flush is tempting, the guaranteed value of the pair outweighs the probabilistic value of completing the flush.

Strategy differs between video poker variations because the pay tables are different. Jacks or Better strategy is different from Deuces Wild strategy because wild cards change the calculations entirely. Even within Jacks or Better, strategy can vary slightly depending on the specific pay table—a 9/6 machine (paying 9 for full house, 6 for flush) has slightly different optimal plays than an 8/5 machine.

Here are fundamental strategic principles that apply across most video poker games: Always hold a royal flush or straight flush when dealt one—this is never a question. Hold four cards to a royal flush (like K-Q-J-10, all suited) and discard the fifth card, even if that card completes a smaller hand. Hold a paying hand like a pair over three cards to a straight or flush. Hold four cards to a flush before holding three cards to a straight. When dealt no paying hands, hold four cards to a straight flush over three cards to a straight. If none of these situations apply, hold high cards (like K, Q, J, A) that might contribute to future hands.

Learning optimal strategy requires studying a strategy chart specific to your game. Many video poker enthusiasts memorize strategy charts through practice. Strategy charts are visual guides showing decision trees for different situations. Mobile apps provide strategy assistance, displaying the correct play for any hand you're dealt. Some physical locations even allow printed strategy cards at the machine.

Practical Takeaway: Before playing video poker for money, obtain a strategy chart for your specific game variation and pay table. Either memorize the key decisions or use a strategy app while playing. The difference between playing optimally and playing poorly can improve your RTP by 3-5%, which meaningfully impacts your results over many hands.

Bankroll Management and Realistic Expectations

Bankroll management is your most important tool for playing video poker responsibly and sustainably. Your bankroll is the total amount of money you're willing to risk on video poker. Proper bankroll management ensures you can weather normal losing streaks without depleting your funds entirely, and it prevents chasing losses with money you can't afford to lose.

A fundamental principle is that your bet size should represent only a small percentage of your total bankroll. If you have $500 to play with, betting five coins per hand at a one-dollar denomination means risking $5 per hand. At this rate, a losing streak of 100 hands without hitting even a pair would
