Understanding Vehicle Delivery Jobs and How They Work

Vehicle delivery jobs involve transporting cars, trucks, and other vehicles from one location to another. These positions range from local deliveries between car dealerships to long-distance cross-country hauls. The work can include delivering new vehicles from manufacturing plants to dealerships, moving used cars between auction sites, or transporting customer purchases to their homes.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 3.5 million heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in the United States, with vehicle haulers representing a significant portion of this workforce. Vehicle delivery is different from standard freight trucking because the cargo is the vehicles themselves rather than goods placed inside a truck bed or trailer.

Most vehicle delivery positions fall into two categories: single-vehicle delivery and multi-car hauling. Single-vehicle delivery typically involves driving one car to a destination, which might be a customer's home, a dealership, or an auction site. Multi-car hauling requires operating a specialized trailer that can carry between four and ten vehicles at once, demanding more specialized training and licensing.

The work environment varies significantly. Some drivers stay within a 50-mile radius of their base, completing deliveries in a single day. Others work on cross-country routes, spending days or weeks on the road. Pay structures differ too—some companies pay hourly rates ranging from $16 to $25 per hour for local work, while long-distance haulers may earn $0.40 to $0.70 per mile, potentially resulting in $50,000 to $70,000 annually.

Vehicle delivery jobs exist with car rental companies, dealerships, auction houses, logistics firms, and independent owner-operators. Each has different requirements, schedules, and compensation models. Understanding these distinctions helps determine which type of position might suit your circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Vehicle delivery encompasses multiple job types with varying pay, location requirements, and responsibilities. Identifying whether you prefer local, regional, or long-distance work helps narrow your search to positions matching your lifestyle and goals.

Types of Vehicle Delivery Positions and Where to Find Them

Vehicle delivery jobs take several forms, each with distinct characteristics. Local car hauler positions focus on moving vehicles within a city or region, typically completed in single shifts. Regional delivery covers multiple states, often lasting several days. Long-distance or cross-country delivery involves transporting vehicles across the nation, sometimes taking weeks.

Car dealerships frequently hire delivery drivers to transport vehicles to customers or between locations. These positions typically offer more predictable schedules and local routes. According to industry data, there are over 16,000 new car dealerships across the United States, many maintaining their own delivery fleets or contracting with local drivers.

Used car auction houses like Copart and IAA move thousands of vehicles weekly between locations. They regularly hire drivers for local and regional routes. Car rental companies such as Enterprise and Hertz occasionally need drivers to relocate vehicles between branches or return rental cars to their home locations.

Major logistics and transportation companies employ vehicle delivery specialists. Companies like Penske, U-Haul, and various freight brokers coordinate vehicle movements. These positions often provide training and benefits but may require more experience.

You can find vehicle delivery positions through several channels: job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, and CareerBuilder; company websites directly; local classified ads; trade publications focusing on transportation; and networking with current drivers. Many positions are filled through referrals from existing employees, so connecting with people in the industry can reveal opportunities not listed publicly.

Gig-based platforms are emerging in this space as well. Companies like Roadie and HopSkipDrive occasionally include vehicle delivery tasks, though these are less common than freight or package delivery.

Practical Takeaway: Multiple employer types hire vehicle delivery drivers through diverse channels. Checking dealership websites, auction house listings, major job boards, and company career pages reveals positions that might not appear in other searches.

Licensing Requirements and Certifications

The licensing requirements for vehicle delivery jobs depend on the vehicle type and trailer specifications. Delivering single vehicles typically requires only a standard driver's license and a clean driving record. However, operating multi-car haulers or tractor-trailers requires additional credentials.

Most multi-car hauling positions require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The CDL is issued by individual states and indicates the driver is qualified to operate large commercial vehicles. Obtaining a CDL involves written exams covering federal regulations, vehicle maintenance, and safe driving practices, plus a practical driving test. The process typically takes two to six weeks and costs between $300 and $1,500 depending on your state and whether you attend a formal training school.

Different CDL classes exist based on vehicle weight and configuration. Class A licenses cover combination vehicles (like tractor-trailers), which is what most vehicle haulers need. Class B applies to certain large vehicles that don't meet Class A criteria. Some states issue Class C for smaller commercial vehicles, though requirements vary.

Medical certification is required for CDL holders. You must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam to verify you're medically capable of safe driving. This exam includes vision and hearing tests, blood pressure checks, and a review of medical history. Costs range from $75 to $200, and certification remains valid for two years (or one year if you're over 64).

Background checks are standard across the industry. Companies typically examine your driving record for violations, accidents, and traffic infractions. Many require three to five years of clean driving history. Some positions may examine criminal history, employment verification, and reference checks.

Hazmat endorsements aren't typically necessary for vehicle delivery, but some specialized positions might require them. Air brake certifications may be needed if you operate vehicles equipped with air brakes.

Practical Takeaway: Single-vehicle delivery requires only a standard license and clean record. Multi-vehicle hauling requires a CDL, which takes several weeks and costs $300-$1,500 to obtain, plus ongoing DOT medical certifications.

Equipment, Insurance, and Cost Considerations

Vehicles used in delivery work vary based on job type. Single-vehicle delivery might use a standard tow dolly or trailer, which can cost $2,000 to $10,000 to purchase new. Multi-car haulers (also called auto transporters) are specialized trailers costing $15,000 to $30,000 used or $40,000 to $70,000 new. Some companies provide equipment for employees, eliminating this expense.

Insurance requirements differ significantly between independent operators and company employees. Company employees are typically covered under their employer's commercial insurance policy. Independent contractors need their own commercial auto insurance, which costs $2,000 to $5,000 annually depending on your record, vehicle type, and coverage levels. Commercial liability insurance covers damages you cause to vehicles you're transporting—this is essential and typically costs an additional $1,000 to $3,000 yearly.

Fuel costs represent major expenses for independent operators. A vehicle performing cross-country deliveries might consume 300-500 gallons monthly, costing $1,000 to $2,000 depending on fuel prices and vehicle efficiency. Companies often cover fuel costs for employees, or negotiate fuel discounts through cards and networks.

Vehicle maintenance is another consideration. Regular oil changes, tire replacements, inspections, and repairs for commercial use vehicles can cost $2,000 to $5,000 annually. Owner-operators must budget for this; company employees have maintenance handled by employers.

Tolls on major highways can accumulate to several hundred dollars monthly on long-distance routes, particularly in the Northeast and Midwest. Electronic toll systems and prepaid accounts are standard in the industry.

Miscellaneous costs include GPS devices or smartphone apps for navigation, log books for regulatory compliance, and potentially lodging during long routes. Some positions include per diem payments that offset these costs.

Practical Takeaway: Company employees typically avoid equipment and insurance costs, while independent operators should budget $15,000-$50,000 for initial setup and $3,000-$10,000 annually for ongoing insurance, fuel, and maintenance.
