Free Guide to Using Telegram Privately

Understanding Telegram's Privacy Features and How They Work

Telegram is a messaging platform founded in 2013 that has grown to over 900 million monthly users worldwide. Unlike some other messaging services, Telegram offers several built-in privacy features that users can configure according to their preferences. Understanding these features is the first step toward using the platform more privately.

One of Telegram's core features is that messages are stored on encrypted servers rather than on your device alone. This differs from some competitors. When you send a message through Telegram, it travels through the company's infrastructure, which uses encryption protocols. However, the standard chat feature does not use end-to-end encryption by default—meaning Telegram's servers can technically access message content in regular chats.

For higher privacy, Telegram offers "Secret Chats," which use end-to-end encryption. In a Secret Chat, messages are encrypted on your device before transmission and can only be decrypted on the recipient's device. Telegram's servers never hold the unencrypted message content. Secret Chats also include features like self-destructing messages, where messages automatically delete after a set time period ranging from 1 second to 1 week.

The platform also allows you to control who can see your phone number, profile photo, and when you were last active. These settings appear in your privacy and security menu. You can set different rules for different groups of people—for example, allowing close contacts to see your status while blocking strangers.

Telegram does not use SMS for two-factor authentication like some services. Instead, it uses a code sent through the Telegram app itself, which some security researchers consider more secure since SMS messages can be intercepted. The platform also shows you which devices have access to your account, allowing you to see where your account is being used.

Practical Takeaway: Spend 15 minutes reviewing your privacy settings in Telegram's Settings menu. Note the difference between regular chats (which offer convenience but less privacy) and Secret Chats (which offer stronger privacy but fewer features like group chat capability). Decide which communication types warrant which approach based on your needs.

Configuring Your Privacy Settings Step by Step

Telegram's privacy settings are located in your account settings menu and provide granular control over what information you share. To access these settings, open Telegram, tap your profile icon in the lower right corner, select "Settings," then navigate to "Privacy and Security." This menu contains most of the controls you need to customize your privacy experience.

The "Phone Number" privacy setting controls who can see your phone number. You have four options: Everyone, My Contacts, Nobody, or a custom list. Most privacy-conscious users select either "My Contacts" or "Nobody." If you choose "Nobody," other users can still find you through your username if you have one set up, but they won't see your actual phone number. This is particularly useful if you want to use Telegram for group communications without revealing your phone number to strangers.

The "Last Seen & Online" setting shows when you were last active on Telegram. Options include Everyone, My Contacts, Nobody, or a custom list. Some users prefer "Nobody" to avoid giving others information about when they're online. Note that even if you hide this, Telegram may still show typing indicators and read receipts (indicators that you've seen a message) in regular chats unless you disable those separately.

Your profile photo visibility can be controlled similarly. You can choose who sees your current profile picture: Everyone, My Contacts, or Nobody. This prevents strangers from seeing what you look like unless you've explicitly added them as contacts.

The "Status" setting lets you choose who can see if you're online. This is distinct from "Last Seen" and provides real-time presence information. For maximum privacy, setting this to "Nobody" means no one sees whether you're currently using Telegram.

Telegram also offers "Passcode Lock," which requires you to enter a PIN code each time you open the app. This prevents someone with physical access to your unlocked phone from immediately accessing Telegram. You can set it to lock after a specified time period, such as immediately or after 1 minute of inactivity.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an additional security layer. When enabled, logging into your Telegram account from a new device requires both your password and a code sent through your existing Telegram app. This means even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access your account from a new location without your knowledge. Setting up 2FA is highly recommended for anyone concerned about account security.

Practical Takeaway: Create a personal privacy policy for yourself. Write down which settings matter most to you—for example, hiding your last seen status and phone number. Then apply those settings systematically. Check these settings quarterly, as Telegram occasionally updates its interface.

Using Secret Chats for Sensitive Communications

Secret Chats represent Telegram's strongest privacy feature for message content. Unlike regular chats, Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption that Telegram cannot decrypt. This means only you and the recipient can read the messages. Secret Chats have been available since Telegram's early days and use the MTProto 2.0 encryption protocol.

To start a Secret Chat, open Telegram, select a contact, and tap the menu icon (three dots). Select "Start Secret Chat." A new conversation opens marked with a lock icon, indicating encryption is active. Secret Chats work only between two people—you cannot create group Secret Chats. They also work only on the specific device where the conversation was started; if you start a Secret Chat on your phone, you cannot access it from your tablet or computer.

One key feature of Secret Chats is that messages do not have a permanent record on Telegram's servers. Regular chats are stored on Telegram's servers indefinitely (unless you delete them), which means Telegram retains access to that data. With Secret Chats, messages exist only on the devices involved in the conversation. If you delete a Secret Chat, the conversation history disappears.

Self-destructing messages are a Secret Chat feature that automatically delete after a set time. You can set messages to disappear after 1 second, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or custom intervals. Once the timer expires, the message vanishes from both devices. This is useful for sharing sensitive information that you don't want permanently stored anywhere. However, note that recipients can take screenshots before the message disappears.

Secret Chats include screenshot notifications—Telegram notifies you if the other person takes a screenshot of your messages. While this doesn't prevent screenshots, it does alert you that someone captured your message content. This feature works only for photos and media shared in Secret Chats, not for text messages.

It's important to understand Secret Chat limitations. Secret Chats don't support group conversations, channels, or forwarding to other chats. They also cannot include bots or integrated apps. If you need a feature that Secret Chats don't support, you must use a regular chat, which means accepting lower message privacy.

Secret Chats also display a security code—a series of emoji or numbers that visually represent the encryption key for that specific conversation. You can compare this code with the other person (either in person or through another communication method) to verify that your conversation is not being intercepted. If the codes match, you can be confident the chat is secure.

Practical Takeaway: Reserve Secret Chats for communications you want to keep private from Telegram itself—such as sensitive personal information, financial details, or health matters. Use regular chats for casual conversation and group communications where the privacy level of regular encryption is sufficient for your purposes.

Managing Your Active Sessions and Device Security

Telegram allows you to view every device currently logged into your account. This feature, found under "Settings" → "Privacy and Security" → "Active Sessions," shows you a list of all phones, tablets, computers, and browsers where your Telegram account is open. Each entry displays the device type, operating system, location (based on IP address), and when it was last active.

Regularly reviewing active sessions helps you catch unauthorized access. If you see a device you don't recognize, you can immediately log out from that session by tapping the X next to it. This terminates that session and prevents further access from that device. This is particularly important if you've shared your password with someone, used Telegram on a shared computer, or suspect your account credentials
