Free Guide to U.S. Visa Fees and Costs

Overview of U.S. Visa Types and Associated Costs

The United States offers many different visa categories, and each one comes with its own set of fees. Understanding which visa type matches your situation is an important first step in learning about potential costs. The U.S. Department of State manages visa processing and fee structures, and these fees help cover the administrative work involved in reviewing visa petitions and conducting interviews.

Visa categories fall into two main groups: nonimmigrant visas and immigrant visas. Nonimmigrant visas are temporary and include tourist visas (B-2), work visas (H-1B, L-1, O-1), student visas (F-1), and exchange visitor visas (J-1). Immigrant visas are for people who plan to live permanently in the United States and become lawful permanent residents. Each category has different requirements and different fees associated with it.

The base visa application fee for most nonimmigrant visas is currently $160, though certain visa types may have different amounts. For example, some categories like the E-2 treaty investor visa charge $205. These fees typically cover the consular processing fee charged by U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.

Beyond the basic visa fee, applicants often encounter additional costs that vary based on their situation. These might include medical examination fees, police clearance certificate costs, document translation services, and fees for services like expedited processing or document copying. A person applying for an H-1B work visa may face different total costs than someone applying for an F-1 student visa because the supporting documentation requirements differ.

Practical Takeaway: Before beginning any visa process, research the specific visa category that matches your purpose for coming to the United States. Each category has a base fee, but your total out-of-pocket costs will depend on what documentation you need to gather and where you are located.

Nonimmigrant Visa Fees Explained

Nonimmigrant visas allow foreign nationals to enter and stay in the United States for a temporary purpose. These visas are far more common than immigrant visas, with millions issued each year. The State Department charges fees based on visa type and processing method, and understanding these costs helps you plan your budget.

The standard visa application fee for most nonimmigrant visas is $160 (MRV fee, or Machine Readable Visa fee). This covers the cost of processing your application at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country. Common nonimmigrant visa types that use this fee include tourism (B-2), business visits (B-1), and temporary worker categories. The fee is typically paid when you schedule your visa interview appointment.

Some nonimmigrant visa categories charge different fees. The H-1B visa (for specialty occupation workers), L-1 visa (for intracompany transferees), and O-1 visa (for individuals with extraordinary ability) each cost $190. The E-2 treaty investor visa costs $205. The C-2 visa (used for transit to the United Nations) costs $162. These variations reflect differences in processing requirements and administrative costs for different visa categories.

In addition to the visa application fee, many applicants must pay a visa issuance fee. This fee, called the Affidavit of Support fee or immigrant visa fee, varies. For many nonimmigrant visas, there may be no additional issuance fee beyond the initial application fee. However, if you need to change your visa status while in the United States (for example, switching from a tourist visa to a student visa), you may need to file Form I-539 or another application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which involves separate fees that typically range from $290 to $640 depending on the form.

The location where you apply can also affect costs indirectly. Some embassies and consulates may charge local fees for services like document translation or police checks, which are outside the official U.S. visa fee. If you're applying from a country with limited U.S. diplomatic presence, you might need to travel to a neighboring country for your interview, adding travel expenses to your total cost.

Practical Takeaway: Look up the specific fee for your visa category on the State Department website or your local U.S. embassy/consulate website. Most nonimmigrant visas cost between $160 and $205, but plan for additional costs related to supporting documents and local services.

Immigrant Visa and Green Card Fees

An immigrant visa leads to permanent residence in the United States—often called a green card. The fees for immigrant visas are substantially higher than nonimmigrant visa fees because the process involves more extensive background checks, security clearances, and administrative review. Immigrant visa processing typically takes many months or longer, reflecting the complexity of the system.

The immigrant visa application fee is $335 as of recent updates. This covers the visa processing itself at a U.S. consulate abroad. However, immigrant visa applicants must also pay additional required fees that nonimmigrant visa applicants typically do not encounter. The Affidavit of Support fee is $120 for most cases. The diversity visa lottery (if applicable) has no fee to enter but still requires payment of visa fees if selected.

Before receiving an immigrant visa, applicants must pass a medical examination (also called an I-693 civil surgeon examination). This medical exam costs between $300 and $800 depending on where you live and which doctor performs it. The exam is required by U.S. immigration law and cannot be waived. It includes tests for communicable diseases, physical and mental health assessment, and vaccination requirements.

Police clearance certificates, also called police records or criminal history certificates, are required for immigrant visa cases. The cost of obtaining these documents varies by country—some charge nothing, while others charge up to $50 to $200 per certificate. Some countries require multiple certificates (one at the national level and one at the provincial or local level), increasing the total expense.

Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) is filed by people who are already in the United States and want to become permanent residents without going through consular processing. This form costs $640 as of recent years, though some categories like refugees and asylees may have reduced or no filing fees. The I-485 also requires a biometric services fee of $85 for most applicants, which covers fingerprinting and background checks.

Diversity visa lottery winners must also pay visa fees plus a surcharge called the Visa Security and Border Security Fee of $120. Refugees and asylees have different fee structures—refugees typically pay no visa fees, and asylees who file Form I-485 may pay reduced fees of $50 to $100.

Practical Takeaway: Immigrant visa costs typically range from $800 to $2,000 or more when combining the visa fee, medical exam, police clearances, and other required documents. Plan ahead and budget for these expenses over time, as some documents take weeks to obtain.

Additional Costs Beyond Base Visa Fees

The advertised visa fee is only one piece of your total cost. Real-world visa applications involve many additional expenses that can significantly increase your budget. Understanding these costs helps you prepare financially and avoid surprises.

Translation of documents is often required. Any document not in English must typically be translated by a certified translator before submission to immigration authorities. Translation costs generally range from $15 to $50 per page, depending on the language and translator. A person submitting a birth certificate, marriage certificate, educational transcripts, employment records, and financial documents could easily spend $200 to $500 on translations alone.

Obtaining documents from your home country can be surprisingly expensive. Birth certificates, marriage records, educational diplomas, employment verification letters, and police clearances all cost money to request. Some countries charge $5 per document, while others charge $50 or more. If you need expedited processing, costs increase further. A person needing five different documents might spend $100 to $300 just on document acquisition and postage.

Passport fees apply if you don't already have a valid passport. A new passport can cost $100 to $300 depending on your country and how quickly you need it. Some countries offer expedited passport services for an additional $50 to $100 fee. Since your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay, you may need to renew it even
