Free Guide to Updating Your Computer Drivers

Understanding Computer Drivers and Why They Matter

Computer drivers are small software programs that allow your operating system to communicate with hardware devices. Think of a driver as a translator between your computer's main software and physical components like your printer, graphics card, network adapter, or keyboard. Without drivers, your operating system wouldn't know how to send instructions to these devices or interpret information coming back from them.

Every piece of hardware attached to your computer needs a driver to function properly. Your graphics card needs a driver to display images on your monitor at the right resolution and quality. Your printer needs a driver to receive print jobs from your computer and know how to process them. Your network adapter needs a driver to connect to the internet. Even your mouse and keyboard rely on drivers, though modern operating systems often include basic drivers for these common devices.

Manufacturers release driver updates for several reasons. They may fix bugs that cause crashes or performance issues. They may add support for new features in your hardware. They may improve compatibility with the latest operating system updates. They may enhance security by patching vulnerabilities. A driver update that worked well six months ago might have issues today if your operating system received a major update.

You might notice signs that your drivers need attention. Your device may stop working entirely. Performance might slow down. You might see error messages in your system settings. Your computer might crash or freeze when using a particular device. Games might run slower or display graphical glitches. These problems don't always mean you need a driver update, but outdated drivers are often the cause.

Practically speaking, you should check your drivers at least once or twice per year, or whenever you experience problems with a specific device. Major operating system updates sometimes require driver updates too. Setting a reminder to check drivers during routine computer maintenance can prevent many common problems before they start.

Methods for Identifying Which Drivers Need Updating

Before you update drivers, you need to know which ones actually exist on your computer and which ones might be outdated. Your operating system keeps track of all installed hardware and their drivers. Windows and Mac both provide built-in tools to view this information without needing any third-party software.

On Windows computers, you can access Device Manager, which shows all your hardware and current driver information. To open Device Manager, right-click the Windows Start button and select "Device Manager" from the menu. You'll see a list of hardware categories like "Display adapters," "Sound, video and game controllers," "Network adapters," and "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Click the arrow next to any category to see the specific devices and their drivers. If you see a yellow exclamation mark next to a device, it indicates a problem with that driver.

On Mac computers, choose the Apple menu and select "About This Mac." Click "System Report" to see hardware information. Navigate to "Hardware" in the left sidebar to view your devices. While Macs show less driver detail than Windows, this screen tells you what hardware the system recognizes.

To check if your drivers are outdated, visit the manufacturer's website for each device. For graphics cards from NVIDIA or AMD, visit their official websites. For motherboard drivers, go to your computer's manufacturer's site like Dell, HP, or Lenovo. For printers, network adapters, and other peripherals, visit the individual manufacturer's website. These sites typically have a "Drivers" or "Support" section where you can search for your specific device model and see the latest driver version available.

Compare the version number shown in Device Manager to the version available on the manufacturer's website. If the available version is newer, a driver update is available. Keep a list of devices that have newer drivers waiting, as this helps you plan your update session. Note that some manufacturers update drivers monthly while others update quarterly, so the update frequency varies by company.

Step-by-Step Process for Updating Drivers on Windows

Windows provides several ways to update drivers depending on your comfort level with technology and the specific device involved. The easiest method is using Windows Update, which automatically pushes driver updates for many common devices. Open your Windows Settings by clicking the Start button and selecting "Settings." Navigate to "Update & Security" and click "Check for updates." Windows will scan for available updates including some driver updates. If updates are found, follow the prompts to install them. Your computer may need to restart after installation completes.

For devices where Windows Update doesn't provide driver updates, you'll need to visit the manufacturer's website. Go to the device manufacturer's support page and locate the driver section. Search for your specific device model. Download the driver file appropriate for your Windows version—make sure you select the correct one, as downloading a 32-bit driver for a 64-bit system won't work. Most computers today run 64-bit Windows, which you can verify in Device Manager by looking at your processor.

Once the driver file is downloaded, you'll typically see an executable file (.exe) on your computer. Double-click this file to run the installer. The installation wizard will guide you through the process. Read any prompts carefully, as some installers ask you to close certain programs or restart your computer. Let the installer complete fully before closing any windows. Most drivers require a computer restart to take effect, so save your work before beginning the installation.

An alternative method involves right-clicking a device in Device Manager and selecting "Update driver." This opens a dialog asking whether you want to search automatically or browse your computer for driver files. If you've already downloaded the driver file, choose "Browse my computer for driver software" and navigate to the file location. Windows will install the driver from there. If you haven't yet downloaded the file, choosing the automatic search option may locate drivers through Windows Update.

After updating a driver, monitor that device for proper function. Test your printer by printing a page. Test your graphics card by playing a game or opening a graphics-heavy application. Test your network adapter by running a speed test. If problems occur after a driver update, you can roll back to the previous driver version through Device Manager by right-clicking the device, selecting "Properties," going to the "Driver" tab, and clicking "Roll Back Driver." This is a valuable safety net if a new driver causes problems.

Step-by-Step Process for Updating Drivers on Mac

Mac computers handle driver updates differently than Windows systems. Apple integrates most drivers directly into the operating system, so you update drivers primarily through the standard macOS updates rather than downloading them separately from manufacturers. To check for system updates, click the Apple menu and select "System Preferences" or "System Settings." Look for an option labeled "Software Update" or "General" and click it. The system will check for available updates. If updates are found, you can choose to install them immediately or schedule installation for later. Allow the update process to complete fully, as this often installs new drivers alongside operating system improvements.

For third-party peripherals like printers and graphics tablets, many manufacturers provide their own software that includes driver updates. Visit the manufacturer's website and look for Mac-compatible software for your specific device. Download and run the installer, which typically handles both driver installation and any companion applications. Some manufacturers have dedicated updater applications that periodically check for new versions—these can be configured to notify you when updates are available.

To check what drivers and device software you have installed, click the Apple menu and select "About This Mac." Click "System Report" to view installed drivers and device information. While Mac doesn't display driver versions as prominently as Windows, this report shows what the system recognizes. For detailed information about a specific piece of hardware, click its entry in the System Report.

Some specialized hardware like certain graphics cards or audio interfaces may have manufacturer-specific control software. Adobe Creative Suite software, for example, may require specific driver versions for certain tablets. Check the software documentation to see if your particular application has driver requirements. The software documentation typically explains where to obtain compatible drivers.

Mac users should be aware that updating to a major new macOS version sometimes causes compatibility issues with older hardware. If you have older peripherals, check the manufacturer's website before updating your operating system to confirm driver compatibility with the new version. Occasionally, manufacturers discontinue driver support for older devices, meaning they won't release drivers for the newest operating systems.

Important Safety Considerations When Updating Drivers

Updating drivers carries minimal risk but requires basic precautions to avoid problems. The most important rule is to never update drivers from untrusted sources. Only download drivers from the official manufacturer websites or through your operating system's official update channels. Fake driver websites sometimes exist that look legitimate but distribute malware disguised as drivers. Search carefully and verify you're on the correct manufacturer website before clicking the download button.
