Free Guide to UK Visa Routes and Requirements

Overview of UK Visa Routes and Immigration Categories

The United Kingdom has several visa routes designed for different types of people wanting to enter or stay in the country. Understanding which route might be relevant to your situation is the first step in learning about UK immigration. The main routes include work visas, student visas, family-based visas, and visitor visas, among others. Each route has different requirements, costs, and processing times.

According to UK government statistics, in 2023, over 1.2 million visas were issued globally. The majority went to workers and students. For example, the skilled worker visa route received approximately 320,000 applications in the year ending June 2023, making it one of the most common immigration pathways. Student visas accounted for around 715,000 approvals in the same period.

The visa system is managed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), which is part of the Home Office. Different routes have different rules about what you can and cannot do while in the UK. For instance, someone on a student visa can only study at their registered educational institution and may have restrictions on working hours. A visitor, by contrast, cannot work at all but can visit for tourism, business meetings, or visiting family.

The cost of visas varies significantly. A Tier 2 skilled worker visa costs £719 for 3 years or £1,035 for 5 years (as of 2024). Student visas cost £719. Family visas, such as spouse visas, cost £1,033. Visitor visas cost much less—standard visas are £115 for 6 months or £272 for 2 years. These costs do not include the immigration health surcharge, which is an additional annual fee of £1,035 per person (or £776 for students and youth mobility scheme participants).

Practical Takeaway: Before exploring any visa route, identify which category matches your primary reason for wanting to enter or stay in the UK. This determines which rules, costs, and requirements will apply to you.

Work Visas and Employment-Based Immigration

Work-based visas are for people who have a job offer from a UK employer or who are self-employed. The main work visa route is the Skilled Worker visa, which replaced the Tier 2 visa system in 2021. To pursue this route, you need a sponsor—a UK employer who is licensed to hire people from outside the UK and Europe.

The Skilled Worker visa has several key requirements. Your job must be on the list of occupations that the UK considers "shortage occupations" or you must meet a salary threshold. As of April 2024, the minimum salary is £33,000 per year, though some sectors have lower thresholds. For instance, nurses and certain care workers can be sponsored at £20,960 per year. Your employer must also prove there is no suitable worker available in the UK for the position. Healthcare professionals, skilled trades, and technology workers are among the most commonly sponsored roles.

The points-based system determines whether you can proceed. You earn points for having a job offer (50 points), meeting the salary threshold (20 points), and having a certificate of sponsorship from your employer (20 points). You need 70 points to proceed. This means that having a job offer from a licensed employer with an appropriate salary almost always puts you over the points threshold.

Processing times for Skilled Worker visas vary, but standard processing usually takes 3-4 weeks from submission. Priority processing is available for an additional fee of £284, reducing processing time to 5 working days in most cases. You can bring dependents (spouse and children under 18) on your visa, though they must meet additional requirements and you must earn enough to support them.

Other work routes include the Intra-Company Transfer visa (for employees moving within multinational companies), the Start-up visa (for entrepreneurs starting a new business in the UK), and the Innovator visa (for experienced business people creating new businesses). Each has distinct requirements and point thresholds.

Practical Takeaway: If you want to work in the UK, determine whether a licensed UK employer can sponsor you and whether your intended role is on the skilled occupations list. Research your industry's typical sponsorship landscape—some sectors, like healthcare and tech, sponsor workers more regularly than others.

Student Visas and Education Routes

Student visas allow people from outside the UK and Ireland to study at higher education institutions, secondary schools, and other educational providers in the UK. This is one of the largest visa categories. Student visa holders can study for degrees, postgraduate qualifications, language courses, and other educational programs at institutions approved by UK Visas and Immigration.

To obtain a Student visa, you need a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your educational institution. This document confirms that the school has accepted you and that you meet the financial requirements to study there. Your educational provider must be on the register of licensed Student sponsors. The cost of a Student visa is £719, and the immigration health surcharge is currently £776 per year for students.

Financial requirements depend on where you study and your course length. You must prove you have enough money to cover your tuition fees and living costs for the duration of your study. For postgraduate studies in London, living costs are estimated at approximately £1,265 per month. Outside London, the estimate is around £1,015 per month. Universities publish their own cost estimates, and these figures should guide how much money you need to demonstrate.

Student visa holders can work during their studies, subject to restrictions. Full-time students at university level can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official holidays. Those studying at lower levels have more restricted working rights. Students studying on diploma courses often cannot work at all. The specific restrictions depend on your course level and institution type.

Post-study work options are available through the Graduate route, which allows graduates to stay in the UK for 2 years (3 years for those with a master's degree or PhD) to seek and undertake work. This route is not a separate visa application; it is a transition option available to those who have completed their studies on a Student visa.

Practical Takeaway: Before committing to a UK education, understand the total costs including tuition, living expenses, and visa fees. Check your institution's estimated living costs and gather supporting financial documents (bank statements, proof of sponsorship) well in advance of your visa submission.

Family and Spousal Visas

Family visas allow people to join relatives living in the UK. The main family routes are spouse or civil partner visas, fiancé(e) visas, dependent child visas, and adult dependent relative visas. Each route has specific requirements designed to ensure that the UK resident can support their family member and that the relationship is genuine.

Spouse visas are for people married to or in a civil partnership with a UK citizen or someone with settled status. To sponsor a spouse, the UK resident must be at least 21 years old and meet a financial threshold. The minimum annual income is currently £33,300, or £16,650 if the UK resident has been living in the UK for less than 2 years. Additional income or savings are required if you are supporting dependent children. For example, a UK resident with one dependent child must earn at least £38,596 annually.

Spousal visa holders can work without restrictions, which is an important difference from some other visa categories. Initial spouse visas are granted for 2 years and 6 months. After this time, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (often called "settled status"), which grants permanent residence. To transition to Indefinite Leave to Remain, you must have been in a genuine relationship for 5 years continuously and meet English language requirements at an intermediate level (B1).

Fiancé(e) visas are for people engaged to marry a UK citizen or someone with settled status. The process is similar to spouse visas, with the same financial requirements, but the initial visa is granted for 6 months. During this time, you must marry or form a civil partnership. After marriage, you can apply for a spouse visa using the standard 2 years and 6 months route.

Dependent child visas are for children under 18 whose parent or guardian is in the UK. The UK-based parent or guardian must have adequate income and housing to support the child. Adult dependent relatives (such as
