Understanding U-Haul Trailer Types and Their Uses

U-Haul offers several trailer models designed for different moving and hauling needs. The company operates one of the largest trailer rental fleets in North America, with more than 18,000 trailers available at over 21,000 locations nationwide. Understanding which trailer type matches your needs is the first step in the rental process.

Enclosed trailers provide protection from weather and road debris, making them ideal for moving household items, furniture, or sensitive equipment. These trailers come in various sizes, typically ranging from 4x8 feet to 8x20 feet. The enclosed design prevents dirt and moisture from entering during transport. Utility trailers, by contrast, are open designs suitable for hauling yard waste, construction materials, firewood, or landscaping equipment. They generally cost less than enclosed options and work well when weather protection isn't necessary.

Specialized trailers serve specific purposes. Auto transport trailers hold one or two vehicles, with some models featuring enclosed protection. Boat trailers accommodate watercraft of different sizes and weights. Cargo trailers fall between utility and enclosed trailers in terms of protection and cost. Flatbed trailers suit oversized items that won't fit in standard trailers.

U-Haul also rents car dollies and trailers designed for one-way moves, which cost differently than local rentals. The company publishes pricing information online, though costs vary by location, season, and demand. During peak moving seasons (May through September), rental rates typically run higher than off-season rates.

Practical takeaway: Visit a U-Haul location or website to view photos and specifications of each trailer type. Measure your items and compare dimensions against available trailers to find the best fit for your actual hauling needs, not an oversized option that will cost more than necessary.

How U-Haul Pricing Works and What Affects Your Cost

U-Haul pricing operates on several factors that customers should understand before renting. The company uses a model that combines base rental rates, mileage charges, and additional fees. Unlike some competitors, U-Haul typically charges per mile rather than offering unlimited mileage packages on most trailer rentals.

Base rental rates cover the trailer use for a specific period, usually 24 hours or multiple days. These rates vary significantly based on trailer size and type. A small 4x8 utility trailer costs considerably less than an 8x20 enclosed trailer. Location matters as well—renting in urban areas generally costs more than renting in rural regions. Seasonal demand heavily influences pricing; moving season rates (roughly May through September) can be 50-100% higher than winter rates.

Mileage charges apply to most trailer rentals, calculated per mile traveled. The per-mile rate depends on the trailer type and size. Larger enclosed trailers carry higher per-mile fees than small utility trailers. For example, a standard 5x8 enclosed trailer might charge 59 cents per mile, while a larger 7x14 trailer could charge 79 cents per mile. Some specialty trailers have different mileage structures. Understanding your total distance helps estimate overall costs—a 500-mile move in a mid-sized trailer could add $250-400 in mileage charges alone.

Additional costs may include damage waiver fees (typically $15-30 per rental), fuel surcharges during periods of high gas prices, late return fees if you keep the trailer past your reserved time, and equipment rentals like furniture pads or dollies. Taxes apply to all rentals. U-Haul's website provides price calculators where you can enter your trailer type, rental dates, and mileage to see estimated costs before committing.

Practical takeaway: Use U-Haul's online price calculator multiple times with different trailer sizes and dates to compare costs. Book during off-peak seasons (October through April) if your schedule permits, as pricing can be substantially lower. Track your estimated mileage carefully since this represents a significant portion of total rental cost.

Reservation Process and What Information You'll Need

Renting a U-Haul trailer involves straightforward steps whether you reserve online, by phone, or in person. Understanding what information to gather beforehand speeds up the process and helps ensure accurate pricing quotes.

To make a reservation, you'll need to provide basic personal information including your name, phone number, and email address. A valid driver's license is required at pickup. The company asks for a payment method to hold your reservation—U-Haul accepts credit cards, debit cards, and certain other payment options. You'll specify your desired pickup location and return location (which can be different for one-way rentals), along with your preferred pickup and return dates.

Describing your move helps the company suggest appropriate equipment. You should be prepared to explain what you're moving—household goods, commercial items, vehicles, equipment—and provide rough measurements or counts of items. This information helps staff recommend the right trailer size. If you're unsure, many U-Haul locations offer in-person consultations where staff can assess your needs directly.

Reservation options include online booking through U-Haul's website or mobile app, phone reservations by calling 1-800-468-4285, or visiting a local U-Haul center in person. Online booking typically takes 5-10 minutes and provides immediate confirmation. Phone reservations offer the chance to discuss details with a representative. In-person reservations at U-Haul stores or authorized dealers allow you to see trailers in person and discuss specifications face-to-face.

U-Haul typically holds reservations without requiring payment until pickup. You can modify your reservation through the website, app, or by phone if your plans change. However, cancellation policies vary, so reviewing your specific reservation terms is important. Most one-way reservations cannot be canceled without fees, while local rentals often have more flexible cancellation options.

Practical takeaway: Gather information about your move before making reservations—destination address, preferred dates, and item descriptions. Use online reservation tools to compare multiple dates and trailer sizes, as the same rental might cost significantly different amounts based on one or two day differences, especially during peak season. Keep your reservation confirmation number accessible for your pickup appointment.

Preparation Steps Before Pickup Day

Proper preparation in the days leading up to your rental pickup minimizes problems and ensures smooth execution of your move. Taking time to plan ahead typically results in faster pickup processes and fewer complications.

First, confirm your reservation 24-48 hours before pickup. Log into your U-Haul account online or call the rental location directly to verify your pickup time, trailer type, and any special requests you made. This allows staff to ensure your trailer is ready and gives you a chance to catch any errors or changes needed. Weather forecasts should be checked, particularly for long-distance moves, as severe weather might affect travel plans or require additional preparation steps.

Prepare your items for loading by organizing and packing them before pickup day. This prevents you from renting the trailer longer than necessary (and being charged additional time fees). Sort items into categories and use sturdy boxes for smaller goods. Heavy items should go in smaller boxes to prevent boxes from becoming too heavy to lift. Create an inventory list of what you're moving; this proves valuable if items are lost or damaged and helps you organize your move mentally.

Gather required documentation for pickup. You'll need a valid driver's license, payment method (credit or debit card), and your reservation confirmation. If you're a first-time U-Haul customer, your license will be copied and stored in the rental company's system. Some locations may ask additional questions about your move destination or purpose.

Inspect your vehicle and plan your route before pickup day. Ensure your vehicle can tow the trailer you've reserved—your vehicle's owner's manual lists towing capacity. Trailers require appropriate hitch connections; verify that your vehicle has the correct hitch type or plan to rent one. Plan your driving route and identify rest stops, as fatigue is a factor in rental-related incidents. Download offline maps on your phone in case cellular service is unavailable during your drive.

Understand the vehicle-trailer combination's maneuverability and stopping distance before attempting to drive in heavy traffic. Practice backing up in a large empty parking lot if you've never towed a trailer. Different driving techniques apply to towing—wider turns, longer braking distance, and attention to weight distribution all matter for safe transport.
