Understanding TSA PreCheck and Where to Enroll

TSA PreCheck is a traveler identification program run by the Transportation Security Administration that allows certain people to move through airport security checkpoints faster when flying within the United States. The program costs $85 for five years of membership. This guide covers information about where you can go to enroll in the program and what to expect at enrollment locations.

The TSA PreCheck program began in 2011 as a way to streamline security screening for lower-risk travelers. Members receive a Trusted Traveler card that they can use when booking flights. When you go through security at participating airports, you may be able to use a faster security lane where you can keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on, and leave your laptop and liquids in your carry-on bag.

Enrollment involves an in-person appointment where you provide personal information and biometric data like fingerprints. The TSA then reviews your background to determine whether you meet program requirements. This is different from simply paying a fee online—you must visit a physical location and complete the process face-to-face with a TSA official or authorized representative.

Understanding the enrollment process and knowing where locations are found can help you plan your visit. Many people use TSA PreCheck if they fly frequently, as the time savings at security can add up significantly over a five-year period. Business travelers, families who travel regularly, and frequent leisure travelers often find the program worthwhile.

Takeaway: TSA PreCheck enrollment requires an in-person visit to an official enrollment center. Before searching for a location, confirm you understand what the program involves and whether it matches your travel patterns.

Finding Official TSA PreCheck Enrollment Centers

The TSA operates official enrollment centers at various locations across the country. These are staffed by TSA personnel who conduct the complete enrollment process. To find the nearest official TSA PreCheck enrollment center, visit the TSA's website and use their enrollment location search tool. You can search by city, state, or ZIP code to see what centers are near you.

Official TSA enrollment centers are typically located at major airports. You can find them in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, and many others. The TSA has worked to expand the number of enrollment locations in recent years. Some smaller cities and regions may not have a dedicated TSA PreCheck enrollment center, which means nearby airports or other approved locations become the closest option.

When you search for locations on the TSA website, the results show you the address, hours of operation, and whether appointments are currently being scheduled. Some enrollment centers have extended evening and weekend hours, while others operate only during standard business hours. This information helps you plan when you can visit.

The TSA website also shows you how far each center is from your location, making it easier to decide which one works best for your schedule. If you live in a rural area far from airports, you may need to plan a trip to a nearby city to access an enrollment center. Some people combine their TSA PreCheck enrollment appointment with other business when traveling.

Takeaway: Use the TSA's official enrollment location finder on their website to locate the nearest center to you. Note the hours and distance before booking an appointment to ensure the location is truly convenient for your schedule.

Authorized Enrollment Locations Beyond TSA Centers

In addition to official TSA enrollment centers, the TSA has approved other locations where you can complete the enrollment process. These authorized enrollment locations include office locations of certain private companies that partner with the TSA. The most well-known partners include companies like Idemia, which operates enrollment centers in various cities nationwide.

Private enrollment companies operate under strict TSA guidelines and use the same enrollment procedures as official TSA centers. The staff members at these locations are trained and certified to collect your information, take your fingerprints, and process your enrollment. You will not receive different services or less official status if you enroll at an authorized private location rather than an official TSA center.

Authorized enrollment locations may have more flexible scheduling and longer hours than some TSA centers. Some of these locations are in shopping centers or downtown business districts, which can be more convenient than traveling to an airport. The cost remains the same whether you enroll at a TSA center or an authorized private location—$85 for five years of membership.

You can find authorized enrollment locations through the TSA website's location search tool, which displays both official TSA centers and authorized partners. The search results will show you the type of location (whether it is operated by the TSA or by an authorized partner) along with address and hours. Many people find authorized private locations more convenient due to better hours or closer proximity to their home or workplace.

Takeaway: Authorized private enrollment locations offer the same process and validity as official TSA centers. When searching for locations, compare hours and distance to find the option that best fits your schedule, whether that is a TSA center or an authorized partner location.

What to Bring and Expect During Your Enrollment Visit

Before visiting an enrollment location, you will need to gather several documents. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID such as a passport, driver's license, or state identification card. You will also need proof of citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. This can include a passport, birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or permanent resident card. The staff at the enrollment location can tell you which documents they accept if you are unsure.

You may also need to provide proof of your current address. This can be a utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, or other official document showing your name and address. Check the specific requirements for your enrollment location by reviewing the information provided when you book your appointment, as requirements can vary slightly between different centers.

When you arrive at your appointment, you will complete a form with personal information including your name, date of birth, address, and travel history. You will have an interview with a TSA officer or authorized staff member who may ask you questions about your background and travel habits. The officer is conducting a background review as part of the enrollment process. Be honest and straightforward in your answers.

The enrollment location will collect your fingerprints digitally using a fingerprint scanner. This is a standard part of the background review process. The appointment typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. After you complete your appointment, you will receive information about what happens next. The TSA will conduct a background check that may take a few weeks. You will receive your TSA PreCheck card by mail once your enrollment is complete.

Takeaway: Gather your required documents before your appointment and plan to spend about 15 minutes at the enrollment location. Having everything ready means your visit will go smoothly and quickly.

Scheduling Your Appointment and Planning Your Visit

Most TSA PreCheck enrollment locations require you to schedule an appointment in advance rather than accepting walk-ins. Using the TSA website's enrollment location search, you can view available appointment times and book a slot that works for your schedule. The appointment booking system shows you which dates and times have openings, and you can select the option that fits best into your calendar.

Appointment availability varies by location and season. Popular locations in major cities sometimes fill up weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. If your preferred location and time are not available, you can look at other nearby enrollment centers or check back later for cancellations. Some people set aside specific times during their work week or schedule their enrollment appointment when they know they will be traveling to a city with an enrollment center.

When booking your appointment, you will receive a confirmation with details about where to go, what time to arrive, and what documents to bring. Save this confirmation and review it before your appointment date. Many enrollment locations ask that you arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to allow time for check-in. Arriving early also gives you a buffer in case you encounter traffic or parking delays.

Consider the location's parking and transportation access when scheduling. If you are using public transportation, allow extra time for your trip. If you are driving, check whether the enrollment location has dedicated parking or if you need to use street parking or a parking lot. Weather and traffic patterns in your area may also affect how much time you should allow for getting to your appointment.

Takeaway: Book your appointment well in advance through the TSA website, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, and plan your travel to the location accounting for parking and traffic conditions in your area.
