Understanding Tinnitus: What It Is and How Common It Is in Illinois

Tinnitus is the experience of hearing sound in your ears or head when no external sound is present. People describe it in many ways: a ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, clicking, or whistling sound. The sound may be constant or come and go. It can happen in one ear or both ears. Some people hear it as a low hum, while others experience a high-pitched tone.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), about 15% of the general public experiences tinnitus. That means roughly 1.9 million people in Illinois may deal with tinnitus at some point in their lives. The condition is especially common among people over 55 years old and veterans who have experienced noise exposure.

Tinnitus itself is not a disease—it's a symptom. Something else in your body or ear is causing the sound perception. Understanding what triggers your tinnitus is the first step toward finding relief. The causes are varied and sometimes multiple factors combine to create the condition.

Many people worry that tinnitus means they're losing their hearing or have a serious medical problem. While tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss, it can also occur without any hearing damage. Some people with tinnitus have completely normal hearing tests. This doesn't mean the tinnitus isn't real—it simply means the cause may be different from typical noise-related hearing damage.

The impact of tinnitus varies widely. Some people barely notice it and it doesn't affect daily life. Others find it severely disruptive, interfering with sleep, concentration, work, and emotional well-being. How bothersome tinnitus is depends on the person and how their brain processes the sound.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a simple log of when you notice your tinnitus, what it sounds like, and what you were doing when it occurred. This information helps healthcare providers understand your specific situation and may reveal patterns or triggers.

Common Causes of Tinnitus and Risk Factors

Tinnitus has many potential causes, and identifying yours is important because treatment often depends on the underlying reason. Noise exposure is one of the most common causes. Exposure to loud sounds—whether from work environments, loud music, concerts, firearms, or machinery—can damage the inner ear and trigger tinnitus. The damage may be permanent even if you only experience brief exposure.

Age-related hearing loss, called presbycusis, frequently comes with tinnitus. As people age, cells in the inner ear naturally deteriorate. This is especially true for people in Illinois who worked in industrial settings decades ago when hearing protection wasn't always used or available. Approximately one-third of Americans over 65 experience tinnitus.

Earwax buildup can cause tinnitus by blocking sound waves from reaching the inner ear properly. This is one of the most straightforward causes to address, as removing the earwax often stops the tinnitus. Ear infections and fluid in the middle ear can also create similar symptoms.

Certain medications are associated with tinnitus. These include some antibiotics, cancer drugs, diuretics, and high-dose aspirin. If you suspect medication is causing your tinnitus, talk with your doctor—sometimes switching medications helps, though you should never stop taking prescribed medicine without medical guidance.

Head injuries and neck injuries can damage inner ear structures or affect nerve pathways that process sound. Conditions like Ménière's disease, acoustic neuroma, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder can also produce tinnitus. Additionally, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and thyroid problems sometimes contribute to tinnitus development.

Stress and anxiety don't cause tinnitus directly, but they can make it worse. When stressed, muscles tense up, blood pressure rises, and your nervous system becomes more sensitive. People often notice their tinnitus more during stressful periods, creating a cycle where the awareness of tinnitus causes stress, which intensifies the perception of tinnitus.

Practical Takeaway: Write down any medications you take, recent illnesses or injuries, and changes in your health before your first appointment with a healthcare provider. This helps them identify whether something specific triggered your tinnitus.

Medical Evaluation and Diagnosis in Illinois Healthcare Settings

If you're experiencing tinnitus, the first step is visiting a primary care doctor or an ear, nose, and throat specialist (otolaryngologist). In Illinois, you can find these specialists through your health insurance provider's directory or through local hospitals and medical centers. Your doctor will ask detailed questions about when the tinnitus started, what it sounds like, whether it's constant or comes and goes, and how much it bothers you.

The healthcare provider will conduct a physical examination of your ear and may look inside your ear canal using an instrument called an otoscope. They'll check for earwax, infections, or abnormalities. They may also perform simple hearing tests in the office to get a basic sense of your hearing ability.

If needed, your doctor may refer you to an audiologist for formal hearing testing. Audiologists are trained professionals who specialize in hearing and balance. A complete audiological evaluation, called an audiogram, measures how well you hear different pitches and volumes of sound. This test is painless and takes about 30 minutes. In Illinois, many hospital audiology departments and independent hearing clinics offer these services.

Sometimes doctors order imaging tests like MRI or CT scans if they suspect a specific condition like an acoustic neuroma or if tinnitus started suddenly in one ear. Blood tests may also be ordered to check for thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, or other metabolic issues. Not everyone needs these tests—they depend on your specific situation.

Tinnitus matching tests help describe the sound more precisely. An audiologist may play various sounds through headphones and ask you to identify which one matches your tinnitus. Loudness testing measures how loud your tinnitus seems compared to external sounds. These measurements aren't medical diagnoses, but they provide information that guides treatment decisions.

Being evaluated for tinnitus also includes assessing how much it affects your quality of life. Your doctor may ask questions about sleep, mood, concentration, and daily activities. This information helps determine which treatment approaches might help you most.

Practical Takeaway: Before your appointment, note when the tinnitus started, whether it's in one or both ears, and whether it's constant or occasional. Also describe the sound in your own words and rate how much it bothers you on a scale of 1 to 10. This information helps your doctor understand your situation more completely.

Medical and Professional Treatment Options Available in Illinois

Once healthcare providers identify the cause of your tinnitus, several treatment approaches may help. If earwax or infection is the cause, treatment is often straightforward. A doctor can remove earwax safely using specialized tools or irrigation. Ear infections are treated with medication, and once the infection clears, tinnitus frequently resolves.

For tinnitus related to medication, your doctor might adjust your dosage or switch you to a different drug that doesn't cause tinnitus. This requires careful medical judgment, so always discuss this with your prescribing physician.

Sound therapy is a common approach where you use external sounds to mask or distract from tinnitus. This might include white noise machines, fans, nature sounds, or specially designed tinnitus apps. Many people find that masking the tinnitus makes it less bothersome and helps with sleep. Sound machines are inexpensive—often $20 to $100—and can be purchased at stores throughout Illinois or online.

Hearing aids are recommended for people with both hearing loss and tinnitus. Modern hearing aids amplify external sounds, which can reduce the relative loudness of tinnitus. Some hearing aids include built-in tinnitus masking features. In Illinois, hearing aid fittings are available through audiologists and hearing aid dispensers. A complete hearing aid fitting typically costs $1,000 to $6,000 per pair, though some insurance plans provide coverage.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps people change how they think about and react to tinnitus. A therapist helps you understand thought patterns that make tinnitus worse and teaches coping strategies. This approach doesn't make tinnitus go away but helps reduce the emotional distress it causes. Many therap
