Understanding America's Funniest Home Videos Submission Basics

America's Funniest Home Videos (AFV) has been on the air since 1989, making it one of the longest-running television programs in American history. The show features funny, creative, and sometimes surprising video clips submitted by viewers from across the United States and beyond. Each week, the show airs the funniest videos it receives, and viewers vote on their favorites. The videos that rank highest in viewer voting can win prizes ranging from $100 to $20,000, depending on the competition level and episode type.

Understanding how AFV works is the first step toward submitting your own video. The show accepts videos from anyone with a camera and an interesting moment to share. Whether you've captured your pet doing something hilarious, filmed a funny family moment, or recorded an unexpected occurrence, AFV considers submissions from all types of people. The show receives thousands of submissions every month, which means understanding the specific requirements and submission process can help your video stand out among the competition.

AFV operates through both its official website and a mobile application that viewers can download for free. The submission process has become increasingly digital over the years, making it easier than ever to send in your content. Before you film anything or prepare to submit, learning what types of videos the show actually accepts and what the submission requirements entail will save you time and increase your chances of success.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the official America's Funniest Home Videos website to familiarize yourself with the show's format, watch recent episodes, and understand the types of videos that have won in the past. This background knowledge will help you understand what the producers and audience respond to most positively.

Video Content Requirements and Guidelines

AFV has specific rules about what types of videos it will accept for submission. The primary requirement is that your video must be original content that you created or filmed yourself. The show does not accept videos that have been previously broadcast on television, posted on major media outlets, or distributed widely on other platforms before submission. This means that if you've already shared your video on a major website or social media account with significant reach, it may not be suitable for AFV submission.

The show accepts videos that feature people, animals, children, and families in funny situations. Common video categories that have won prizes include pets doing unexpected things, children saying funny things, family moments that went wrong in amusing ways, and creative stunts or performances. Videos featuring physical comedy, surprising animal behavior, clever editing, and unexpected outcomes tend to perform well with audiences. However, AFV explicitly prohibits videos that contain violence, dangerous stunts without professional supervision, excessive profanity, or content that mocks or demeans individuals.

Length requirements for AFV submissions typically fall between 20 seconds and 8 minutes, though shorter videos often perform better. The show prefers content that gets to the funny moment quickly rather than lengthy setup. Video quality matters, but AFV accepts content filmed on smartphones, tablets, and consumer cameras. Professional-grade equipment is not necessary. Your video should be clear enough for viewers to understand what's happening, but the show has historically accepted videos with varying levels of production quality.

AFV also has strict rules about privacy and consent. If your video features people other than yourself, you should have permission from those individuals to submit the video. If your video includes minors, you'll need consent from their parents or guardians. The show takes these requirements seriously, and submissions without proper consent may be rejected or cause legal complications.

Practical Takeaway: Before filming or submitting, write down a simple description of your video and check it against AFV's content guidelines. Ask yourself: Is this original content I created? Does it feature something genuinely funny rather than something mean-spirited? Do I have permission from everyone visible in the video? If you answered yes to all three questions, your video likely meets the basic content requirements.

Technical Specifications and Video Formatting

To submit a video to AFV, you need to understand the technical requirements for file formats and video specifications. The show accepts videos in several common formats including MP4, MOV, AVI, and WMV. Most modern smartphones automatically record videos in formats that AFV accepts, so if you've filmed something on your phone, the format is likely already compatible. However, if you're using older equipment or specialized cameras, checking your file format before submission will prevent rejection or delays.

Video resolution should be at least 720p (1280x720 pixels), though higher resolutions like 1080p (1920x1080) or 4K are acceptable and preferred. If your video was filmed on a smartphone made in the last five years, it almost certainly meets these resolution standards. Older phones or cameras might record in lower resolutions, which could affect whether AFV accepts your submission. Frame rate should be 24 frames per second or higher, which is the standard for most consumer devices.

File size matters for the upload process. AFV's submission system typically accepts files up to 4 gigabytes in size. For most videos under 10 minutes, this won't be a problem. However, if you're submitting a high-resolution video that's several minutes long, the file might approach this limit. If your file is too large, you can compress it using free video editing software available online. Common options include HandBrake (free, cross-platform) or your phone's built-in video editing tools.

Audio quality is also important. Your video should have clear sound that allows viewers to hear what's happening. Background noise is acceptable and often adds to the humor, but extremely muffled or inaudible audio may result in rejection. If you filmed something funny but the audio is unclear, some free video editing software allows you to add text overlays or captions that explain what's happening.

Practical Takeaway: Before uploading, check your video's specifications by right-clicking the file (on Windows) or using "Get Info" (on Mac). Look for resolution (should be 720p or higher), file format (MP4 is safest), and file size (should be under 4GB). If your video doesn't meet these specs, use a free online video converter or editing tool to adjust the format or compression before submission.

Step-by-Step Submission Process

The AFV submission process has become streamlined over recent years, with the official website offering the most direct method for submitting your video. To begin, visit the official America's Funniest Home Videos website and look for the "Submit Your Video" or "Submissions" section. The website typically features a prominent button or link directing you to the submission portal. This portal is where you'll upload your video file and provide the required information about your submission.

Once you've accessed the submission portal, you'll need to create an account or sign in if you already have one. During account creation, you'll provide your name, email address, mailing address, and phone number. AFV requires this information so they can contact you if your video is selected for broadcast or wins a prize. Make sure your contact information is accurate and that you check the email account you provide regularly, as initial contact about video selection often comes through email.

After your account is set up, you'll upload your video file. The submission system typically shows a progress bar as your video uploads, and the time this takes depends on your internet connection speed and file size. A 100-megabyte file might take a few minutes on a standard home internet connection, while larger files take longer. Using a wired internet connection rather than Wi-Fi can speed up uploads. Once the upload completes, you'll see a confirmation message.

Next, you'll provide details about your video. This includes a title, a brief description of what happens in the video (typically 50 to 200 words), and information about who filmed it and who appears in it. You'll also answer questions about whether the content is original and whether you have permission from anyone featured in the video. Answer these questions honestly, as providing false information can result in your submission being rejected or removed from consideration.

After submitting all required information, you'll receive a confirmation email at the address you provided during account creation. Keep this confirmation email and save your submission number, as you may need it if you have questions about your submission status. AFV typically reviews submissions within a few weeks, though this timeline can vary depending on volume.

Practical Takeaway: Before starting the submission process, gather all required information: your video file on your computer or phone, your full contact information, a title for your video, a written description of what happens, and confirmation that you have permission from everyone featured.
