Free Guide to Stopping Robocalls on Your Phone

Understanding Robocalls and Why They're a Problem

Robocalls are automated telephone calls that deliver a recorded message rather than connecting you to a live person. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reports that Americans receive billions of robocalls annually, with estimates suggesting over 4 billion robocalls placed in the United States each month. These calls use technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) that allows callers to make calls through the internet instead of traditional phone lines, making it inexpensive and difficult to trace.

Robocalls fall into different categories. Some are legitimate, such as appointment reminders from your doctor's office, package delivery notifications from shipping companies, or school closure announcements from your local district. However, many robocalls are scams designed to steal personal information, money, or both. Common fraudulent robocall schemes include claims about credit card debt, Social Security number suspension, tax refunds, car warranties, and mortgage refinancing.

The danger extends beyond annoyance. Scammers use robocalls to commit identity theft, which the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identified as the top consumer complaint category for multiple years running. When someone falls victim to a robocall scam, the consequences can include fraudulent charges, damaged credit scores, and years of recovery work. Seniors are particularly targeted, with adults over 65 losing more than $1 billion annually to telephone fraud according to the FTC.

Understanding how robocalls operate and why they're prevalent is the foundation for protecting yourself. Knowing that scammers use spoofing technology to mask their real phone numbers—making calls appear to come from local numbers or trusted organizations—helps explain why a call claiming to be from your bank might look legitimate on your caller ID.

Practical Takeaway: Keep track of robocalls you receive for one week. Note the time, number, and message content. This log will help you identify patterns and determine which calls are legitimate versus fraudulent.

How to Recognize Robocall Scams and Protect Your Information

Recognizing robocall scams requires understanding the common warning signs and tactics scammers use. Most robocall scams share identifiable characteristics that, once you learn them, become easier to spot. The FTC has documented thousands of robocall scam reports, creating detailed profiles of how these schemes work.

Common red flags include pressure to act immediately, requests for personal information like your Social Security number or bank details, and threats of legal action or arrest. For example, a scammer might claim to be from the IRS and state that you owe back taxes, threatening that law enforcement will be contacted if you don't pay immediately. In reality, the IRS never initiates contact via phone for tax debts, always starting with a mailed letter.

Another prevalent scam involves fake warranty alerts. You receive a call claiming your vehicle warranty is expiring and you must press a button or call a number to extend it. The caller then tries to access your computer or obtain payment information. Car manufacturers and legitimate warranty companies don't operate this way—they contact you through traditional mail if there's an issue with your coverage.

Scammers also impersonate banks, credit card companies, and software companies. They might claim there's fraudulent activity on your account and request that you verify your account number, PIN, or password. Legitimate companies have procedures that never involve providing sensitive information over the phone to someone who called you unsolicited.

The most important protective measure is understanding that legitimate organizations will never ask you to provide sensitive personal or financial information during an unsolicited phone call. If you're uncertain whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact the organization directly using a phone number you find independently—not one provided by the caller.

Practical Takeaway: Create a simple reference card listing which organizations actually contact you by phone (your bank, doctor's office, etc.) and which never do. Refer to this when you receive calls claiming to be from financial institutions or government agencies.

Built-In Phone Features and Settings to Reduce Robocalls

Modern smartphones include several built-in features designed to filter and block unwanted calls. These tools don't cost money and are worth understanding, as they form the first line of defense against robocalls.

Both iPhone and Android devices offer call filtering features. On iPhones, the "Filter Unknown Callers" option silences calls from people not in your contacts, placing them in the recent calls list instead. To enable this, go to Phone settings, select Call Filtering, and toggle on "Filter Unknown Callers." This prevents interruptions from unfamiliar numbers while still allowing you to review and return important calls if needed.

Android phones have similar functionality through the Phone app settings. The "Spam and Call Screen" feature, available on many Android devices, automatically screens suspected spam calls and can send them to voicemail. Some Android phones also allow you to see a transcription of voicemail messages, so you can determine if a call is worth returning without listening to the full recording.

Do Not Disturb settings on both iPhone and Android allow you to block calls from numbers not in your contacts while still receiving calls from favorite contacts or family members. You can schedule this feature to activate during certain hours, such as evenings or weekends, and create exceptions for important people. This way, you eliminate robocall interruptions while maintaining connection with people who matter to you.

Call blocking features let you manually block specific numbers after receiving unwanted calls. When you block a number on iPhone, calls and messages from that contact go straight to voicemail. On Android, blocked callers typically see a "Call Failed" message. While manually blocking individual numbers doesn't stop new robocalls from different numbers, it reduces contact with persistent scammers targeting your line.

Practical Takeaway: Spend 15 minutes this week exploring your phone's built-in call filtering settings. Enable the features that match your communication needs—such as filtering unknown callers or activating Do Not Disturb during evening hours. Test the features with a friend to understand how they work before relying on them.

Third-Party Apps and Services That Block Robocalls

Beyond built-in phone features, several third-party applications specialize in blocking robocalls and identifying suspicious numbers. These apps work by comparing incoming calls against databases of known scam numbers and using algorithms to identify likely spam calls. Many are offered at no cost to users, though some provide optional paid versions with additional features.

Popular free robocall blocking apps include TrueCaller, RoboKiller, and Nomorobo. TrueCaller maintains one of the largest databases of phone numbers, with over 500 million phone numbers identified and categorized. The app shows you who's calling before you answer and blocks numbers identified as spam or scam. RoboKiller uses audio fingerprinting technology to identify robocall patterns and blocks calls before they reach you; it also offers the option to "answer" robocalls with recorded messages that confuse scammers into removing your number from their list.

Nomorobo operates through a different model—it's a service you can register your number with for free, and it automatically blocks calls identified as robocalls before they reach your phone. The service also maintains a "Nomorobo Robocall Index" that tracks which types of robocalls are most prevalent week to week, providing insights into current scam trends.

When choosing a third-party app, consider what permissions it requires and how it handles your data. Reputable apps should clearly explain what information they collect and how they use it. Read user reviews on app stores to understand how effectively the app works in your region—effectiveness varies by location since different scams target different areas.

One important consideration is that third-party apps can occasionally block legitimate calls if they're misidentified as spam. You should review your blocked calls periodically to ensure important numbers haven't been filtered. Set a monthly reminder to check your app's blocked call list and whitelist any numbers you recognize as legitimate.

Practical Takeaway: Download and install one third-party robocall blocking app that matches your phone type (iPhone or Android). Set up the app following its instructions, and configure any available settings to match your preferences. Note your app's customer support contact information in case you need to report legitimate numbers that were incorrectly blocked.
