How Medicare Card Scams Work: Common Tactics Criminals Use

Medicare card scams are among the most common fraud schemes targeting older adults. According to the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, there were over 60,000 complaints related to Medicare fraud in a recent year. Scammers target people on Medicare because they have active healthcare accounts and access to sensitive personal information.

One of the most prevalent tactics is the phone call scam. A person calls claiming to be from Medicare, Social Security, or a related government agency. They say your Medicare card has been suspended, compromised, or needs to be "verified" due to suspicious activity. The caller creates a sense of urgency by suggesting your benefits will be cut off if you don't act. They then ask for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or banking information to "reactivate" your card or "confirm your identity."

Another common approach involves text messages or emails. These communications claim to come from Medicare and include a link to click or a phone number to call. The message might say something like "Your Medicare card has unusual activity" or "We need to update your information." When you click the link, you're taken to a fake website that looks nearly identical to the real Medicare.gov site. People enter their personal information thinking they're logging into an official account.

Door-to-door scams also happen regularly. Someone shows up at your home wearing an official-looking badge or uniform, claiming to represent Medicare, Social Security, or a health insurance company. They say they need to scan your Medicare card, collect updated information, or sign you up for a new program. Some scammers pose as representatives from pharmacies or medical equipment companies offering free items—but they really want your card number and banking details.

Practical takeaway: Real Medicare representatives will never call you out of the blue asking for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or banking information. The official Medicare phone number is 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), and you should call this number yourself if you have questions—never call a number from an unsolicited message.

Red Flags That Signal a Potential Scam

Learning to spot warning signs can help protect your Medicare information and identity. Scammers often give themselves away through suspicious behavior or pressure tactics.

Unsolicited contact is a major red flag. If someone calls, texts, or emails you about your Medicare card without you contacting them first, be cautious. Medicare will never initiate contact to ask for your Medicare number or personal information. If you're unsure whether a message is legitimate, hang up or close the message and call Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227 using the phone number on your official Medicare card. This ensures you're calling the real government agency, not a number the scammer provided.

Requests for immediate action are another warning sign. Scammers create pressure by saying "your benefits expire today," "we're canceling your card in 24 hours," or "you must verify information right now." Real government agencies don't work this way. They mail official notices and give you time to respond. If someone is pressuring you to act immediately, that's a strong indication of a scam.

Requests for sensitive information should raise concerns. Your Medicare card contains your Medicare number, which is now the same as your Social Security number. Legitimate representatives should never ask you to share this over the phone, text, or email. Similarly, real Medicare staff won't ask for your banking information, credit card numbers, or passwords. The only time you should provide sensitive information is when you initiate contact with a verified Medicare office.

Grammar and spelling errors in communications can signal a scam. Official government messages are carefully reviewed and typically have no mistakes. If an email or text from "Medicare" contains poor grammar, misspellings, or awkward phrasing, it's likely fraudulent. Additionally, be suspicious of generic greetings like "Dear Customer" instead of using your actual name.

Unfamiliar links and attachments are dangerous. Scammers send emails or texts with links that look like they go to Medicare.gov but actually lead to fake websites. Don't click links in unsolicited messages. Instead, type Medicare.gov directly into your web browser. Similarly, don't open attachments from unknown senders, as they may contain malware that steals personal information from your device.

Offers that seem too good to be true warrant skepticism. If someone offers free medical equipment, prescriptions, or health services in exchange for your Medicare number, it's likely a scam. Scammers use these offers as bait to collect personal information they can sell or use for identity theft.

Practical takeaway: When in doubt, hang up or delete the message and contact Medicare yourself using the official number on your Medicare card. This single action can prevent identity theft and fraud.

What Scammers Do With Your Information

Understanding what happens after you give up your information helps explain why Medicare card scams are so serious. When scammers obtain your Medicare number and other personal details, they use that information in several damaging ways.

Medicare fraud and billing is the most common use of stolen Medicare information. Scammers use your Medicare number to submit false claims to Medicare for medical services, equipment, or prescriptions you never received. For example, they might bill Medicare for expensive wheelchairs, diabetic testing supplies, or physical therapy sessions. Because these claims appear to come from your Medicare number, you might not notice immediately. Meanwhile, scammers get paid by Medicare for services that never happened.

Identity theft is another serious consequence. With your Medicare number (which is tied to your Social Security number), personal name, address, and date of birth, scammers can open credit card accounts in your name, take out loans, or establish utility accounts. The bills go to an address you don't monitor, and by the time you realize something is wrong, significant damage has been done to your credit. Some people don't discover identity theft until they apply for credit themselves and learn about accounts they never opened.

Insurance fraud perpetrated under your identity is also common. Scammers might use your Medicare information to file false insurance claims for family members or other people. These fraudulent claims create a record on your account and can complicate your legitimate healthcare coverage.

Personal information resale is another problem. Some scammers sell stolen Medicare and personal information to other criminals on the dark web. Your data might be bought and sold multiple times, each time potentially being used for different schemes.

Medical identity theft specifically involves scammers using your identity to obtain medical services, prescription medications, or health insurance benefits. This can create false medical records under your name, potentially interfering with your legitimate healthcare. For instance, if a scammer receives prescription painkillers using your identity, a medical record of addiction could be created in your name, affecting future healthcare decisions.

Tax return fraud can also occur. With your Social Security number, someone might file a false tax return in your name to claim fraudulent refunds. You might only discover this when you attempt to file your own return.

Practical takeaway: If you believe your Medicare information has been compromised, contact Medicare immediately at 1-800-633-4227 to report it, and consider placing a fraud alert with the credit bureaus to prevent identity theft.
