The Companion Pass has been a popular feature in Southwest's rewards program for many years. When you hold this pass, you can designate one person as your companion, and that person can travel with you on Southwest flights without paying the base fare. The companion still needs to pay taxes and fees, which typically range from $5.60 to $13.20 per flight segment, but they avoid paying the regular ticket price that other passengers pay.

It's important to understand that this is not a free ticket in the traditional sense. The pass is tied to your account, and the benefits only apply when you are the one purchasing and using the ticket. If your companion wants to travel without you, they cannot use the pass independently. The pass works on a per-trip basis, meaning you need to purchase your own ticket first, and then you can add your companion at the reduced rate.

The pass typically remains valid through the end of the calendar year in which you obtain it, plus all of the following calendar year. This means the timing of when you obtain the pass affects how long you can use it. Someone who gets the pass in January has access to it for roughly 23 months, while someone who gets it in December has access for roughly 13 months.

Practical Takeaway: The Companion Pass works by letting one designated person travel with you on Southwest flights while you pay your fare and they pay only taxes and fees. Understanding the timeline of the pass and how long it remains active is crucial for planning travel.

How You Can Obtain the Companion Pass

There are several ways people obtain the Southwest Companion Pass. The most common method involves the Southwest credit card. When someone opens a Southwest credit card account and meets the card's spending requirements, they typically receive the Companion Pass as a reward. Different Southwest credit card products have different spending thresholds, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 in purchases within the first few months of card ownership.

Another way to obtain the pass involves the Rapid Rewards program itself. Southwest's frequent flyer program allows members to accumulate points through flights and other activities. In some cases, members can earn enough points to redeem for the Companion Pass directly, though this typically requires a substantial number of points—often 110,000 points or more, depending on the program's current structure.

A third method involves completing specific actions within Southwest's Rapid Rewards program. Occasionally, the airline offers promotions where members who complete certain actions—such as taking a particular number of flights or reaching a status tier—receive the Companion Pass as part of the promotion.

Timing matters when it comes to obtaining the pass. Since the pass is calendar-year based, people who want to maximize the value often time their applications or redemptions strategically. Someone who obtains the pass late in the year will have fewer months to use it before it expires than someone who obtains it early in the year.

It's worth noting that different methods of obtaining the pass may come with different terms. For instance, a credit card may require maintaining the account to retain the pass, while points-based redemptions may not have ongoing requirements. Understanding the terms associated with however you obtain the pass is important for maintaining your ability to use it.

Practical Takeaway: The Companion Pass can be obtained through a Southwest credit card, through the Rapid Rewards points program, or through special promotions. Each method has different requirements and timelines, so research which method fits your situation.

Rules and Restrictions You Should Know

The Companion Pass comes with several important rules that travelers need to understand. First, you must be present on the flight with your companion for the pass to be used. You cannot give your companion a free ticket to travel alone. Both you and your companion must be booked on the same flight using the pass benefit.

Second, the companion must be designated in advance. You cannot change your companion frequently or casually. The person listed as your companion is generally the only person who can travel with you under the pass. While some circumstances allow you to change your designated companion, this is not something you can do for every trip.

Third, the pass applies only to base fares. Your companion does not get free seating upgrades or free early boarding. They pay the standard boarding fees if they want to upgrade their boarding position. Any additional services or upgrades beyond the base fare are the companion's responsibility to pay for.

Fourth, blackout dates may apply. Southwest occasionally restricts when the Companion Pass can be used, particularly during peak travel periods such as holidays or major events. You need to check Southwest's calendar to see when restrictions are in place before booking flights.

Fifth, the pass is non-transferable. You cannot sell it, give it to someone else, or transfer it to another account. The pass is tied to your Rapid Rewards account and can only be used by you as the primary traveler.

• You must travel with your companion on the same flight
• Your companion is designated in advance and cannot be changed frequently
• Only the base fare is covered; taxes, fees, and upgrades are separate
• Blackout dates may restrict when the pass can be used
• The pass cannot be transferred to another person or account

Practical Takeaway: Understanding these restrictions helps you plan realistic travel using the pass. The most important point is that you must travel with your designated companion on the same flight for the benefit to work.

Choosing Your Companion Strategically

Deciding who to designate as your companion is one of the most important decisions when you have the Companion Pass. This person will be the one who travels with you under the pass benefit. While you can change your companion in certain circumstances, it's not a simple process, so thinking carefully about this decision makes sense.

Many people choose a family member as their companion. This might be a spouse, a child, a parent, or a sibling. Choosing a family member makes sense if that person travels with you frequently or if you anticipate taking multiple trips together during the period the pass is active.

Some people choose a close friend or partner. If you frequently travel with someone outside your immediate family, designating them as your companion allows you to save money on those trips together.

The key is to think about who you're most likely to travel with over the next year or so. If you plan to take six trips and four of them will include the same travel companion, that person would be a logical choice. On the other hand, if your travel plans are unpredictable or if you travel with different people on different trips, choosing a companion becomes more complicated.

It's worth considering whether the person you choose will actually take advantage of the pass. If you designate someone who rarely travels, the pass may go unused. Conversely, if you designate someone who loves to travel, the pass could represent significant savings across multiple trips.

Some people in the industry suggest thinking about who will travel with you the most over a 12 to 24-month period. If you can identify someone you're likely to take at least three or four trips with during that time, that person is probably a good choice for your companion.

Practical Takeaway: Choose your companion based on who you're most likely to travel with regularly during the pass's validity period. Think about your actual travel plans rather than hypothetical scenarios.

Maximizing the Financial Value of Your Pass

The Companion Pass can represent substantial savings, but the actual value depends on how you use it. A cross-country flight on Southwest might normally cost $300 to $400 or more. If your companion takes four such flights using the pass, the savings could total $1,200 to $1,600 or more in airfare.

To maximize value, consider booking flights during periods when Southwest fares are typically higher. Premium travel periods—such as holidays, spring break, and summer vacation—generally have higher fares. Using your companion pass during these high-price periods means your companion avoids paying those premium prices.

Distance matters too. The longer the flight, the higher the typical fare. A
