Free Guide to Southwest Airlines Checked Bag Rules

Understanding Southwest Airlines Checked Bag Policy Basics

Southwest Airlines has maintained one of the most passenger-friendly checked bag policies in the U.S. airline industry for decades. Unlike most major carriers, Southwest does not charge fees for the first two checked bags on domestic flights. This policy applies to all passengers, regardless of ticket type or frequent flyer status, making it a significant difference compared to competitors like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, which typically charge $30-$40 for the first checked bag and $40-$50 for a second bag.

The first checked bag must weigh no more than 50 pounds and have dimensions not exceeding 62 inches total (length plus width plus height). The second checked bag follows the same weight and size restrictions. These measurements are important to understand because oversized or overweight bags can result in additional fees, even though the first two bags themselves are free. For example, a bag weighing 51 pounds would incur an overage fee of $100, making it crucial to use a scale before heading to the airport.

Southwest's policy covers domestic flights within the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For international flights from the continental U.S. to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, the same two free checked bags policy applies. However, flights to Hawaii and Alaska follow different rules, with the first checked bag remaining free but the second bag costing $35.

The airline's checked bag policy is available on their website and at airport ticket counters. Passengers can review baggage rules during the booking process or up to 24 hours before departure. Understanding these baseline rules helps travelers plan their luggage needs and avoid unexpected expenses.

Practical Takeaway: Weigh your bags before arriving at the airport and note their dimensions. The first two checked bags under 50 pounds travel free on most Southwest flights, but oversized or overweight bags trigger additional charges.

Size and Weight Requirements You Need to Know

Southwest Airlines enforces specific dimensional and weight limits to ensure baggage handling safety and consistency across their fleet. Each checked bag cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight or 62 inches in total dimension measurements. The 62-inch measurement combines length plus width plus height—so a bag measuring 24 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 20 inches high would total 62 inches exactly, which meets the requirement.

Many travelers underestimate how quickly bags exceed the 62-inch limit. A standard hard-sided suitcase measuring 27 inches tall, 20 inches wide, and 11 inches deep already totals 58 inches, leaving minimal room for variations. Soft-sided luggage can sometimes compress below the limit when empty, but filling it expands the dimensions. Using a luggage scale at home is important because airport scales may vary slightly, and a bag that weighs 50.5 pounds could be flagged as overweight.

For bags exceeding the standard limits, Southwest allows checking oversized baggage for an additional $100 per bag. Oversized bags can weigh up to 100 pounds and measure up to 80 inches in total dimension. This option exists for travelers with special needs, such as those transporting sports equipment, musical instruments, or extensive luggage. Golf clubs, skis, and surfboards typically qualify as oversized baggage requiring the additional fee.

Items that cannot be checked at all include firearms (which require special handling and declarations), hazardous materials, and certain electronic devices. Passengers should review Southwest's prohibited items list before packing. The list includes everyday items that many people don't realize are restricted, such as lighter fluid, certain batteries, and some types of tools.

Practical Takeaway: Invest in a portable luggage scale and measure your bags' dimensions (length + width + height). Keep bags under 50 pounds and 62 inches to avoid the $100 oversized baggage fee.

How the Two Free Checked Bags Work in Practice

Southwest's two free checked bags policy applies to all passengers holding a ticket, whether they booked economy fares or premium cabin seats. This inclusion differs from other airlines where free checked bags depend on ticket class, frequent flyer status, or credit card membership. A passenger flying Southwest on the cheapest available fare receives the same two free checked bags as a Business Select ticket holder.

The two bags must be checked at the ticket counter or bag drop desk before security. Passengers cannot designate which bags they want to check—the airline checks them in the order presented at the counter. For example, if a traveler brings three bags but only wants to check two, they should keep the third bag and bring it to the gate as a carry-on item (subject to carry-on baggage restrictions). The airline staff processes bags sequentially, so checking bags at the counter takes a few minutes per bag.

Group travel can sometimes create confusion about checked bag allowances. If a family of four travels together, each person receives two free checked bags. A family of four can therefore check up to eight bags free of charge, provided each individual passenger's bags meet weight and size requirements. This feature makes Southwest particularly economical for families or groups traveling with substantial luggage needs.

On connecting flights, checked bags travel through to the final destination automatically. Passengers do not need to retrieve and recheck bags during layovers. However, if a passenger holds separate tickets for each flight segment (not a single through-booking), each ticket provides two free checked bags. Understanding ticket structure prevents confusion about baggage counts.

Practical Takeaway: Each passenger receives two free checked bags regardless of ticket price. On a multi-leg journey with a single booking, bags transfer through to your final destination without retrieval at layovers.

Additional Baggage Fees and Special Circumstances

While Southwest's first two checked bags travel free, additional bags and oversized items incur fees. A third checked bag costs $45, a fourth checked bag costs $50, and each additional bag beyond that costs $50 per bag. A traveler checking five bags would pay $45 for the third bag plus $50 each for the fourth and fifth bags, totaling $145 in additional baggage fees. These fees apply per flight segment, so a round trip would involve paying fees for additional bags on both the outbound and return flights.

Oversized baggage weighing between 50 and 100 pounds, or measuring between 62 and 80 inches in total dimension, costs $100 per bag. Items such as golf clubs, fishing equipment, and musical instruments often fall into this category. A passenger traveling with a full-size cello, for example, would need to pay the $100 oversized baggage fee on top of any checked bag allowance, even if they were only checking that single item.

Special sports equipment and musical instruments have specific handling procedures. Bicycles must be either checked as luggage or placed in a bike box/case for transport. Southwest does not charge an additional fee for a bicycle packed in a standard checked baggage-size box, meaning it can count as one of the two free checked bags. However, an unboxed bicycle cannot be transported. Musical instruments such as guitars or violins can be checked or carried on board in a protective case, provided they fit within carry-on dimensions.

Passengers with disabilities have protections under the Air Carrier Access Act. Service animals (dogs trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities) can accompany passengers at no charge and do not count toward baggage allowance. Emotional support animals are not recognized as service animals under federal aviation regulations and would need to be checked as baggage if they cannot fit in a carrier under the seat.

Practical Takeaway: Budget $45-$50 for any third checked bag and $100 for oversized items. Special equipment like bicycles in protective cases may count as a regular checked bag instead of triggering additional fees.

Luggage Restrictions and Prohibited Items

Certain items cannot be checked on any flight, regardless of how they are packed. Hazardous materials represent the broadest category of prohibited items. These include flammable liquids like lighter fluid, paint thinner, and gasoline; certain batteries such as lithium batteries in quantities over regulatory limits; and corrosive materials. Even items that seem harmless, like nail polish remover or certain cleaning products, are classified as hazardous and cannot be transported in checked baggage.
