Free Guide to Southwest Airlines Baggage Policy Changes

Understanding Southwest Airlines' Baggage Policy Basics

Southwest Airlines maintains one of the most permissive baggage policies in the U.S. airline industry. Unlike many competitors, Southwest allows passengers to check two bags at no additional charge on most flights. This policy has remained largely consistent for over two decades, though recent changes have affected certain passenger categories.

The airline's baggage allowance includes one carry-on bag and one personal item for all passengers, regardless of ticket type. A personal item typically includes a purse, laptop bag, backpack, or small briefcase. Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Southwest doesn't charge for these items, and passengers can bring them onto the aircraft without additional fees.

The two free checked bags represent a significant savings compared to other major carriers. American Airlines, Delta, and United typically charge $30 for the first checked bag and $40 for the second on most domestic flights. For a family of four taking a one-week vacation, this difference equals $240 to $560 in additional fees with competing airlines.

However, Southwest has introduced modifications to this policy affecting specific groups. As of 2024, passengers with certain fare types no longer receive free checked baggage. The airline now distinguishes between different booking categories, with "Wanna Get Away" fares receiving different baggage treatment than higher-tier purchases.

Practical takeaway: Before booking a Southwest flight, review your specific fare type in the confirmation email. Look for baggage allowance details in your reservation confirmation, as not all Southwest fares include the same checked bag privileges.

Recent Policy Changes Affecting Different Fare Types

Southwest's most significant recent change involves the introduction of fare restrictions on baggage. Historically, all passengers received two free checked bags regardless of price paid. Beginning in late 2023 and continuing into 2024, the airline modified this approach for the lowest-priced "Wanna Get Away" fares purchased on some routes.

The "Wanna Get Away" fare category now carries different baggage policies depending on when and where you book. Passengers purchasing these tickets through Southwest.com or in-person typically retain one free checked bag. However, passengers booking through third-party travel websites may receive no free checked bags. This creates confusion for budget-conscious travelers who believe they're getting the same Southwest experience at a lower price.

Mid-tier fares, branded as "Wanna Get Away Plus," continue to include two free checked bags, priority boarding, and other benefits. These tickets cost approximately $20 to $50 more per passenger than base "Wanna Get Away" fares, depending on the route and travel date. Business Select fares, Southwest's premium option, include all baggage benefits plus early boarding, priority seating, and free alcoholic beverages.

The reasoning behind these changes reflects industry trends toward segmentation. Airlines have observed that budget-conscious passengers prioritize price above all else, while leisure travelers value convenience. By creating different baggage allowances for different fare types, Southwest generates additional revenue from price-sensitive customers while maintaining competitive advantages for higher-paying passengers.

These changes have been gradual rather than sudden. Southwest has not eliminated baggage fees but rather created conditions where certain booking methods result in baggage charges. This approach differs from competitors who simply increased baggage fees across the board.

Practical takeaway: When comparing Southwest prices to competitors, factor in potential baggage fees. A "Wanna Get Away" fare that appears $40 cheaper becomes less attractive if you'll pay $35 for a checked bag. Always review the baggage policy details before completing any purchase.

Baggage Fees and Special Item Charges

Southwest's fee structure for baggage has expanded beyond the traditional two free checked bags. The airline now charges for items that were previously included or assesses fees in circumstances that previously carried no charge.

Third and subsequent checked bags incur fees of $45 for the third bag, $50 for the fourth bag, and $100 for the fifth and sixth bags. These fees apply to all passengers regardless of fare type. In practice, this means a family checking more than two bags per person faces substantial additional costs. A family of three traveling for two weeks with three bags per person would pay $235 in checked baggage fees ($45 + $50 + $100 per person).

Oversized baggage—typically defined as items exceeding 62 inches in length, width, and height combined—costs $75. This restriction primarily affects passengers traveling with surfboards, large instrument cases, bicycles, or other specialty equipment. Southwest measures items based on the total linear dimensions, meaning a bag that is 30 inches by 20 inches by 15 inches would total 65 inches and be considered oversized.

Overweight baggage, defined as items exceeding 50 pounds, carries a $75 charge per bag. Bags weighing between 50 and 100 pounds incur this single fee. Southwest does not allow checked baggage exceeding 100 pounds. This policy particularly affects passengers traveling with heavy sporting equipment, multiple pairs of shoes, or individuals packing for extended international trips.

Special items including pets, golf clubs, and ski equipment fall into different categories with varying fees. Pets in cabin (cats and dogs only) cost $95 per direction. Golf clubs incur $20 per direction. Skis and snowboards with a boot bag cost $20 per direction. A passenger traveling with a dog and ski equipment to a winter vacation would pay $230 in special fees alone ($95 each way for the pet, $20 each way for skis).

Practical takeaway: Carefully weigh and measure all checked items before arriving at the airport. Measure bags using length plus width plus height. Weigh items on a home scale to avoid expensive overweight charges. If traveling with special equipment, research the specific fee category rather than assuming your items fall within standard baggage allowances.

How Frequent Flyer Status Impacts Baggage Rules

Southwest Rapid Rewards frequent flyer members receive enhanced baggage benefits at certain status levels. The program operates on a point-based system where passengers earn points through flights and credit card spending. Status levels include A-List, A-List Preferred, and Companion Pass holders, each with different perks.

A-List members, who achieve status by flying 25 qualifying one-way flights or earning 50,000 qualifying points annually, receive benefits including priority boarding and free in-flight beverages. However, A-List status does not provide additional baggage allowances beyond standard policy. An A-List member purchasing a "Wanna Get Away" fare that excludes checked baggage will still face baggage fees despite their elite status.

A-List Preferred members, achieved at 70 qualifying one-way flights or 120,000 qualifying points annually, receive similar baggage treatment to standard A-List members. Their primary advantage is priority boarding positioning and other perks, not baggage allowances.

The exception involves Companion Pass holders, a benefit occasionally offered through credit card promotions or special promotions. Companion Pass allows one designated companion to fly free on most Southwest flights for one year. These companions receive the same baggage benefits as the primary ticket holder, but this benefit depends on the original ticket type.

Southwest has been gradually shifting benefits toward credit card holders rather than frequent flyer status. The Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card, when used for ticket purchases, provides additional benefits including anniversary bonuses and points multipliers. However, the card itself does not guarantee additional baggage allowances.

The airline's strategy reflects industry movement toward monetizing elite status. Rather than providing direct baggage benefits, status members receive priority access to boarding positions and other services. This approach pressures high-frequency flyers toward premium fare purchases to maintain traditional baggage benefits.

Practical takeaway: Don't assume frequent flyer status automatically includes baggage benefits. Verify your specific status level and its actual baggage perks before booking. If you rely on free checked bags, purchase Business Select fares or higher-tier ticket categories rather than depending on status alone.

Booking Strategies to Maximize Baggage Benefits

Understanding where and how you book significantly impacts baggage outcomes. Southwest's official website (Southwest.com) provides the most complete baggage information and typically offers the most favorable baggage terms for all fare types.
