Understanding Skin Cancer and Why Testing Matters

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 2 million cases of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year. Additionally, approximately 100,000 new cases of melanoma—the most serious form of skin cancer—are detected annually. These numbers highlight why regular skin screening has become an important part of preventive health care for many people.

Skin cancer develops when cells in the skin grow abnormally, often due to damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. The disease can appear anywhere on the body, though it most commonly develops on areas that receive sun exposure. Early detection plays a significant role in treatment outcomes. When skin cancer is identified in its early stages, treatment options tend to be simpler and less invasive than when the disease has progressed.

Testing for skin cancer involves visual examination and sometimes tissue sampling. Different types of skin cancer present different warning signs. Knowing what to look for can help you recognize changes in your skin that may warrant professional evaluation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that adults perform monthly self-examinations of their skin and seek professional screening as part of routine health care.

This guide explores the various testing options currently available to help you understand how skin cancer screening works, what types of tests exist, and where you might pursue testing. The information presented here is designed to help you understand your options and make informed conversations with medical professionals about your skin health.

Practical Takeaway: Skin cancer is common and treatable when caught early. Learning about testing options is a helpful first step in understanding your skin health.

Types of Skin Cancer and How They Appear

Three main types of skin cancer account for the vast majority of diagnoses: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Understanding the differences between these types can help you recognize changes in your skin that might warrant testing.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently diagnosed form, accounting for approximately 80 percent of all skin cancer cases. BCC typically develops on sun-exposed areas, particularly the face, ears, and neck. It often appears as a waxy, translucent bump, sometimes with visible blood vessels, or as a flat, scaly patch. BCC grows slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but it should still be treated to prevent it from growing deeper into the skin and causing tissue damage.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) makes up roughly 20 percent of skin cancer diagnoses. Like BCC, it typically appears on sun-exposed areas but can develop anywhere on the skin. SCC often looks like a firm, red bump or a scaly patch that may bleed or ooze. It tends to grow faster than BCC and has a slightly higher risk of spreading to lymph nodes or other parts of the body if left untreated, though this remains relatively uncommon when the cancer is caught early.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, though it accounts for only about 1 percent of all skin cancer cases. It develops from melanocytes, the cells that produce skin pigment. Melanoma can appear as a new spot on the skin or as a change to an existing mole. The American Academy of Dermatology describes the "ABCDE" warning signs: Asymmetry (one half doesn't match the other), Border irregularity, Color variation within the spot, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving (changing in size, shape, or color). Melanoma can spread to other organs, making early detection particularly important.

Non-melanoma skin cancers (BCC and SCC combined) have cure rates exceeding 95 percent when treated in early stages. Melanoma survival rates also improve dramatically with early detection—the five-year survival rate for melanoma detected at Stage 1 is approximately 99 percent, compared to about 63 percent for Stage 3 melanoma, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Practical Takeaway: Knowing what each type of skin cancer looks like helps you recognize changes worth discussing with a medical professional during testing.

Self-Examination and At-Home Monitoring

Self-examination is one of the most accessible testing options and serves as an important first step in skin health monitoring. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that adults perform skin self-checks monthly, ideally in front of a full-length mirror in good lighting. This routine doesn't require any special equipment or cost—only a few minutes of time each month.

During a self-examination, you should check your entire body, including areas that don't typically receive sun exposure. Many people overlook less obvious areas like the soles of feet, between toes, the scalp (if you have hair loss or part your hair differently), behind the ears, the back of the neck, and the genital area. These locations can develop skin cancer just as easily as sun-exposed areas. You may want to use a handheld mirror to examine hard-to-reach spots, and some people find it helpful to have a partner or family member check their back.

The ABCDE rule provides a framework for identifying concerning changes in existing moles or new growths. Beyond these signs, you should also watch for any spot that itches, bleeds, or doesn't heal within a reasonable timeframe. Changes over time are often more significant than the appearance of a spot itself. Taking photographs of questionable areas at monthly intervals can help you track changes more objectively than relying on memory.

At-home dermoscopy devices represent an emerging technology for self-examination. These handheld tools magnify skin lesions and sometimes use specialized lighting or image analysis software. Some devices capture images that can be shared with dermatologists for remote review. However, these tools vary in accuracy and should not replace professional examination. Research published in dermatology journals indicates that while some at-home devices show promise, their reliability depends on the specific device and the user's ability to use it correctly.

Self-examination has clear limitations—it cannot definitively diagnose skin cancer. However, it serves an important role in early detection by prompting people to seek professional evaluation when they notice changes. Studies indicate that individuals who perform regular self-examinations tend to identify skin cancer at earlier stages than those who don't monitor their skin.

Practical Takeaway: Monthly self-examinations at home can help you identify changes worth bringing to a medical professional's attention during a formal skin cancer test.

Professional Skin Examination and Clinical Testing Options

Professional skin examination by a dermatologist or other qualified medical provider represents the standard approach to skin cancer testing. During a professional examination, a doctor visually inspects your skin using magnification tools and their clinical experience to identify suspicious lesions. This examination typically takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on your skin type, the number of moles or concerning spots, and whether a biopsy is needed.

A dermatologist may use a dermatoscope during examination—a handheld magnifying device that provides enhanced visualization of skin lesions. The dermatoscope reveals patterns and colors not visible to the naked eye, helping doctors differentiate between benign moles and potentially cancerous growths. The examination may include a full-body skin check or be focused on specific areas of concern you've identified.

If a lesion appears suspicious during visual examination, the doctor may recommend a skin biopsy. A biopsy involves removing a sample of the suspicious tissue and sending it to a laboratory for microscopic examination. Several biopsy methods exist: a shave biopsy removes the lesion by shaving it flush with the skin surface; a punch biopsy uses a circular tool to remove a cylinder of skin; an excisional biopsy removes the entire lesion with surrounding margins; and an incisional biopsy removes a portion of a larger lesion. The choice of biopsy method depends on the location, size, and characteristics of the lesion.

Biopsy results typically return within one to two weeks. A pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope and provides a detailed report describing whether cancer is present, what type it is, how deeply it extends into the skin (called depth or Breslow thickness for melanoma), and other characteristics that inform treatment decisions. This microscopic analysis is the definitive way to diagnose skin cancer.

Beyond standard visual examination and biopsy, some dermatology practices offer additional imaging
