Free Guide to Signing Out of Pokémon GO

Understanding Pokémon GO Account Basics

Pokémon GO is a mobile game developed by Niantic that launched in July 2016. The game uses your device's GPS and camera to let you catch virtual Pokémon in real-world locations. To play, you need to create an account and sign in through either a Google account, Apple ID, or a Pokémon Trainer Club account. As of 2024, the game has over 150 million monthly active players worldwide, making it one of the most popular mobile games ever created.

When you first open the game, the app requests permission to track your location, access your camera, and connect to your internet. Your account stores information about your player level, caught Pokémon, items in your inventory, and progress through various in-game challenges. Understanding how your account works is the first step before you decide to sign out.

The sign-out process differs depending on which account type you used to create your Pokémon GO profile. Google accounts, Apple IDs, and Pokémon Trainer Club accounts each have their own sign-out procedures. Additionally, the steps vary slightly between iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) and Android phones. Knowing your account type helps you follow the correct steps for your situation.

Many players sign out for various reasons: they want to switch to a different account, they're taking a break from the game, they're troubleshooting login problems, or they're selling or passing along their device to someone else. Whatever your reason, the process is straightforward once you understand the basic steps.

Takeaway: Before signing out, identify which account type you used (Google, Apple ID, or Pokémon Trainer Club) and whether you're using an iOS or Android device. This information determines which specific steps you'll follow.

How to Sign Out Using a Google Account

If you created your Pokémon GO account using a Google account, the sign-out process involves accessing your device's account settings. Google accounts are the most common method for signing into Pokémon GO, particularly among Android users. This method works on both Android and iOS devices since Google accounts are recognized across platforms.

For Android devices, open the Settings app on your phone or tablet. Navigate to Accounts (this may be labeled "Users & accounts" on some devices). Look for your Google account in the list and tap it. You'll see a menu with several options. Select "Remove account" or "Delete account" depending on your device's wording. A confirmation message will appear asking if you're certain you want to remove the account. Confirm your choice. After this step, Pokémon GO will no longer have access to that Google account on your device.

For iOS devices, the process differs slightly. Open Settings and scroll to find Pokémon GO in the list of installed apps. Tap Pokémon GO, then look for "Sign Out" or "Disconnect" options. Some iOS versions may show these options under a "Linked Accounts" section. Tap the appropriate option to disconnect your Google account from the game. You may be asked to confirm this action.

It's worth noting that removing a Google account from your device will also sign you out of other apps and services that use that account, such as Gmail and Google Play. If you only want to disconnect Pokémon GO specifically without removing the account entirely, look within the Pokémon GO app settings first before accessing your device's system settings. The in-app option is usually the gentler approach that affects only Pokémon GO.

Takeaway: Google account sign-outs work through either device Settings (Android) or the Pokémon GO app menu (iOS). The device-level approach removes the account from your entire phone, while the app-level approach affects only Pokémon GO.

How to Sign Out Using an Apple ID

Apple ID is the primary account system for iOS devices, and many iPhone and iPad users connect Pokémon GO to their Apple IDs. This method is particularly common among players using iPhones. The sign-out process for Apple ID accounts is different from Google accounts and requires accessing either the Pokémon GO app settings or your device's overall account settings.

Within the Pokémon GO app, open the main menu by tapping the Pokéball icon at the bottom center of your screen. Select "Settings" (the gear icon in the upper right corner). Scroll down until you see account-related options. You should see a "Sign Out" button or an option to disconnect your Apple ID. Tap this option, and a confirmation dialog will appear. Confirm that you want to sign out. The app will return you to the login screen, where you can create a new account or sign in with a different Apple ID if you choose.

If you can't find the sign-out option within the app, you can access it through your device settings. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings and navigate to "Sign In & Security" or "Apple ID." This section shows all devices connected to your Apple ID and all apps that have permission to use your Apple ID. Find Pokémon GO in this list and select it. Choose "Stop Using Apple ID" or a similar option. This removes Pokémon GO's ability to access your Apple ID on this device.

A key difference between Apple ID sign-out and Google account removal is that Apple IDs are deeply integrated into iOS itself. Removing an app's access to your Apple ID is safer than removing the entire Apple ID account, which would affect your device's ability to download apps, use iCloud, and access other Apple services. For this reason, the in-app sign-out method is usually the better choice for iOS users.

Takeaway: Apple ID sign-outs are easiest through the Pokémon GO app settings menu. Look for a "Sign Out" option within Settings. Only use the device-level Apple ID settings if you can't find the app-level option.

How to Sign Out Using a Pokémon Trainer Club Account

Pokémon Trainer Club is an official account system created by The Pokémon Company specifically for Pokémon games and related services. These accounts are managed separately from Google and Apple systems. Players using Pokémon Trainer Club accounts can sign out through the Pokémon GO app menu without needing to access device settings.

To sign out from a Pokémon Trainer Club account, open Pokémon GO and tap the Pokéball icon at the bottom of the screen. Select "Settings" (the gear icon in the upper right). In the Settings menu, scroll down to the account section. You should see your Pokémon Trainer Club username displayed. Next to it or below it, look for a "Sign Out" or "Log Out" button. Tap this button. A confirmation message will appear asking if you're certain you want to sign out. Confirm your choice by selecting "Yes" or "OK." You'll be returned to the login screen.

Unlike Google accounts or Apple IDs, Pokémon Trainer Club accounts are managed entirely within Pokémon GO. Signing out from a Pokémon Trainer Club account in Pokémon GO does not affect your account on other devices or your ability to use other Pokémon services on your phone. This makes Pokémon Trainer Club the most isolated account type in terms of sign-out effects.

One important consideration: if you've set up two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Pokémon Trainer Club account for security, you may need to verify your identity during the sign-out process. Some accounts may also ask for your password before allowing a sign-out. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized access. Have your password available if this occurs. Pokémon Trainer Club accounts are particularly common among players who created accounts before Google integration became the standard option.

Takeaway: Pokémon Trainer Club sign-outs happen entirely within the app through Settings. This account type is the most isolated, meaning sign-out affects only Pokémon GO and not your device's other services.

Troubleshooting Common Sign-Out Issues

Sometimes the sign-out process doesn't work as expected. The most common issue is that the "Sign Out" button doesn't appear in the Settings menu, or tapping it doesn't produce any visible change. This often happens due to app glitches or outdated versions. The first step in troubleshooting is to force-close
