Understanding Pillow Basics and Fabric Selection

Before you begin sewing a pillowcase, understanding the fundamentals of pillow construction and fabric choice will set you up for success. A pillowcase is essentially a fabric envelope that covers a pillow insert or batting. The most common pillow size for home use is the standard 20 by 26-inch rectangle, though decorative pillows range from 12 by 12 inches to 18 by 18 inches. Knowing your target pillow size determines how much fabric you'll need to purchase.

Fabric selection matters significantly for both appearance and durability. Cotton is the most popular choice for pillowcases because it breathes well, feels comfortable against skin, and holds up to frequent washing. Cotton blends, which mix cotton with polyester, offer similar benefits with reduced wrinkles. Linen provides a textured, slightly casual appearance and becomes softer with washing. Flannel creates a warm, cozy feel ideal for cooler months. Silk and satin are luxurious options that require more careful handling during washing and sewing.

Thread count, measured in the number of threads per square inch, affects how tightly woven the fabric is. Fabrics with 200 to 400 thread count offer good durability and comfort for everyday pillowcases. Higher thread counts (600 and above) feel softer but may cost more. Weight also matters—lightweight fabrics work for decorative pillows, while heavier-weight fabrics suit standard sleeping pillows.

When selecting fabric at a store or online, examine the weight by holding it up to light. Quality fabric should feel smooth without snags or thin spots. Most fabric stores sell fabric by the yard, and you'll typically need 1.5 to 2 yards for a standard pillowcase, depending on the pillow dimensions and whether you want to include a zipper or envelope closure.

Practical takeaway: Choose 100 percent cotton with a 250 to 400 thread count for a first project. Purchase 2 yards to have enough for cutting, sewing, and potential mistakes. Wash the fabric before cutting if you plan to wash the finished pillowcase frequently, as this prevents future shrinkage.

Gathering Your Tools and Materials

Sewing a pillowcase requires basic supplies that you may already own or can obtain inexpensively. The most essential tools are a sewing needle or sewing machine, scissors or a rotary cutter, measuring tape, pins, and thread. A sewing machine, whether an older mechanical model or a modern computerized one, makes the job faster and creates more consistent seams, though hand sewing is absolutely possible for simpler designs.

For a basic pillowcase project, gather the following materials before starting. You'll need two pieces of fabric cut to size—for a 20 by 26-inch pillow, cut two pieces measuring 21 by 27 inches to account for seam allowance. Thread should match or coordinate with your fabric color. Most projects use all-purpose polyester thread, which works with both natural and synthetic fabrics. Pins hold fabric pieces together during sewing. A measuring tape ensures accurate dimensions, and scissors cut fabric cleanly. A seam ripper, which costs just a few dollars, helps remove stitches if you make errors.

Optional supplies enhance your finished product. Iron-on interfacing adds structure to decorative pillowcases. Bias tape or binding creates finished edges on the opening. A zipper (typically 16 to 20 inches) creates a closure that allows pillow insert removal for washing. Decorative elements like embroidery floss, appliqué patches, or fabric paint personalize your pillowcase.

Most beginners spend between $15 and $40 total on materials for their first pillowcase. High-quality fabric costs more than budget options, but a single yard of premium fabric often costs less than purchasing finished pillowcases at retail stores. Reusing tools across multiple projects makes each subsequent pillowcase less expensive to produce.

Practical takeaway: Start with a basic straight-stitch pillowcase using just fabric, thread, and pins. Once you complete one, you'll understand which additional tools would help with your next project. Keep a supplies checklist to track what you've used and what needs replacing.

Cutting and Preparing Fabric Correctly

Accurate cutting determines whether your pillowcase will fit properly and look professional. Begin by preparing your workspace—a clean, flat surface like a dining table or cutting mat prevents fabric from shifting and ensures straight cuts. Measure your pillow dimensions carefully. For a standard 20 by 26-inch pillow, you need two rectangles measuring 21 by 27 inches each. The extra half-inch on each side accounts for the seam allowance, which is typically 0.5 inches on sewing projects.

Before cutting, check that your fabric isn't twisted and that the grain runs straight. Fabric grain refers to the direction threads run through the weave. Cutting along the grain produces cleaner edges and prevents fraying. To find the grain, look for the lengthwise threads that run parallel to the fabric's selvage (the finished edge). Mark your cutting lines using chalk, a fabric pencil, or pins placed at measured intervals.

When cutting, use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter with a ruler. Dull scissors create jagged edges that fray excessively. Make long, smooth cutting motions rather than short, choppy cuts. If your fabric has a pattern or nap (like corduroy or velvet), cut both pieces in the same direction so the pattern or nap runs the same way on both the front and back. This prevents your finished pillowcase from having pieces that appear different colors or textures.

After cutting both rectangles, trim any loose threads from the edges. Check the dimensions one final time by measuring from corner to corner—the diagonal measurements should be equal if your cuts were square. Store cut pieces flat or loosely rolled to prevent wrinkles before sewing begins. If wrinkles develop, press the fabric with an iron set to the appropriate temperature for your material (check the fabric bolt for recommendations).

Practical takeaway: Measure twice, cut once. Use a ruler and fabric pencil to mark cutting lines clearly before picking up scissors. Test your measuring tape on the pillowcase's target pillow first to confirm the correct finished size.

Sewing Seams and Creating the Pillowcase Shape

Creating the pillowcase shape involves sewing two fabric rectangles together with seams on three sides, leaving one side open for inserting the pillow. Begin by placing your two fabric pieces with the right sides facing each other (the pretty sides touching). The wrong sides now face outward. Pin the pieces together along three edges, spacing pins about 2 inches apart. Pinning prevents shifting during sewing and creates a neater final product.

Set your sewing machine to a basic straight stitch with a stitch length of 2 to 2.5 millimeters. This creates stitches that are tight enough to hold the seam but not so tight that the fabric puckers. Begin sewing along one edge, starting about 0.5 inches from the corner. Most machines have a presser foot that helps you maintain consistent seam width—position the fabric edge under the foot's edge for a standard 0.5-inch seam. Sew slowly and steadily, removing pins as you reach them. Backstitch (sew backward) for about half an inch at the beginning and end of each seam to lock the stitches.

Sew three complete sides, creating corners by stopping with the needle down, raising the presser foot, rotating the fabric 90 degrees, lowering the presser foot, and continuing. Trim the corners diagonally about 0.25 inches from the stitching—this step, called clipping corners, prevents bulky corners when you turn the pillowcase right-side out. Leave one side completely unsewn so you can turn the fabric right-side out and insert the pillow.

Once three sides are sewn, carefully turn the pillowcase inside out through the open side, using your fingers to gently push the corners out completely. Use a pencil or chopstick to reach inside and gently poke out the corners from inside. Press the completed pillowcase with an iron to create crisp edges, especially along the open side. Your basic pillowcase is now ready for the final step
