According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Virginia's population aged 65 and older was approximately 1.2 million in 2020, representing about 14% of the state's total population. In Southeast Virginia's urban and suburban communities, this represents tens of thousands of older adults who may benefit from knowing about available resources.

Senior services in Southeast Virginia fall into several broad categories: health and medical services, housing and residential options, nutrition programs, transportation services, social engagement activities, and financial or legal support services. Some programs operate through local government agencies, while others run through nonprofit organizations, religious institutions, and private providers. Sentara Healthcare operates multiple facilities including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Bon Secours operates Hampton Roads facilities as well. Medicare, the federal program for people aged 65 and older, covers many health services including hospital care, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and preventive services. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, as of 2023, more than 700,000 Virginians received Medicare benefits. Understanding what Medicare covers and how to use it represents important knowledge for most seniors in the region. The program offers different coverage options (Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans) that work differently and cover different providers.

Primary care physicians serve as a starting point for most medical care. Finding a doctor who accepts your insurance, takes new patients, and understands geriatric medicine helps establish consistent care. The Virginia Medical Society and local hospital websites maintain directories of providers. Many health systems have geriatric medicine specialists who focus specifically on age-related conditions and medication management.

Aging in place—continuing to live in one's current home with support services—remains the preference for many seniors. Services supporting aging in place include home care, home modification services, and companion care. Home care agencies in Southeast Virginia provide personal care assistance, help with medications, and other support that allows people to remain at home longer. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in home health care is among the fastest-growing occupational sectors, reflecting increasing demand for these services.

Senior housing communities offer another option. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) provide independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care on one campus, allowing residents to move between levels as needs change. Independent senior living communities offer apartment or cottage-style housing with common amenities like dining facilities, activities programs, and housekeeping. Assisted living facilities provide housing with personal care services for people who need daily support but not skilled nursing care. These facilities range from small private homes serving a few residents to larger communities with hundreds of residents.

The U.S. Census Bureau's American Housing Survey found that most seniors prefer to remain in their current homes. Modifications to existing homes—such as grab bars, ramps, walk-in showers, and accessible bathrooms—help people stay at home safely. Some Southeast Virginia nonprofits and local government agencies offer information about home modification programs and home repair services for seniors with limited incomes.

Subsidized housing programs through HUD and state programs provide housing assistance for seniors with lower incomes.
