Understanding Sarah J. Maas and Her Major Book Series

Sarah J. Maas is an American author born in 1986 who has written over 15 books across multiple interconnected fantasy series. Her works have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into dozens of languages. Maas is known for creating richly detailed fantasy worlds with complex characters, romantic storylines, and high-stakes conflicts. Her books often feature strong protagonists, intricate magic systems, and plots that span multiple volumes.

Maas has published books in five main series: Throne of Glass, Crescent City, A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), Assassin's Blade, and the recently expanding Midgard series through her Crescent City universe. Each series exists in its own world with distinct settings, though some share magical systems or Easter eggs for longtime readers. Understanding which series you want to read and in what order can enhance your reading experience and help you follow complex storylines that build across multiple books.

The reading order matters because each book in a series typically ends with cliffhangers, introduces characters you'll meet again, and develops overarching plots that span several novels. Starting with the wrong book can spoil major plot twists or leave you confused about character motivations and world-building details. Many readers find that following the suggested order helps them better understand the author's intended narrative progression and character development.

Practical takeaway: Before starting any Maas book, identify which series interests you most, then follow that series in order rather than jumping between different series. This approach will give you the full story experience the author intended and help you avoid spoilers and confusion.

The Throne of Glass Series Reading Order

The Throne of Glass series is Maas's first major work and consists of six main books plus companion novellas. The series follows Celaena Sardothien, a skilled assassin who becomes entangled in political intrigue, magic, and destiny. The main books in order are: Throne of Glass (2012), Crown of Midnight (2013), Heir of Fire (2014), Queen of Shadows (2015), Empire of Storms (2016), and Kingdom of Ash (2018).

Before reading the main series, many readers benefit from The Assassin's Blade (2014), which is a collection of five novellas that provide backstory about Celaena's past as an assassin. While not strictly necessary to understand the main plot, these stories add depth to her character and explain relationships that matter later. The novellas can be read either before Throne of Glass or after Crown of Midnight, depending on your preference for backstory versus forward momentum.

The Throne of Glass series spans eight years of story time and watches Celaena transform from a hardened assassin into something far greater. Each book increases the stakes and expands the world-building significantly. By book three, the focus shifts from political intrigue to a much larger magical threat. The series concludes with Kingdom of Ash, which wraps up most major storylines, though some readers note that certain character arcs feel rushed in the final book.

Practical takeaway: Read the main Throne of Glass books in numerical order: start with Throne of Glass, then proceed sequentially through Kingdom of Ash. Read The Assassin's Blade either before Throne of Glass for backstory or after Crown of Midnight if you prefer to start with the main character immediately.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Series and Spin-Offs

A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) is Maas's most popular series to date, with five main books and growing merchandise, fan communities, and potential film adaptations. The series begins with A Court of Thorns and Roses (2015) and follows Feysand Archeron, a young huntress who is taken to the magical faerie realm after killing a creature during a hunt. The main series consists of: A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Ruin (2016), A Court of Wings and Ruin (2017), A Court of Frost and Starlight (2018), and A Court of Silver Flames (2021).

A Court of Frost and Starlight is technically a bridge book rather than a full-length novel. It's shorter than other entries in the series and serves primarily to transition the world and characters between the events of A Court of Wings and Ruin and A Court of Silver Flames. Some readers skip this book, though doing so means missing important relationship developments and world changes that affect understanding of the fifth book.

A Court of Silver Flames marks a significant shift in the series because it centers on a different protagonist (Nesta Archeron, the sister of the original main character) while still involving major characters from the first four books. Reading the first four books in order is essential before starting Silver Flames, as the new book assumes you understand years of previous plot development, character relationships, and world-building.

The ACOTAR series is known for its complex romance elements interwoven with high fantasy plotting. The books grow progressively longer, with A Court of Wings and Ruin exceeding 600 pages in many editions. The series also has more mature content than Throne of Glass, including explicit romantic scenes and darker themes involving trauma and recovery.

Practical takeaway: Read ACOTAR books in this exact order: first four books sequentially, then A Court of Silver Flames. Include the shorter bridge book (A Court of Frost and Starlight) even though it's brief, as it contains important transitions that affect your understanding of later events.

The Crescent City Series and Connected Works

Crescent City is Maas's most recent series and represents a departure from pure fantasy into urban fantasy set in a futuristic world. The series currently has two published books: Crescent City (2020) and Crescent City: House of Many Waters (2024). This series takes place in a world called Midgard, where humans, shifters, vampires, fae, and other magical beings coexist in a modern city setting. The protagonist is Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae, half-human woman searching for her friend's killer.

What makes Crescent City unique in Maas's bibliography is that it shares a universe with ACOTAR, though this connection is not obvious until later in the first Crescent City book. Experienced Maas readers will notice Easter eggs and references to the fae world and its magic systems. However, you can read Crescent City without having read ACOTAR first and still enjoy it as a standalone story. Many new readers start with Crescent City because its urban fantasy setting feels more accessible than the high fantasy of other Maas series.

Crescent City books are notably darker and more violent than Throne of Glass or ACOTAR, with graphic content involving murder, assault, and supernatural warfare. The first book is approximately 688 pages and introduces a large cast of characters alongside the main plot. The second book, House of Many Waters, continues Bryce's story and further develops the connections between the Crescent City world and the larger Maas universe.

Readers interested in the cosmic mythology connecting multiple Maas universes should eventually read both Crescent City books alongside ACOTAR, as theories about shared worlds and connected storylines have become central to fan discussions. However, this is not required for enjoying either series on its own.

Practical takeaway: Read Crescent City books in order if you choose to start with this series. You can read it independently without prior Maas experience, though reading ACOTAR first may enhance your understanding of certain magical systems and Easter eggs.

Novellas, Short Stories, and Companion Content

Beyond the main series, Maas has written numerous novellas and short stories that provide additional content for fans. The most significant of these is The Assassin's Blade, mentioned previously, which consists of five interconnected novellas about Celaena's past. Other notable shorter works include "The Shadows of the Lost Sun," a short story that appeared in an anthology, and various holiday-themed short stories published online or in special editions.
